Oh, and About McDonald's...

The guy who started McDonald's was not in the restaurant business...he was in real estate! If you think about it McD's burgers aren't that great....they are ok...not overwhelmingly great.

He recognized that convenience of location and swiftness of service was $$$$. He was right.

JSU/99: Yes, if goods are raised along with the wages...However, the federal government isn't thinking about anyone in particular. They are trying to be sure they keep the cycle going. The cycle makes the economy move. Think about when 9/11 happened...that fear could have potentially paralyzed America. People would have stopped buying and started saving...but notice what Bush did....He told people they were getting an INCOME TAX BREAK when most of America received that little $300 check...It was to spur spending. What people didn't know about that check was...he was giving most people back money they will have gotten back in taxes the following year anyway...OR if they had to pay...it only increased what they owed the following year. Bush told America to go on with life and not be afraid...keep living like America does. Why? He's got to keep the economy lively...No spending ....no loans....etc...can cause some trouble.
Unless I'm mistaken, those $300 checks came before 9/11 as a part of the tax cut enacted during his first year. Since the tax season was over, they gave us those $300 rebates based on taxes filed that year as a way to pump some money back into the economy, all while creating a bigger deficit for the future. If you think that's sound economic policy, so be it. But it had nothing to do with 9/11. 9/11 paralyzed the economy(particularly the service and airline industry) only for a time, however things settled down and with help these industries bounced back.

However, having said all of this I still can't understand the opposition to a moderate minimum wage increase. With interest rates being raised and inflation on the rise, minimum salaries have to increase in order to keep up. This cycle you keep talking about won't work unless

Ok, but what does this have to do with increasing the minimum wage? And the McDonald brothers were in the resturant business.

I think some of you may be forgetting that the minimum wage has not been increased since 1996, almost a decade ago.

How many of you think the cost of goods and services has remained unchanged since 1996?

JSU/99: You are probably right but we got that lil' check two years in a row. But when we filed taxes that first year, there was a question that asked if we received that money...based upon you clicking yes or no (if you filed electronically), it altered your refund.

The McDonald's thing was a "tangent"...based on something I read from SPERM in the early pages of this document. It was not an argument....just a side note.

Minimum wages should have been increased years ago because people cannot live off of $5.15 an hour. I think the minimum wages should be at least $10.00 an hour. If I had my own business I would not expect anyone to work for me for less than $10.00 an hour and that would be starting at the bottom level like custodian services. I wouldn't contract that particular services out because the person that owns the services wouldn't pay his or her employees what I would because they want all the money for themselves. I have seen it happen too much.

Not true, McDonalds was created and is still in the business of REAL ESTATE. Majority of the McDonalds sit on the corner of PRIME REAL ESTATE blocks in the town/city. Don't believe me, try to buy any property near a McDonalds.

McDonald's was created as a resturant by 2 brothers and bought out by Ray Croc in the 60's. Neither the brothers or Croc were in the real estate business. Croc was a salesman.

JSU99: What business is Donald Trump in?

Walgreens likes real estate as well. Sure they are the neighborhood pharmacy, but prime real estate and location are what make them successful. They like to be known as the neighborhood drugstore...prefereably on a corner so people can drive in and out. Of course some are not in such a location, but believe me, where ever they are, it is prime real estate.

I know a Walgreens near my house on Fuqua...They closed it down and built another one NOT one mile from the old location. The new location is a corner.

Same with Jack In the Box...one mysteriously burned down on a corner near the old Walgreens...They re-built it near the Beltway...NOT 2 miles from the old location. The old location was torn down and is now a Dominoes Pizza.

It is all about LOCATION, LOCATION, LOCATION ...which is Real Estate...

J4J, I don't know any business that doesn't like a good location. Heck when i buy a home I'll be looking for a good location. But that doesn't mean my business is real estate. Its the same thing with McDonalds. They sell fast food. That's their sole reason for existance.

There's a difference between "liking" good rea estate and being in the real estate business.

This is true...Walgreens likes real estate.

The owner(s) of McDonald's were quoted in a book as saying..." I am in the real estate business and not the restaurant business..." I read it and I have heard some other business saavy folks say they have read it. If I can find a source, I'll quote it. Until then, I know my memory serves me correctly.

The question is should minimum wage be increase to keep pace with inflation? I say yes. It's no different than COLAs (Cost of living allowances) or getting a pay raises or step increases on your job. Most of us thought this was decided back in 1935 with FDR's New Deal. But, apparently most of us were wrong and these battles have to be continually fought. :redhot:
