Since we have talked about chicken shacks, what are you favorite soul food/down home restaurants?

I went to a place in Birmingham last year (with C-Leb, Mach, the band fan, and Q-Storm) during the SWAC Media called La Vase. That is one of the best places I have been. The thing I like most about them is that they don't serve nor cook any of their food with pork.

In South Dallas next to Fair Park there is a joint/hole in the wall called Vern's Place. I haven't been there in a while but dayum!!! Its good!!! :tup:

And of course...Mother's (New Orleans)

M&M's Soul Food - (Inglewood, Calif.)

Roscoe's Chicken and Waffles - (Los Angeles, Ca.)
 
In Houston, my preferences are Mikki's and This Is It. I heard there is a good on on Gessner, but haven't gotten the name or exact location. So if any Houstonians are familiar, help a Sista out.

Never heard of Mikki's, LMBH, where is it located?

Mikki's is located in a strip center off HWY 59 at Bellfort.

I've passed by Pearl's on many occasions and wondered if it was an ok Soul Food restaurant. That will be next on my list.
 
I love Roscoe's Chicken & Waffles in L.A.

In Jackson, there's a spot called BULLY's that serves "soul" food. It's been a while since I've been there but, the line used to be out the door.
 
MOthers Fish House - had the best fish in the state, them new cats have changes something.

Billy Burks - Right around the corner from Sumner High School in the Ville (North St. Louis). Man them burgers be so damn good!!!!!

Sara Lou's - On the corner of Sarah and St. Louis Avenue in North St. Louis. I used to get 4 wings with some cheese fries and extra tauter sauce.

Im getting hungry now.
 
There was a place called Zachary's uptown that I loved, the owners sold it, now its Margeaux's (owned by some others). The lunch buffet is still the same food but I believe that they've made the dinner menu a little more upscale. The Baquet family opened up a new place called Lil Dizzy's on Esplanade.

Sammy's on Elysian Fields ave.

The Praline Connection is pretty good.
 
In Baton Rouge,

The Table is Bread is pretty good I enjoyed it

The Chicken Shack of course.

:jump: Yes indeed! We went to Amy Ruth's last week when we were in New York and it was DA BOMB. After being in 2 African countries that were 95% Muslim, I had to have some PORK! I ordered smothered pork chops, grits and cabbage. It was to die for!! The cabbage had slices of jalapeno pepper, the grits were creamy and the pork chops were covered with thick brown gravy. Lawd, Lawd, Lawd!

In Baton Rouge, the best soul food places are Silver Spoon and Houseman's. :tup:

Is that place still open, when I lived there some years ago, I believe it had a different name, but the food was great.

Here in Shreveport, Pete Harris is the place to go for your down home lunches. Brothers in the Entertainment District is also a good soul food place, copy cat of Pete Harris.

Now I was taken to a hole in the wall in Memphis and they had the best big bone buffalo fish, I can still taste it.

Ok, time to figure out what I want for lunch...

Man this place is one of the most overrated places in New Orleans. If you're not in running mode as you usually are, after SU tap's that arse, you can roll with us after the BC, and get a REAL MEAL.

I used to love Zachary's, black owned, good food, reasonably priced, and close to the crib. Do you know if it's still black owned? That blackened redfish they had, always made me want to lick the plate.

When I'm home, these are my spots:

Dunbar's - If you're not afraid to go Uptown in New Orleans, then you should definitely go to DB's. I don't know if they still have all you can eat red beans on Monday Night's, but the place is aw'ight.

Henry's - Again if you're not afraid to go Uptown, then the place on S. Claiborne & 2nd Street is worth the trip. Get the meat loaf, or pork chops, and tell em Peanut sent cha.

Jack Dempsey's - Wouldn't classify this as a soul food spot, but the soul seafood is nice. Even though it's in the 9th Ward I have no problem giving this place a thumbs up.

Dookie Chase - Nationally renowned chef Leah Chase owns this place, I wouldn't call it a soul food spot either, but more of a soul cuisine restaurant. It's across the street from the project, but you'll be safe as long as you're going into Dookie's.

Anita's - One of my favorite spots, the food is not as cheap as it used to be, but you still get your money's worth. For those that've seen me chow down, you know if I can't finish a whole breakfast from there, then it's a lot of food. Those ghetto omellette's, and pancakes are to die for.

DNICE: When is the last time you have been to Praline Connection. My first time a few years ago; it was off the chain. We went this summer and it left me wondering whatdahellisgoinon?

I won't go back to them again....ever.

There is a place on St. Charles...or is it Claiborne in a little shack of a house/building...can't call the name but the food was good when I went there with an Aunt who lives on Fern.

In Houston, it is the one downtown that Jason's Lyric was filmed in...can't call the name for nothing. I don't know too many others...

When I was a kid, Aunt Kizzy's Backporch was the lick. I went 3 years ago and it is feeling very commercialized now. It was good but not like it WAS.

I am looking for some info on a place in N'awlins called La Vato's or Lavado's Fish & Seafood. It was under I-10 on the perimeter of The Quarter. This place had the best Fish Loaf, Shrimp Loaf, Oyster Loaf that I had ever put in my mouth. Man, my wife and I drove to N'awlins on a couple of occaisions on the weekend just to get these tasty morsels. Keep in mind this was 20 or 25 years ago. So Good............

Zachary's or Margeaux's is not black-owned anymore. Its two sisters that own it now and they're putting a twist on the menu (meaning is being fancified and the prices are going up).

Jack Dempsey's is good but I prefer Deanie's.

Dookie Chase - ungghhh, they're OK.

I need to find the other places that you have up there.
 
In Jackson MS, your best bet is Collins' on Terry Road. I used to love Bully's but like Fortitude I haven't eaten there in years. My mom claims its not as good anymore.
 
Kema, I used to be a fan of The Praline Connection, but not anymore, the food is still pretty good, but just not my flavor anymore. They've become more of a tourist restaurant like a lot of other New Orleans spots, and when they make the change, the food goes down, and the prices go up. Sort of like Mother's, 2 Sisters, and Dookie Chase.

Jagg Diva, I put Dookie Chase on my list, because it's still has a place in my heart, sure it's not what is used to be, again the tourist thing, but when I sit back, and look at what Mrs. Chase did, it's remarkable. To think that a black woman could open a restaurant in the heart of the ghetto, right across the street from a housing project, and become nationally known speaks volumes of the service she provided, and the food she delivered.

I like Deanie's but I hate going to Bucktown, and the last few times I've been there the food has been on the bland side.

Another spot I used to love in New Orleans, and I don't know if it's still there is Cafe Benet. It's/was on Washington Avenue next to Rhodes Funeral Home, they have great smothered pork chops, meatloaf, baked chicken, greens, cornbread, and macaroni & cheese. I know I have a Uptown bias, but that's where I'm from.

Straw, I've never heard of the place in which you speak, it must be closed now. A lot of what used to be in that area of town, has closed down, been re-opened, or went over a major change, but I'll ask around, and see if it's still there.
