An Alabama State University committee has been formed to investigate the Hornets' football program.
Sandra Malone, who works in ASU president Joe Lee's office, confirmed the existence of the committee. Malone said she had no knowledge of its size, who is on the committee or what it will investigate.
Several other ASU officials, while denying any involvement with the committee, also said they've heard of the investigation.
"I know that I've heard strong rumors," assistant athletic director and compliance officer John Ivery said. "No one has come right out and told me, but I've been led to believe that an investigation is taking place. If it is taking place, it would be something the president originated."
Lee was not in his office on Thursday and wasn't available for comment.
While he denied any involvement in the investigation, Ivery said he is aware of rules violations by the ASU football program.
"There's been a couple of things that I've noticed," Ivery said. "I would rather not get into the specifics of those right now."
Ivery said it wouldn't surprise him if the investigation focuses on misappropriation of funds by football coaches and the use of ineligible players.
"From what I've seen, I would say that those two things would definitely be a part of (the investigation)," Ivery said. "Yes, both of those."
Richard Cosby, who took over in November as ASU's athletic director, also said he wasn't sure of the specifics but had heard about the investigation.
"I know what you're talking about and I've heard the same things around here," said Cosby. "It was obviously something that they decided to do before I was brought here, because I'm not involved in it."
Another person apparently not involved is football coach L.C. Cole.
"I don't have any idea about anything like that going on around here," Cole said. "If they're doing it, they're obviously keeping it from me. I haven't heard the first word about it from anybody."
Cole wonders why others seem to be aware of an investigation that he knows nothing about.
"You would think they would come to me if there was a problem," Cole said. "I'm not sure how they handle investigations here because I've never been a part of one, but I would have thought they would come to me first and we could handle any problems. I'm totally in the dark here. I guess I'll have to just wait and see what happens like everybody else."
