I really wish schools wouldn't do this. Either give the job to the interim or hire someone else.

This half-a-toe-in-the-pool stuff provides no stability to the staff, the players or recruits.
 



North Carolina Central (FCS): Defensive coordinator / assistant head coach / safeties coach Granville Eastman will lead the team in 2018 as the interim head coach. He replaces Jerry Mack, who left to become the offensive coordinator at Rice.

A year long interim?? SMH

Yea that makes no sense but I guess they want him to earn a contract. Still .. makes no sense. Hopefully, they can keep the staff together tho. I hope they give him the money to hire a DC.

Actually it does make sense. Most Head Coaches aren't the ones the recruits build relationships with on the recruiting trail. It's the assistants and the position coaches that they get a bond with. Since Mack left on his own and by himself. You want to keep a winning staff together which means keeping your recruits. If you hire a new coach, they will bring their own staff. The interim title protects NCCU in case this staff can't function without Jerry Mack. Then they can let them go in good faith having allowed them to try to run the show. Plus you salvage recruiting season by keeping them around.

I expect NCCU also knows that our Coach and their alum has one year left on his contract. If this staff fails, I would imagine they will be making calls to Big Worm at this time next year without having to buy him out of SU. Unless he signs another extension this offseason.

Makes perfect sense. You keep your staff in tack who has been doing your recruiting. Not only that, it keeps the present players happy. You let this guy earn a contract and you didn't throw all them guys on the street just because Mack left. You would have had you hired a new guy. This way you can see if it was Mack who was the driving force behind NCCU or was it the assistants that really did their job.

Ohio State did the same thing with Luke Fickell after having to fire Tressel at the last minute.

My point is that they made the right hire but the man shouldnt be an interim. He has earned the right to be the HC. The best thing for them to do was to try to keep that staff in tact and hire a new DC.

Go ask 5 assistant coaches what they would do if they were basically told they only have a job guaranteed for one year.
I guarantee you all 5 would say they would go looking for work elsewhere.
These guys have families to take care of. Nobody is sticking around with that kind of job security unless they absolutely have to.

Go tell them they are all gone since their head guy left them hanging. By the way, assistants as someone said has year to year deals.
