Building a better Bruce Eugene

Yes, in this case, lying about or overexaggerating a man's weight is negative.

YES IT IS NEGATIVE. FIRST HAVE YOU EVER SEEN BRUCE IN PERSON WITHOUT PADS, 6'0 280 IS A NOSE GUARD, HE IS BIG BUT NOT THAT BIG AND I THINK HE'S TALLER THAN 6'0. POINT IS HE IS THE BEST PLAYER IN THE SWAC RIGHT NOW AND IF YOU DON'T HAVE ANYTHING GOOD TO SAY, DON'T SAY ANYTHING! I PERSONALLY AM PROUD TO SEE ANYONE FROM THE SWAC GO.

Grambling Football has had a couple of "will never's" to overcome. They said that a black QB will never start in the NFL, James Harris silenced that. Theyu said that a black QB would never win a Superbowl, Doug Williams proved that not to be true. Now some black oppressors, because whites don't have to do it anymore, are saying that a talented 6 footer from the same school will never make it. History will prove itself again........... Bruce, if you should see this thread, this should make you work even harder. Good Luck BRUCE!!!!!

Come on 75, please tell me that you did not take it here and try to make this into a racial issue, or should I say "a black man trying to hold each other down" issue. It is neither. You can't compare what was said about Shack to Bruce, and what was said about Doug to Bruce either, because you are talking about situations that are both over 25 years old. Plus with Doug, part of what helped him was his size and his arm strength. The black QB issue is almost a dead one these days. There are good black QB's starting, but the true measure of the progress in this area is the number of black QB's who are back ups and journey men. Because that shows you that some (not all) of the pressure of being a black QB and having to be great, has been lifted. Until Rush tried to make it an issue again this season, most were strictly praised or criticzed based solely on their talent level!

But the fact that some are stating that Bruce doesn't fit the mold of what the NFL looks for in QB's is just fact. It is not a knock on Eugene as a player or as a person. It is not a knock against JSU, it is merely a discussion of his size. And frankly it doesn't mean that he won't make the NFL and succeed tremendously(which I hope he does). Because even if he does he will still be the exception and not the rule of what the NFL looks for in terms of QB's in the relation to their size. And that is all that anybody is saying here. he doesn't fit the mold, but I don't see where anybody says that he doesn't deserve a chance, or that he "never" will be a success in the NFL. At least I didn't. But even comparing Bruce to Shack and Doug, they all have to overcome some hurdles in their careers. Shack the stigma of being a black QB, Doug of being a black QB and being from a small school. Bruce's current obstacle just appears to be his height and weight. One he can control, one he can't. But atleast the progess in football is evident because one hurdle he doesn't have as prevelant as the others did, is overcoming his skin color. At least not to the degree that the previous two did.

But like you, maybe Bruce is reading these post and maybe it does inspire him top work even harder than he apparently already is working. It can only help him and his career.....

IT is not about race with gman 75 he is just saying what we do as people sometime. We don't what th enfl is looking for nowadays. WE CAN ONLY SPECULATE !!!Based on numbers alone eugene should go to someones team. I watched this kid from a freshmen come out of nowhere to take the swac hostage not by throwing up duck hoping soemone catches them but sure passes.I agree he needs somes work but that is where our super bowl qb comes in at. He cannot do this on his own.He needs to be under center more this year also to ready him for the nfl system. There shoudl be mroe advanced play callign by HIM!!!!!H e is a senior so he shoudl knwo the playbook. His mechanics are weak but look hwo is the qb caoch PETE burks need i say more.he needs someone who knows what they are talking about and will hold him accountable for bad mechanics in practice. make him do 10 pushups everytime he slings a pass or throws flat footed w/o stepping into his throws anything that will motivate him to do the right thing to further his career.I think his biggest problem is his weight. Theleague if willing can help with mechanics and other things but he has to get his weight donw or get in culpepper shape physically. This schedule heh has shoudl make his numbers balloon .I think he ahs a bright future ahead in nfl or cfl to start off with .

Interesting that you would say something like this. I agree and I think this may substantiate what some of us are trying to say here. While the black QB issue is almost dead, the issue of "short" QBs not being in the NFL is slowly but surely going away. I went over a few team rosters just in the AFC and found nine QBs that are 6'1" or shorter. Four of them are 6'1", four of them are 6'0" and one being Doug Flutie is 5'10". An important point to make here is that a few of these guys are backups to guys that are 6'1" or 6'0" (Flutie to Brees and vice versa AND David Garrard to Mark Brunell.) And while I know this is dealing strictly with height, if Bruce Eugene gets his weight down by sticking to his training regiment, physically he will be in the same "boat" as these guys.

