Baritones looke here

Yeal, if your listening from the GoodYear blimp....... While we're at it, why dont we all awitch to concert French Horns instead of "mellophones?!" Or at least use F Horn mouthpieces(Seriously..... Thats why FAMU's F Horns sound so dark.)

For me, I'd rather that natural, sweeter F Horn sound than the piercing, trumpet-like sound of today's mellophone section. You CAN'T overblow on an F Horn mouthpiece. And when most of these converted trumpet players play mellophone, they make the instrument sound like a wild mongoose in heat.

In 99 they only had like 9. My crab year we had 8 (started with like 16).

We had 10 in 99.. We had 9 at one game "the Alcorn game" when Vj got sick... He was a factor in that section and even that 9 sounded like the horns ain't miss a beat at all.....

No disrespect to 2000 fhorn section but 2000 (8 horns) and 89 (8 horns) were night and day... 95 ended up with 4 Fhorns but I wouldn't mention them in this confo. because they honestly wasn't kicking no arse....

'95 was a loud azz band! Louder (and better )than 94, and I played in 94. The f-horn just kinda got overpowered by the lower brass.

You are right about the sound, but not right about the mouthpiece. I have a couple of kids in my local HS band who can do it. However, about six of our mellophone players in marching band are oboe players in concert band. They are not a force in marching band, but they can really make those oboes speak.

I appreciate the musicianship neccesary to play the Oboe, and Bassoon. I played them both in concert band.

OK, let me rephrase myself, because there are exceptions to everything.

In general, it is less common to hear obvious overblowing when using a French Horn mouthpiece. Even when you do, it is nowhere near as pronounced as when you use a mellophone with a trumpet mouthpiece.

I my homeboy @ J State(White-boy Nick) went for his audition before went to band camp and those 'hoods' stole his bassoon! Like, HIS personal bassoon! Black folks don't know what to do with a bassoon, well at least not the ones who would break into someones car and still one.

They started off with about 13 or 14, they had 13 or 14 at their first game.... BUt once almost all of the upperclassmen got zipped they were down to maybe 2, then they got two trumpet players to switch... As far as 95 being better than 94.. In my opinion 95 was much stronger than 94 but I liked 94 style better than 95... 95 played to short for what SU is/was used to doing....94 had more feeling than the 95 band in my opinion. 95 had one of those sounds to where you had to hear them in person to hear how unreal their power was, but on tape their sound isn't as exciting as the other SU bands...

You remember that, huh? :teleport:

I remember that, because Vj talk alot of shat about him being the section, and we never let him forget how much of a beast those 9 fhorns were with out him at that home game when we played Alcorn... Yes indeed I remember...lol

Yeah, dude can scream too, which most folks don't know. He just aint wanna compromise his mouth for concert season.

Oh, another tidbit of info: his brother was trombone section leader at FAMU '04 and I think '05 also.

Yeah man, I know all them lil dudes from Landry, I saw Quick and Jeremy and Jamal(Jeremy's brother) over the holidays, I haven't seen 'Street in about a year, probably Mardi Gras last year. I saw Ronald during football season on the yard. All of them are pretty good people and they still check in and hang out with Derrick Hilliard like he still their section leader, but thats the westbank sticking together.

You are so correct. Quite frankly, I abhor the sound of mellophones. Much too strident as compared to french horn. But, I tolerate them in marching band.
