No, if I am making minimum wage, I wouldn't dare try to create and raise a family on that income. One of the main complains about the minimum wage is that it is not enough to support a family. If a person is making minimum wage and they have a family, then they shouldn't complain about not making enough money.

Alert, Alert, Alert.....

Right Wing Logic - If you are on minimum don't dare have a family.

KB News Alert for you... - Only GOD decides who should have a family or not. Are would you like for them to go to an Abortion Clinic like most republicans?????

Are are you just like the president and feel like one should just be retranined to do something else, without providing any clue to what that something else is you should be retrained to do. You probably one of those that also believe that the only moral issues in American is gay marriage and abortion.

I just can't believe this is how America thinks. *shame*

What I'm trying to figure out though is what do the opponents of raising the minimum wage think will eventually happen to those people that can't afford to live. Will they all just disappear? Who will work their jobs then?

Politics 101 - Republicans are anti-abortion....Democrats are pro-choice. If anyone steers you towards an abortion clinic they are not Republicans.

And it's not right wing logic...it's common sense. If I don't have a job or make enough money to support a family, why should I have one?

If I can't afford to feed the kids that I have, why should I go out and have more. That abosolutly makes no freaking sense whatsoever.

And you dems wonder why you have been getting your azzes handed to you at the polls lately.

Its not about being right wing or left wing. $5.15 a hour is not enough to raise a family and I wouldn't purposely try to have a family on that income. Now I am aware that things happen unexpectly. I am particularly focusing on people who start families on purpose even though they make minimum wage.

My Mom and Dad reared 8 children first as share cropper, later on minimun wages. They sent all 8 to college.

^^ Your peeps were much like a lot of peeps in my family. Living off the land allows you to provide for your family. Peeps in the inner city can't do that because they don't have the same logistics at their disposal.

Again, I will never advocate people having a family if they can't adequately provide for it.

And your parents were made out of considerably more "intestinal fortitude" than most of the hand in mouth generation that has been created by todays society JC.

I totally agree. My grandfather raised 11 children w/NO INCOME - strictly on the land. They were the poorest of the poor. They literally had NOTHING! Ten went to college & all are/were industrious and multi-talented & strangely enough like(d) to work for themselves.

Fort, you sure we aint related? lol

But my grandparents went through pretty much the same circumstances. They had to have all those kids to plow fields and do the labor that running a farm encumbered.

There was no such thing as welfare....they either worked or starved.

Again, the Reps. and Dems. both offer plans to raise the minimum wage. But I tell people that there will be a tradeoff for that.

No more .99 cent hamburgers.

Basically $1/hr equates to $2000/year. So a person making $5.15/hr roughly earns about $10,000/year. A mother/father can raise a kid, maybe 2 with a combined salary of $20,000/year.

Your lifestyle won't be that of others, but it sure won't be awful. Computer Programmers in India are making about $10/hr at best. Our services and goods are no longer local, they are global. There is simply no way that wages can go up in a global economy. If wages go up here, then that means we will have to depend on more import goods for our companies to compete. The more import goods, the less number of jobs.

Americans have to change their lifestyles and adapt. $5.15/hr is not much in America, but compared to other countries, its pretty good.

You want to talk about trade-offs, well the price for most goods are already going up. Gas, Milk, Coffee, energy costs. Like someone said earlier, as long as the price of goods and services continue to rise, so should minimum wage. If we were to follow Makaho's logic, there shouldn't be a minimun wage. Just let workers bargain for themselves.

JSU have you ever owned your own business. Your comments revolve around the fact that you havent.

Let's just say I own Stamp's Super burgers. I have 6 employees that I pay a minimum wage of 5.15 cents too. If that minimum wage get's raised to say 8.15 cents then I will no longer be able to afford to pay those 6 employees that wage. I will have to fire at least two of them and raise my prices to do so.

The problem that people like yourself fail to see is that this kills small businesses (the majority of businesses in this country are small btw). McDonalds will simply raise their prices to accomodate...mom and pop can't.

You speak like someone that has never had to make "payroll" for your employees.

Mabye if you did, you would think differently.

That's easy for you (or me) to say being that we don't HAVE to live off something like that. I made more in unemployment than that.

Mak....

Stamps could raise their prices and I'd STILL go there...better than paying $7 for a 1/2 pound burger ONLY at Fuddruckers.

