Bobby Knight?

Heck I remember seeing a certain current band director in the SWAC do some things while I was in HS that would not be deemed appropriate these days.

Judging by some of these post, you would not want Doc Miller (former UAPB & GSU) band director, as you band director. Doc would literally throw a piccolo case at your dayum head.

My high school basketball coach was white and the whole team was black and he made us man up plenty of times. He never his one of us to do it though.

I'm quite certain there was a knucklehead or two in the group who deserved to get whooped upside the head Curt. Always is. lol

My basketball coach was a descendant, if you will, of Bob Knight. Coached over 700 victories between New Jersey and Texas high school ball. He's... "different." Always was. Had a HUGE impact on guys like myself. Trip thing is his grass-roots philosophies are (were) very simple. Effort. Knowledge. Discipline. Respect. Hard work, etc... He demanded RESPECT first and foremost. When he talked, there was NO ONE else talking and ALL eyes were fixated on him! Even the bench guys. That's all he ever asked. If you didn't comply, you were let go whenever and whereever! Saw it happen quite a few times.

It's a contract between players and coach. If the player breaches then :smash: on that azz.

ummm Panthro,
Iit's a whole lotta folks out there who don't condone Knight's antics.

MH, send'em to the SWAC page so I can give them an earful too! lol

Right now, I'm in disbelief that SWAC folx have a problem w/ what this man did. Especially after witnessing the bush-league play that our teams are involved in. :retard:

Remedial is too light of a word to describe MOST of our sports teams. Look @ how competitive we are in ANYTHING outside of the SWAC/MEAC/SIAC. Oh! Besides stepping and showband stuff. There you'll find your answer.

Weak.

ok, here's a couple

btw, please don't tell me that you're suggesting the key to making our bball teams better is to have coaches to slap the players around

Brownie Points - Is it finally time to say good Knight?

When you view it as a separate incident, the latest edition of Bobby Knight?s Greatest Hits ? a little chin music for Texas Tech?s Michael Prince ? isn?t a big deal.

When you add it to Knight?s body of work, it?s not as bad as choking Neil Reed at Indiana, or as bad as head-butting another Hoosier on the bench. But is it as bad as kicking his son or grabbing students who called him by his last name? Hurling chairs or breaking press row phones? Chewing out tournament directors?

Whenever Knight erupts, we have to slot the incident among his other transgressions. It?s Knight, once again, being allowed to be Knight. When others continue to enable him, that is where the trouble lies.

Soon, Knight will pass Dean Smith and become the winningest coach in college basketball history. The question is: Will Knight do something that surpasses all his other shocking incidents, something that makes us wish we had stopped him sooner?

Knight needs his butt kicked
Who can honestly say Bobby Knight did nothing wrong?

He just flipped the kid's chin up? Yeah sure. Anyone who believes this should go right over to your spouse or significant other right now and flip his or her chin up just like Knight did ... You also better be prepared to duck, 'cause you're going to get slugged.

Bottom line: Knight is a thug, a bully, a punk and a disgrace to sport. He needs his butt kicked until his nose bleeds.

I don't care if the kid and his parents are OK with this. Texas Tech should not be OK with this.

This is supposed to be an institution dedicated to learning, and what is it teaching? That this is acceptable behavior?

Do not mistake Knight's actions as passion. They are nothing more than the tantrums of an immature schoolyard bully.

And the people in charge at Tech should be ashamed for selling out, for condoning this behavior for the sake of winning a few ballgames. Where it really matters, Bobby Knight is a loser, and so is Tech.

This is a slap in the face to all true sportsmen and sportswomen.

another one for you Panthro, so you won't think it's just a few folks on tspn

Knight must be stopped

The Atlanta Journal-Constitution

We all know that Taye Diggs? new show ?Day Break? starts tomorrow ? and don?t tell me you haven?t seen the commercial about the guy who wakes up and relives the same terrible day over and over again because it comes on 24 times a day. But tell me if you didn?t feel like his character this morning when you saw that Bobby Knight had yet another incident where he?s putting his hands on a player?

Seriously, how many times does this have to happen for someone to say enough is enough. Anybody wanting to argue that it was ?no big deal? or ?just a tap.? I?m more inclined to side with those who believe it was yet another inappropriate move by a guy who?s destroyed a Hall of Fame legacy with a series of those moves.

In an era where there?s outrage (and rightfully so) when Little League parents snap and fight with coaches and game officials, and often each other, how could anyone dismiss Knight?s lick as no biggie? I heard a who?s who of talking heads explain it away on the radio this morning. And that?s junk.

