Anybody who has marched at JSU (or SWAC bandheads) should know that MARCHING bands is NOT Doc's area of expertise! And like jaydog said, the ones who really made the BOOM great during football season are no longer there: Duplessis, Adams and Magruder. But people (in general) wouldn't know that, if they weren't on the inside or had a big interest.

Nonetheless and with the absense of some dynamic band directors who have been at JSU, Doc has still managed to keep a solid program! And the program KEEPS growing and continually gets honors. And that was my bottom line for those who think he should go.

****, don't get on him too hard CS. With the quality of assistant band directors that the Boom has lost over the past five years, they really should be flat on their dayum faces. I for one thought it was going to all completely fall apart when Paul I Adams left, followed by Magruder. They have struggled in some areas. You don't lose over 60 years of expertise with Pop, Paul I, Magruder, and Bethea and not struggle in some areas for a few years. The new assistants they have will be alright, but they are young and inexperienced. They're biggest concern at this stage of their career is no making Liddell mad. I still remember the nights when Liddell and Paul I would get into it. That was some funny ****.

I talk to Pop about 2 twice a month....It is a shame the way Doc treated Pop in the end,,,That is why he all of sudden retired and did not tell anyone.....including me till it happened.......!!!!!!!!


People have tried to help Dr. Liddell...but he turns down the help and does not embrace the tradition that the Sonic Boom once had........

Plus Doc has kept KKY from returning ...Which they need very badly....
The probation is over...What is the hold up?????

He is cheating those guys out their chance to be part of the rich KKY brotherhood.

Plus it does raise the eye about the contstant band staff changes within the past 15 years.......

I heard one of the former legend Sonic Boom director Harold Haughton when he came back to see a JSU home game that the current Sonic Boom has a major lack of discipline and respect.

I am not trying to get in JSU business of how to handle band directors, but I think only JSU members that marched in the band should post on this thread.....not trying to offend anyone, I know if we were talking about Griff, then I would only want to talk about it to other SOUND members....and in the private forum for ASU members.

From a person who knows nothing about bands..(aint that right Critaucal..snicker), I think that the best decision he could have made was to go to WSSU to get band director experience. He is loved at JSU and that credential will not hurt his resume. How is WSSU doing anyway?? They are about to transition into the MEAC.

Now, I wish I played football at JSU so that I could have an opinion on the football team. :idea:

Alumni, fans and the community have input also. They are the ones that provide support and donations to purchase new band uniforms and etc. Band members will come and go, but alumni, the community and fans will remain.

Show you're saying the Boom had no showtime before Dowell Taylor? That's a slap at Harold Haughton who actually developed most of the traditions of the Boom that D. Taylor used.


But as far as halftime's go, it will never be the same for any band as it was ten to fifteen years ago simply because of rule changes. SWAC halftime shows use to last 12-15 minutes. I know in '94 we did a couple of 20 minute halftime shows. Our dance routines use to last 5 minutes. Now because of rule changes, mainly to accomodate TV time, most show are only 8-10 minutes at the most. Dance routines normally last only 90 seconds to 2 minutes at the most. Today's shows are like fast forward, snippets. There is no set-up, very little time for extra features, slow songs, and the like. These days you can only pick a few things to include in the shows. Even the Tiger Run-On has been abbreviated to cut out time. Most fans don't even realize these things though. Don't get me wrong, you still get some good halftime shows from bands at times, but the best shows take place in battle of the bands, where there are no time restrictions.

Most marching bands are now very much stand bands. That's why they get there basically an hour before the game and leave an hour afterward. Most bands see the stands as being as important as the field shows now.

The old BAND members ARE the alumni (and fans) who give back many times and are the ones who remain!

True and not true. Band members don't just come and go. They become part of that band's family, and become that band's true voice and advocates among the alumni. SU oldheads don't just forget about the band when they leave, neither do the Boom's, or Gramblings, or FAMU's, or so forth. They follow and support them through good or bad, thick or thin. Alumni and fans do to some degree, but not to the degree of the oldheads. They Boom is like immediate family within the extended JSU family.

And sad to say, but JSU fans unfortunately have big mouths about what needs to be done, but tight pockets when its time to pay for it.:smh:

Looking at the polls, 65% of the people have voted to get rid of Liddell. Of that 65%, I'm willing to bet that more than half don't know what they're talking about, never been in a band and don't how the full role of Dr. Liddell as Director of BANDS. :smh:

And this is a Jag talking. That's puzzling. The only group that I would readily admits live for the program more than the oldhead Boom is the Jukes. Both are tight knit families.

It all falls under the category of be careful what you ask for. The grass is not always greener on the other side.

But truth be told Liddell will never be very popular. He is following a legend in Taylor that many people feel got shafted on his way out. Most fans that don't know think Taylor was the beginning of a lot of the "showtime" the Boom had mainly because his era was the beginning of the TV era for black schools where you saw the Boom on BET a lot. But most of that started with Harold Haughton and some even before him. Don't get me started on the history of the Boom. My daddy marched in the Boom before they even had the nickname Sonic Boom.