An interesting point to make since his name has been mentioned is about David Garrard in Jacksonville. I used to watch this guy when he played at East Carolina. Very athletic with a strong zip on the ball. He was quite a playmaker and the team was pretty tough early on in his career. During his first 2 years, ECU was very successful but in his last two years things fell off for the team. Interestingly enough, Garrard at one time during his senior season was 6'1" 250 lbs and at another time 6'1" 260 before the draft.

I read a tid bit on him a while back when I was looking at an article on Byron Leftwich. The article included some information about him and his playing days at ECU. The article touched on some problems (weight, bad technique, lack of mobility) he had before being drafted by the Jaguars and how he even wondered if he would make it in the NFL. Well, he ended up being drafted in the middle rounds of the draft that year. Now, im not using Garrard as a comparison in terms of talent but im thinking if Garrard could be drafted with all of that weight and a knock for not being able to move around and bad technique then Bruce, at the very least, will get a free agent shot if he sticks to his training regiment.

Oh and by the way, these are the nine guys that I found to be 6'1" or shorter:

**** 6'1 ****

David Garrard (238 lbs)
Mark Brunell (221 lbs)
Alex Van Pelt (218 lbs)
Anthony Wright (207 lbs)

**** 6'0" ****

Jarrious Jackson (228 lbs)
M Tuiasosopo (220 lbs)
Drew Brees (221 lbs)
Brooks Bollinger (203 lbs)

and Flutie as 5'10" 180 lbs

GramFan you are the man!! You have brought out some very great points. Also to add to the list of short QBs, Ty Detmer stand 6'0 and 189lbs played pretty well for philly in 96 & 97. Ty also is in a reserve roll.

No doubt. Youre right. I dont think his brother Koy, who is currently a backup in Philly, is any taller than 6'0" or 6'1". But like I said, I only checked rosters of some AFC teams which ofcourse, Philly is not a part of. I will check the NFC rosters tomorrow if i get a chance.

I couldnt help myself. I had to check the NFC rosters out even though I should be in bed sleeping. Here is what I found, including your boy Ty Detmer who is indeed in a reserve roll in Detroit.

**** 6'1" ****

Koy Detmer (195 lbs)
Tim Hasselbach (210 lbs) This is the Hasselback in Wash.
Rex Grossman (217 lbs)
Kordell Stewart (217 lbs)
Jeff Garcia (195 lbs)

**** 6'0" ****
Ty Detmer (190 lbs) Looks like he added a pound. lol
Mike Vick (215 lbs)
Rodney Peete (230 lbs)
Shaun King (225 lbs)
Jeff Blake (223 lbs)
Tim Rattay (205)

and like the AFC there is one shorter than 6 feet:

Seneca Wallace is 5'11" 195 lbs

Again, I would like to point out that there are a couple starter/backup combos that are each 6'1" or shorter. Jeff Garcia and his backup Tim Rattay and Kordell Stewart and Rex Grossman.

From what I gathered, and I may have missed some, there are 21 QBs in the NFL that are 6'1" or shorter. Of the 21 I found, 13 of them started games this year. If that doesnt prove that the "short" tag is getting to be less important than ever then I dont know what would.

Seems like it all depends on Bruce Eugene. We know from the comments that the scouts know about him. In fact, I'd wager to say that he's the most discussed athlete in 1AA. I've seen and contributed to posts concerning him on various 1AA boards for the past two seasons. Plus with Grambling's visibility (enhanced by the nationally televised Bayou Classic) and Doug's connection, Bruce has gotten exposure. With that exposure he has shown his considerable talents. Now it will be important that he shows his discipline and focus.

Usually when you discuss an athlete this talented and acclaimed, you hear about character issues or ego problems. Fortunately, and to his credit, that's not the case with Bruce. I guess that's what makes me root for the young brother. I have full confidence that he will discipline himself and represent himself, Grambling and the conference well next year.

I agree with you Mike, I meet Bruce a little of a year ago. Bruce is very soft spoken and humble guy. No doubt the spotlight will be bright on Bruce this up comming season but like you said, it is all in Bruces hands. I would like to see Bruce develope a little more under center (3 step & 5 step drop) so he can become a well rounded QB. Bruce has a little brother that looks JUST LIKE him and Bruce and hit little brother look JUST LIKE their mother.

You prove points very well! The "short" tag is looking less important.:)