But I wonder if they?d have the same reaction if that kid Knight smacked had lifted his head, reared back and flattened Knight with a right cross? What happens when Knight puts his hands on somebody that hits back? Is the kid a bigger villain than a coach?

There?s a level of civility that should be involved in the process that seems to be missing here. Gene Keady made some ridiculous comment along the lines of ?if parents would do what Knight did at home coach Knight wouldn?t have to.? There?s a genius theory if ever I?ve heard one. Keady?s another of the coaching profession?s dinosaurs who simply doesn?t get it in this case. There is no need to put your hands on someone else?s child. None.

When I was in the Army we had a 1SGT who told us every morning if you don't like what I do, we can go behind the barracks and settle it. Several people tried it and he beat the living isht out of them. We had this guy about 5' 1" to join the unit about 6 months later and during the challenge the little guy took the 1SGT behind the barracks and when they returned, the 1SGT got the isht kicked out of him. I see Bobby Knight as that 1SGT, that he will give anyone a chance to whip his arse. But on the other hand, a father knows his Son best and he sent him to play for Bobby for a reason. The father said his Son needed that. As our coach implated in us; that it is not the player who gets whipped on a play, but I want player who can recover. But if you get whipped on every play you have a problem with me.

Yeah MH. That's what I'm suggesting. We need some coaches to put they foot in some of these guys asses. Naw man. I'm not advocating abusing the guys (or girls). I'm advocating making men and women out of them. Now, how do we do that? (@ the coaching level)

Nice synopsis MD. Very nice!

I didn't have to read any further.

yeah, that might take care of any discipline problems, but no amount of screaming, choking, slapping, etc will give them some skills they don't have or make them win games.

sorry, but you can't get blood from a turnip.
no matter how much you slap it, holler at it, or whoop it.

But you'll have that turnip not *F*'ing up like it previously did or shouldn've done in the first place the next time out though brah! lol

It's a lot of dead turnips in the SWAC. Watch these basketball scores against ALL SWAC teams (ladies inclusive) over the next few weeks. :retard: Lopsided. Weak. Sorry. Pitiful. Putrid. And this is against I-As (naturally) as well as other I-AAers. Just watch! And this has been going on for quite a while. So, when do we finally put a stop to it? lol

MH you are not arguing the incident. Stop bringing in his past actions. For that single "incident" does it warrant a termination in Knight's job?

BTW, I don't like Bobby Knight, but I got enough sense (Thanks Rob) to know when something is blown totally out of proportion.

I'm quite certain there was a knucklehead or two in the group who deserved to get whooped upside the head

Sure there were knuckleheads on the team. Hell I was one of them from time to time. But me or anyone else on the team got hit by the coach for being a knucklehead. Now our parents might have got us if they found out.

So slapping the kids upside the head is suppose to solve this?

If a turnip just can't shoot, then that turnip just can't shoot. Period.
You can stand there and scream til the cows come home, slap the turnip, curse the turnip, but, the turnip still can't shoot.

What do you expect, when you're scheduling road game after game against teams with way more resources and much better "turnips"

Yeah MD...........I agree. I love the old school when it comes to discipline.

And if it was my head it would have been the last case he threw.

So what if you couldn't beat him and got your arse kicked.......we you come back and kill him or something. Just asking. Because I saw many times a kid try to buck up and get his arse whooped worser than the past for trying to stand up to a coach or band director or a military official......shole nuff did.

I lol at all these folks saying who's arse they would kick if it was them......

But I digress.......

Like I told Get Ready years ago on this board. They don't make them like they used to. :(

Seriously if a kid went to play for Knight he knows what he is going to get. Just like I knew going SU and being in the Jukebox was going to be much more intense than other places and I also knew the Navy was going to be intense as well. Those were my choices and I had to suck it up and be a man or you can quit.

But that turnip can set a proper pick, then roll. Or it can box out and rebound. Or it can make a good pass. Let's not limit this to shooting. There are tons of things even the least of athletes can do to help a team.

There are 8 million stories to tell bout how hard we were raised.

but that stuff doesnt work in this day and age.

I guess if/when Knight seriously injures a kid, then yall will just pass it off as the kid knew what he was getting into.

:smh:

You can coach, and you can be a hard arse coach, without crossing the line to hit, slap, choke the players.

I was responding to your post saying Knight's antics won't make a turnip shoot better when it can't shoot.

It does work...........Jay Bilas said Coach K is the same way.......so now what is your point. The problem now is folks are too damn soft period. A bunch of pansies. I am glad I had some Bob Knight hard arse folks during my development. The only place it does not work is the pro's because of the money folks get paid.

Carry on.
