 I'm not, by any means, tring to discredit anyone's opinion or band program but someone please tell me what are you basing the criteria of these posts on. I'm a seasoned bandsmen and I have seen many of you all this year but it seems to me that its a Louisiana/Mississippi thing with a few other schools here and there. Young people, please leave you're opinions out of this and challenge your BRAIN to comment with facts and facts ONLY.

 Remember, the band is about MUSIC first, then ENTERTAINMENT. Everything else is just extra to whoevers advantage. Hopefully from here on out, these post will become a little more sensible and realistic....(walks out)

Humm... There is truly a need to see the View. Must have been improvements in PV. The last time I saw them they were not that impressive. Looking forward to seeing and hearing them this weekend.

TXSU has power, but no contol, Let some of your Wood winds be heard
and tone down on your BASS drums, they out power the band.

Jackson, Baritones need to be heard, good on mellophones

SU, your trumpets have gone down the drain, your band is about your trumpets

PB, good Job

PV, work on the mellophone, work on the baritones, good on trombones

the only school that i have see what had a good field show was Alcorn, hard work and dedications pays off i see.

UAPB, dont you ever come to the boot again and try to Imatate grambling on the field, we can never be duplicated. but you was good in the stands
next time be your self and Dont let Mr. Evans :retard: turn you into Another grambling.

But any ways

man, the way how i rated was not on who can blow the loudest, but on musician ship.

UAPB and ALCORN, sounds musical this year

TXSU, JACKSON, SOUTHERN, PVAMU Play to damn loud, tone down, make your music sound musical, and not like sections tryna out power each other.

i cant say nothing on ALabama State, MVSU, or AAMU, cause i havent heard how they are this year.

and i know that SWAC bands are known as POWER HOUSE BANDS, with all that sound, but come on, alot of listeners dont like all that. There are alot of musicians who listen to the musicianship. :jump:

I think best band is really trying to give some merit to alcorn so do us a favor and post some audio's on this site so that we can see or hear what you mean....be warned that if ya'll sound like isht, everybody is going to let you have it for arguing a case that doesn't matter......let me go on record saying that i am going to open my mind and give the benefit of the doubt.........

Hmmmm,......

You got this one dude.

how can you put southern university before any one, BLASTING is a non-musical tone.

There are other elements elements of music then playing "FORTE"

Just listen to the bands that have STEREO sound this year. If they sound like "CD Quality" then they are true Musicians.

:read: Examples Please
You know,....I'm just curious,....
I mean,.... what elements or qualities in the musicality of marching bands constitutes stereo sound or CD quality???
In other words ,....what do you look and listen for to determine what is pleasing to your ears?

I'm not tryin' to bust your balls,.....I'm just curious and want to hear another point of view other than my own.

You won't get CD quality out of a marching band unless they're on a CD at that moment. You can "doctor" up the sound or whatever but a CD is virtually in a sound vaccuum. With a marching band, you have sound coming from the crowd, the air moving throught the horn (yup, there's a point where you can even hear someone's articulation just BEFORE they hit the mouthpiece) and the echoes in whatever stadium you play in adding to the sound that travels to your ear too. With a CD, you hear the BAND for the most part and nothing else. PV wouldn't sound so much the same on a CD (in a studio that is) that they would in person. They'd sound pretty darn good at both ends but on a CD, you wouldn't hear that "wind" from the first row of brass in concert formation. Just to clarify.

man what school do you go to? the way i am reading it, you are making excuses to why your band is not blowing on the level that the other bands are blowing on,,,,,let me make you clear on this, although we(PV, TXSU,SU, GRAM or whoever) blow hard and strong does not mean that we are not musical, you are looking for excuses to why your band is getting blown out...get off your azz and take each section in your band into the woodshed and practice blowing the walls down, the more ya'll practice hard and loud, the clarity is going to soon follow.....here is a note, practice more and make excuses less.......we, the power bands will not take pity on ya'll just because ya'll chose to play soft and clear, grow up and realize that noone cares about excuses.... :licky:

first think ill do is:

1. listen to see if any section is hold out, or over powering any one else.

2. listen to see if the woodwinds can be heard, you no in most swac bands the wood winds can not be heard. Wood winds are a very important instrument, when it comes to music.
3. I listen to see how the cords are set up
4. I listen for that open sound like something is missing
5. And then if i can close my eyes and the band sound like a CD is playin, then i can say they have CD quality. Only 4 bands have prove that to me this year -- JSU, UAPB, ALCORN and PVUAM.

I know this my sound stupid or what not, but we all have our own methods, so dont put my method down.....

To set the record straight, i attend Grambling, A power band like you said!!!!

Those previos 2 posts are a complete contradiction. Some of the things you are looking for aren't even present in your own program.

About this wodwind thing (cuz I keep seeing/hearing it come up in different conversations)......They are WOODWINDS!!!!!!! You don't even hear a symphony's woodwinds unless you are in a concert hall where everyone is quiet. If you are 75 yards away on the other side of the field, how clearly will you hear a clarinet section playig in mid-range with 30,000 fans creating noise???

IMO, some people look for unrealistic concepts when it comes to band, some that are not present in their own program.

(FYI, Gram is not a power band)