Like most Americans, I approach this issue from an employee/consumer standpoint. Most of us haven't had the oppurtunity to make "payroll" for employees because we are the employees. But that doesn't mean we shouldn't be in this debate. As a consumer, I see the prices of most goods rising sharply every quarter. Whenever that happens there has to be some adjustment in the average wages to counter that. 2 dollars might be too much, but Common sense tells you that a modest increase over the next 2 years - 2 1/2 years will not kill small business. This isn't the first time we've increased the minimum wage. Unless If your business can't absorb a modest wage increase enacted over a period of time, then chances are you're going out of business soon anyway.

^^Again, your commentary revolves around not being in a capacity to have ever had to make ends meet and payroll, which is why your commentary has been what it has been thus far.

I have been on both sides of the fence, which is why I can comment in both regards. And how can you know what kills small business since you have never owned one. Most small businesses fail or succeed in their first two years of operation....it's the nature of the beast.

No one goes into business to supply jobs just to operate in the red....that's self destructive behavior. You working for a business is a byproduct of them trying to make a profit....period. You don't work where you work for no pay do you?

It's the same difference. If you ever owned your own business, you'd see that.

^^^^ It seems that a lot of people formulate opinions as if they were running a business and they aren't the consumer. They'll argue against the consumer(themselves) like theres no tomorrow.

I think Mak hit the nail on the head though. A business is in business to make money and not jobs. Jobs are a by product. If the company can get it done with less workers they'll do it. So why do we turn around and believe that if we do whats best for business that it will create jobs rather than increase profit.

It doesn't take a business owner to know this. If firsthand experience is the criteria for knowledge then none of us would know anything.

Correct, which means an already thriving business won't go under just because of a modest minimum wage increase. They should be able to absorb this cost increase the same way they absorb any increase in cost. This just factors into the cost of doing business. Surely a good businessman would expect expect the minimum wage to increase over time the same way he expects the costs of goods to increase over time.

Nice lesson on profitability, but this has no relevance to our discussion.

Growing up in the 80's, we lived off those type of wages. Its easy for me to say because I've experienced it and survived and know people who still make minium wage and yet survive.

Which is why women are better experts to talk about the rigors of childbirth as opposed to men. Until a man passes something the size of a cantelope through an orafice, women are better suited in that regard, and are better gauges on that particular subject. You may well have an opinion....it's just an "uneducated" one.

Again, if you have never been one that has had to absorb the cost of business how can you even provide and adequate arguement to someone that has had to absorb said cost. I will put this in terms that you can understand. If I raise your rent, (which was a set cost that you budget for on a regular basis) then you will have to adjust your spending habits to accomodate for me raising your rent. You will more than likely have to adjust what you buy/spend/or consume on a daily basis to live the same way. The same is for business.....especially small business. A broad adjustment in the minimum wage for them will kill their overhead.....again, start your own business and you will see this first hand. BTW, you do know that whenever the minimum wage is raised all other salaries within the infrastructure will have to be raised in proportion. Again, Business 101 teaches that....BTW, were you a liberal arts major?

Nice lesson on profitability, but this has no relevance to our discussion.
What you fail to see is relevant is of no consequence to me, especially since you don't want to even acknowledge every single basic template that every school of business at every single university teaches. Mabye your arguement might change if you had actually "been there" and "done that". Based on your logic, men are far better advocates as to the pain of childbirth since they have written more books that women in that regard. If I was a woman about to consider birthing a child, I would never ask a man or even a woman that has never had one....instead, I would ask a mother.

Adieu,

Let's take Wal-Mart as an example. Lets say wages go from $5.15 to $6.16 per hour. Well, Wal-Mart will still sell the same amount of goods, so laying people off is not an option. Wal-Mart will still offer low prices, so raising prices is not an option. Wal-Mart has to find a way to offset the increase in worker pay, and not increase prices. What will they do?

Well, instead of Wal-Mart raising the price on an item like a TV, they will simply switch from buying TVs from Sanyo (American company located in Tenn) to buying from Toshiba (Japaneese company located in Japan). You see, Toshiba can sell Wal-Mart a 27-inch from $100, but Sanyo's price is $110. Sanyo can't go down on its price because they too have to pay the wage increase. Sanyo loses the contract, Wal-Mart pays its workers the increase, keep prices the same and its customer happy. Who loses? Sanyo.

Globalized Economy. This is not the 90's when times were good.

^^Sperm, you are interjecting way too much common sense and logic.

According to previous posters, boosting the minimum wage has no effect on the bottom line!

Bruh, you are making too much sense!

Makaho,
According to what you're saying, first hand experience is the only way to gain knowledge of anything.
That's VERY far from the truth.

If that was the case, then none of us would have knowledge or opinions of slavery, NFL football, US Presidency, etc......
