Any comments or excuses on attendance?

You all have to realize that Shreveport sounds more country than Bham than some people. LOL Who knows about Shreveport? You can't even fly into Shreveport.

That may be true, but isn't that where they play The Independence Bowl? If it is the case, people will go if they want to. The SWAC as a conference needs to take it self more seriously when it comes to attracting better talent (players and coaches). When that happens, I don't think we will be having these coversations. This every event being a "Classic" mentality really isn't helping. Things should progress to including entertainment at championship games rather than trying to make it the main attraction. Was the CIAA championship weekend well attended before it became an entertainment spectacle?

ummm is drawing a big attendance the main purpose of the SWAC tournament?
:smh:

YES!!! It's all about money... and more attendees means more mullah!!!

It is still early and as stated hopefully Saturday's attendance will be nice.

For the record, I only advocated Shreveport for the SCG in football...I think Jackson is a good neutral location for basketball. In Louisiana, the High School Boys Tourney is going on... Not many from Monroe Carroll gonna be in Shreveport eventhough local juggernaut Grambling, fresh off defeating NIT Bound JSU, will be in the finals.

Man, who would be showing up to Jackson this weekend with all the Mississippi Schools out? Even though I don't think it makes a huge difference, I'm actually in favor of the Tournament in Shreveport #1 because it's in a nice arena and is closer to most SWAC Schools. Although I liked the tournament being here in Birmingham, most SWAC gyms are better facilities than the Fair Park Arena.

I think we should give Shreveport a few more years to see what they can do to build up the event. But if that don't work I'd be in favor of either taking the tournament back to campus sites or scrapping it altogether.

Another thing, why everybody want to compare the SWAC tournament with the CIAA. The CIAA tourney is an anomoly, and they have a special brand that exploded around the right time. They outdraw the PAC-10 and SEC... They are a basketball conference, we are not. Instead we should concentrate on trying to grow the tournament and conference by doing what's best for the SWAC.

The avg Shreveportian ain't attending a bball game for 30$. :emlaugh:

Good job SWAC!
when I first saw that on the website a few weeks ago, I just shook my head. That price would probably turn away the neutral, local joe who might have been inclined to attend. But $30?
:scared:

Why do y'all continue to harp on location .... football is genuinely the only one where that is going to matter. There are greater attendance numbers on the Western side of the conference for a myriad of reasons.

With basketball and baseball, it's going to be the same case ANYWHERE we go .... if the SWAC doesn't make it an event and not just a collection of games in one central area, it won't matter if it's in DCG's backyard (umm, check that .... it might matter then b/c I would be there), Xhale's backyard (I'd be there too ) or Get Ready's rent house.

The biggest problem is no one goes to the SWAC Tournament to see the tournament. Most people go to see their school and when their school loses they go home. I've been to the tournament about 5 to 7 times BM (before marriage). Every year I went I stayed for the SWAC Championship game. I went to the tournament. The years TSU won made the tournament that much better.

I went one year and Texas Southern didn't make to the tournament (It was the year they moved the tournament from Dallas because TSU and PV made it to the finals (PV won the tournament that year). The very next year the SWAC put the tournament in Baton Rouge on Southern's campus and they (SU) still loss. Because SU played the last game on Saturday and the game ended around 11 o'clock or later and they had to turn around and play an early tip off on Sunday against Alcorn.)

Should we all come to the realization that maybe...just maybe no matter where the tournament is held, what time of day the game is played or how many duckets it cost for games that the masses are just a tad bit apathetic about the SWAC basketball tournament?

I think with the exception of a few conferences in the country, postseason tourneys don't draw well. I was watching the Pac-10 tournament on TV last night and you could hear the coaches smacking their gum on the sideline. If attendance numbers don't improve, the suits in the main office should sit down and implement measures that put the best interest of the league at the forefront if very little money is being made by holding the tournament.

Why does the tournament have to be an event for folks to be interested in attending? Should the draw be watching competitive basketball with a coveted NCAA tournament birth on the line?

The SWAC will NOT build the BRAND, point blank. If they really want the tournament to succeed, they need to make it "the place to be" for that weekend.

I'm starting to roll towards your idea though .... we can't be making that much off of this tournament and if they are not going to do more with it, save that money and pump up your top championship more.

Do you watch the Super Bowl when the Bears are not in it? Why?

(a) you like football.
(b) you like the spectacle that is the Super Bowl.
(c) That's what everyone is doing that night.

You probably view baseball like I view hockey .... it could be 2am .... if it's on, I'm watching. The majority of our fans, however, do not have that view.

Saturdays in Baton Rouge .... people are at Mumford and Tiger Stadium .... not only because that's their team, but that's what everyone else is doing.

NT you wouldn't be at the game regardless...

Kneegress please!!! I was a regular at JSU basketball games when I was at JSU even on the weekdays. I saw Anthony Mason when he was at tnsu at the AAC and was in attendance when JSU lost to coastal carolina in that bogus play in game. I would also go to some of the baseball games on the weekends. I just love sports and that's what motivates me to point out the short comings of our conference. To be honest, we have regressed to D-II status in a very short period of time. I don't know how it happend, but that's where we are all the way around.

key words: "When I was at JSU..."!!!

You are not going to any of these games NOW regardless of the talent on the teams!!

Man yall please stop telling everyone lies. Yall just like to complain. That's what we as a people do. We love to complain, then when it changes, we complain again.

Yaw mf's don't go and be swearin' up and down that your love for your school is more than life itself and don't be paying alumni dues or donate money. I used to attend a minimum of 2 football games a year until it was apparent that the talent wasn't there anymore (that does not include the Bayou Classic games I attended after I left Jackson). Conference and schools don't take it seriously so why should I. Classic games don't appeal to me because I finally figured it out that it's not about the game. I just listen to the games on the internet and just say to myself that i'm glad that I didn't waste all that money to attend. I would have been mad as H@LL!!!! So I just try to keep up because that's my school.

You think it's a good thing to give up on your school, even when you don't like how things are going.

I followed ****'s garbage ass to PV.

As far the rest...okay. But I still would bet money (and I don't gamble) that you wouldn't attend a game (basketball or football) even if the talent was better on the field. :D

Kneegress, I was at the first SCG in birmingham and went to piston games at auburn hills to watch Lindsey Hunter not because of Grant Hill and Allen Houston. I wanted to hear the announcer say:

FROM JACKSON STATE UNIVERSITY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

So you quote that for somebody else.
