Re: NCAA Denies UConn Waiver Request

I'm glad the NCAA wasn't hearing that nonsense UConn was spitting. The Huskies were trying to pull a 'Joe Paterno', calling their own shots hoping that'll suffice. They have a low APR, so they're banned from the post-season. That's only fair. Who cares that they're willing to go to the tourney but give-up their conference share of any revenue? Who cares if they trim next year's schedule by scratching a few 'exhibition' games?

It's about time the NCAA made some more 'examples' outta these schools.

:tup::tup:

They should've thrown the 'book' at Ohio State, Miami and USC (and a coupla others).

That crap at Ohio State was light weight compared to the rest. Kids sold their own isht. If Tressel had not hid it. It would've have not been bad at all. Plus Ohio State is graduating their kids. Uconn is pulling a Nolan Richardson and Bob Huggins. Not concerned with academics.

Re: NCAA Denies UConn Waiver Request

I guess now those Louisiana Southern people will go sit they tails down now...so much for their wavier theory!

NCAA turns down Southern waiver
ADVOCATE STAFF REPORT
February 11, 2012
0 COMMENTS
The Southern men’s basketball team has won five straight games and stands alone in second place in the Southwestern Athletic Conference standings.

Still, no matter how well the Jaguars do, their season will end March 3. They cannot make the postseason.

Southern received notification Friday that a waiver request submitted to allow the men’s basketball team to play in the 2012 postseason will not be heard by the NCAA.

“On behalf of the Southern men’s basketball program, I would like to express our disappointment in our waiver request failing to warrant consideration in the view of the NCAA,â€￾ interim athletic director Sandy Pugh said in a statement.

“However, we continue to make every effort to ensure that the academic progress our men’s basketball program has made will continue and will encourage all athletic programs to strive to excel academically and athletically.â€￾

Re: NCAA turns down Southern's waiver

Coach Banks is doing a excellent job on and off the court

Southern’s score for the 2010-11 school year is projected to be about 954, according to the university. It is a drastic rise from the 2009-10 score of 780, but it still gives Southern a two-year score of 867, well below the necessary 930 mark. (Southern’s four-year score is not known exactly, but is well below the necessary 900 benchmark.)

Southern’s waiver request also noted that the men’s basketball program achieved perfect APR eligibility and retention scores for the fall 2011 semester.

Re: NCAA turns down Southern's waiver

I'm glad you posted it because there are some who are probably reading theadvocate now. :smh: But if we don't get the right score for the 2 year or 4 year period, will they ban us again

Re: NCAA turns down Southern's waiver

Sincerely SU just keep recruiting the right students and it will work itself out...keep up the good work Stump & Banks!

Re: NCAA turns down Southern's waiver

I didn't know you guys were really going to seek a waiver. I thought it was a joke, wishful thinking, just talk on the board. Wow. I really didn't think a season record had anything to do with current APR restrictions. Wow.

Re: NCAA turns down Southern's waiver

I think the conference (over all) is going to do better in the APR area. I think we have finally realized that APR is not a joke and the NCAA is serious. I also think we (the SWAC) have finally figured it out. It may take a couple of seasons to right the ships but for the most part we are understanding the game now.

Schools apply for waivers all the time.

Do you think Black parents will ever get it is it relates to high school athletes and their academics?

Re: NCAA turns down Southern's waiver

So you're putting all Black parents in the same fishbowl?

I am asserting Black kids are underperforming in the classroom, especially athletes. Ask any HBCU that has raised their academic requirements for entrance or any coach out recruiting under APR and those increased academic requirements.

Re: NCAA turns down Southern's waiver

It is not ALL Black parents. I know personally Black parents whose children would not have been allowed to play if their grades were not up to par. But to answer your question I think it will filter down. When colleges are no longer able to (or willing to) accept under achievers in the classroom just to fill their rosters those who see their children as meal tickets will be forced to get the message.

Inter-collegiate athletics began as a diversion or extra curricular activity for the COLLEGE STUDENT. Somewhere down the line it morphed into what we see today.

Re: NCAA turns down Southern's waiver

All Black kids/athletes are not under performing in the classroom. If they are, they get away with what they are allowed to get away with. Some parents don't know any better. Those who do, do better. Some parents are under the impression that all little Johnny has to do is run fast, jump high or shoot well to get a scholarship. Those days are over.

I didnt use the term all, but in general they are.

Late on this one Frat. Jagtillidie started a thread several days ago about this story.
