I played baseball at every level except the pros, and some coaches were tough and some were not. However, it's one thing to teach a kid a tough lesson through yelling and it's another to lay a hand on a kid. Touching with in reason to get your point across is cool, but slapping, punching and hitting is crossing the line--no matter who the coach is.

I don't think that's true. Bobby Knight was fired from Indiana because of the Neil Reed thing. Larry Eustachy was fired from his job at Iowa St. due to drinking with college coeds. So don't play the race card.

Can't go with you on that one........Chaney at Temple had some run ins during his tenure........and something tells me Big John Thompson may have had to straighten some folks out.
It is really about old school vs new school. Old school coaches did that kind of thing. I am not saying all of them did. But I saw that in High School and in Jr High.
Heck I remember seeing a certain current band director in the SWAC do some things while I was in HS that would not be deemed appropriate these days.:nod:

Do you all understand the <b>contract</b> between a coach and his players? If you do, you'll see nothing @ all wrong w/ what Knight did. If it were my kid, I would've jumped on the floor and batch slapped him before Knight even got to him.

I figured somebody would play the "if Bobby Knight was black" card eventually.
While what Knight did was really minor, he fails to realize that he has a huge bullseye on his chest, and his every move will be scrutinized. Even though the player, the player's parents, and the AD have all cleared Knight of any wrongdoing, he has to realize that he can't get away with the types of tactics he could have 20 years ago.

I think little Johnny should get his @ss kicked too instead of a phuggin timeout, that's why they're kickin the teachers @sses in their own classroom . But then again I grew up when women didn't dictate what a man should be.
The bottomline is the parents didn't have a problem with it so why should we?

Rob, I had some of the toughest coaches ever coming up. I have been cussed, called the p word, and everything else under the sun. But I have never been hit in the face by a coach. Yeah kids are soft today. Yeah they need more discipline. My mom even slapped me before. But that still doesn't condone what it. My kids get on my nerves everyday but I don't slap them or punch them in the face.
Now let me ask this, if that dude had punched Knight's azz back in the face what would would have been the correct response from the player?

Did you watch the film? It wasn't a tap on the jaw. He made a fist and hit up on the guys chin. And kill the old man crap about when you grew up. So what. That still doesn't make it right. I got whipped with extension cords, sticks, or whatever I my mom could get her hands on. I don't agree with every way of discipline my parents used. Just because they did it doesn't make it right.

No he wasn't. He was fired because he grabbed a kid by the arm when the kid said "what's up Knight." He said the kid shouldn't address him that way. That was after the University had put him on a zero tolorence rule.

Thanks for the pic. I have seen this footage many times and I haven't seen anything to create a fuss. The kid wasn't looking at Knight and Knight lifted the boy's head (with a little force) and said, "look at me!" There was no punch or slap or closed fist. Knight mighta used two fingers to do what he did.
He basically lifted the kid's chin. Again I say.......OVERBLOWN.
Like I said, Knight will get criticized for the least little thing now. Before you know it, folk will be saying he had the poor child in a choke hold while the kid was trying to tap out.

So what is too much? The reason Knight gets all this attention is because of what he does and has done. If he would quit putting himself in these situations then he wouldn't be under this microscope.

That pic doesn't show the force of Knight's fist hitting the guys chin. I guess we'll just have to agree to disagree on this one because there is nothing anyone can say to make me think what Knight did was ok.
