They tend to attract a better class of athlete with less discipline problems generally speaking. If you compare the football players at UC Berkeley (#1 public university in the country) and compare them to the ones at say LSU ... you'll notice a big difference in how they carry themselves and ambition level outside just football. It matters.

and if you are a football coach, I would assume you want to coach at a football school. One with fans who care.

PV has a decent fan base (just not stronger than FAMU) and is enjoying a renewed interest in their football program thanks to their new stadium and facilities.

And keep in mind FAMU is the only major public HBCU in the whole state so most of the state is behind the school. Texas has two major public HBCUs so the state is roughly divided between the two in support and interest.

Prairie View isn’t remotely interested in building a powerhouse-type football team akin to what sam houston state has built. Those people @ PV only seek to field a semi-competitive team that can compete decently IC & then show a bloodbath @ HC’ing against inferior teams from naia or d2 for their “fan base.”

Yeah, but don't forget about a factor that many don't think about, "attractive jobs at programs with winning names". FAMU still has die hards, and they are still FAMU. The job is more attractive than PV in the NCAA world. Some folks are forgetting about that. It's just the way it is. Folks don't believe this, but the AAMU gig is the most attractive thing available in the SWAC right now. Yes, PV is in Texas and that great, but AAMU has a contender name for conference titles and is in a state where kids want to be known as champions.

And AAMU staffers actually go out and recruit those kids head to head vs the "others."
 
What makes PV’s location better than FAMU’s? Both states have talent. Both have no state taxes. I don’t get that statement at all.
