Best Soul Food/Down Home Joints


How in the world did I forget Ms. Collins. I love that place but, I can't eat there everyday. If I did, I'd be looking like one of the Klumps because her banana pudding is to die for. My sister likes Big Mama's on McDowell Rd in South Jackson & a 2nd location on Hwy 80 in Pearl.

Kema, I used to be a fan of The Praline Connection, but not anymore, the food is still pretty good, but just not my flavor anymore. They've become more of a tourist restaurant like a lot of other New Orleans spots, and when they make the change, the food goes down, and the prices go up. Sort of like Mother's, 2 Sisters, and Dookie Chase.


I like Deanie's but I hate going to Bucktown, and the last few times I've been there the food has been on the bland side.

DNICE: Why do you go to Bucktown when it is one behind the Ritz Carlton on Canal? Me and Mike almost ate the table clothes it was so darn good! The boiled shrimp and potatos...the margaritas. We went there for our anniversary last year. We were in the Ritz Carlton on Canal and we asked the locals what was good and in walking distance but not on Bourbon....The bellhop told us to walk out the side entrance and look up diagonally across the street to see Deanie's.

We found out they have one in Bucktown but I can not remember where bucktown is located.

J4J, that restaurant is fairly new, and as you can probably tell by now, I don't do a lot dining in the Canal Street, French Quarter (outside of Emeril's NOLA) area. I like the good New Orleans kitchen type places, but if I'm doing top notch dining, more than likely it won't be in downtown.

I used to love Zachary's, black owned, good food, reasonably priced, and close to the crib. Do you know if it's still black owned? That blackened redfish they had, always made me want to lick the plate.

When I'm home, these are my spots:

Dunbar's - If you're not afraid to go Uptown in New Orleans, then you should definitely go to DB's. I don't know if they still have all you can eat red beans on Monday Night's, but the place is aw'ight.


Henry's - Again if you're not afraid to go Uptown, then the place on S. Claiborne & 2nd Street is worth the trip. Get the meat loaf, or pork chops, and tell em Peanut sent cha.

Jack Dempsey's - Wouldn't classify this as a soul food spot, but the soul seafood is nice. Even though it's in the 9th Ward I have no problem giving this place a thumbs up.

Dookie Chase - Nationally renowned chef Leah Chase owns this place, I wouldn't call it a soul food spot either, but more of a soul cuisine restaurant. It's across the street from the project, but you'll be safe as long as you're going into Dookie's.

Anita's - One of my favorite spots, the food is not as cheap as it used to be, but you still get your money's worth. For those that've seen me chow down, you know if I can't finish a whole breakfast from there, then it's a lot of food. Those ghetto omellette's, and pancakes are to die for.

You got it Nice! These 2 places will make you eat yourself to death in New Orleans. Can't forget the Trolley Stop on St. Charles for that late night/early morning breakfast. I'm no so big on Mother's either

:jump: Yes indeed! We went to Amy Ruth's last week when we were in New York and it was DA BOMB. After being in 2 African countries that were 95% Muslim, I had to have some PORK! I ordered smothered pork chops, grits and cabbage. It was to die for!! The cabbage had slices of jalapeno pepper, the grits were creamy and the pork chops were covered with thick brown gravy. Lawd, Lawd, Lawd!

In Baton Rouge, the best soul food places are Silver Spoon and Houseman's. :tup:

I went to a place in Birmingham last year (with C-Leb, Mach, the band fan, and Q-Storm) during the SWAC Media called La Vase. That is one of the best places I have been. The thing I like most about them is that they don't serve nor cook any of their food with pork.

In South Dallas next to Fair Park there is a joint/hole in the wall called Vern's Place. I haven't been there in a while but dayum!!! Its good!!! :tup:

And of course...Mother's (New Orleans)

M&M's Soul Food - (Inglewood, Calif.)

Roscoe's Chicken and Waffles - (Los Angeles, Ca.)

Ethels Snack Shack...(When it was open)

If you go, I recommend the soul platter where you choose a combination of things (bbq ribs, beef brisket, pulled pork, bbq chicken, sweet potatoes, collard greens, sweet corn muffins, etc.), they put it in a bucket and you go for what you know....,

As far as BBKing's, there is nothing special there to me other than the name...,

The atmosphere in Isaac Hayes is more upscale which makes one question the how good the food is, but believe a brother it is eemmm goood.

Some other places in Memphis that's truly for real would be Meleanie's off of Watkins, (she got that butterroll going on as well as some other stuff) and Ellen's off of South Parkway. Like I said those are just a few, but Memphis is loaded with good soul food places.

now..hispanics are cooking the food in some restaurants in Houston...you got to watch that now...the owners aren't doing anything but servig if that...

Not a big fan of the well known ones, Roscoes, M&M's

Aunt Kizzy's Backporch it is feeling very commercialized now. So true..

You can say that if you want to. However, I experienced breakfast at Frank's on Telephone Rd. and those Hispanics that cooked that breakfast can cook my breakfast anytime. It was de-lish-us. :tup:

Ellen's has a webpage!!! I ws there last summer and they did not even have a printed menu. They are a little to down home for me.
I drove by Melanie's twice today. That food is the bomb. She has an even nicer location on 51 north of the city.
There is another almost as good but I can not call the name. It also starts witn an "M"
I toured I. H. but I have never been there to eat. I actually thaought it was a club that also served food and I do not do clubs.
I KEEP HEARING ABOUT THE GOOD BBQ IN MEMPHIS. WHERE IS IT?

I have passed by Frank's a million times over the years (it has been there a long time), but I have never had the nerves to go in there. I might have to check it out now.
