Angel Tree Ideas

I am the sponsor of a group of 6th grade girls at my school. They primarily do community service projects ... once or more a month as a group, and twice a year individually. This month, they decided to pick a name from an angel tree and buy gifts for a child less fortunate.

Wouldn't you know the name we picked was JORDAN, and as far as a wish list, he/she put ANYTHING. We don't know if Jordan is a boy or a girl, although we do know that he/she is 10. Now we don't know what to get. What are some good, unisex gifts that these girls might give to this kid?

They thought of that, but the issue came up ...

"What if he or she is stupid like some of the kids here, and they take it to school, and it gets taken up, and they never get it BACK! Then all our money is gone for NOTHING!!"

So, they nixed that idea.
 
Don't they have inexpensive learning "computers" for that age from $20 and up? Age 10...that's 5th grade right? They have them with all types of subjects, Math, Geography, English, etc. That would be nice. The electronic pets? I'm terrible in this area since I don't have any kids. I don't know what's out there.

I had forgotten about those things! Each of my girls is giving $5, so they could get a edu-toy, and some activities to go with it!

Kellis, one of my "prissier" charges said that gift certificates are "so imPERsonal!" :rolleyes:
 
Gift Certificates to the local movie, then.... or hell buy "it" :D tickets to see some movie, that's not impersonal.
 
Yeah I know, :p How about Videocassettes, since someone mentioned DVD's. Don't know why I'm on this movie kick... :confused: I'll give ya more tomorrow....
 
How do we know if this kid has a VCR or a DVD player? This may be the 21st century, but there are still unfortunate people who don't have these "luxuries".

And so where my girls. This is one of the reasons the CD player was nixed, because what if the kid can't afford CDs to play on it.
 
School supplies: paper, notebooks, pencils, etc.

Personal products of a non-gender type: toothbrushes, combs, brushes, lotion, soap, washcloths and towels

Sports items: a basketball, a softball glove and ball, cheap tennis racket or kids golf clubs.

College sweatshirts and T-shirts
 



20 dollar lap-dance certificate to PNTs.
5 dollar lap-dance by the crack-fiend @ Crystaaaaaals.

Seriously, I like the idea that ABD said w/ the Collegiate shirts/sweat shirts idea. Definitely unisex and definitely a way to promote our case @ the same time.
 
Not purposely disagreeing with BigDawg, but this is a 10 year old. Yes this kid may need these items, but in a 10 year old's eye...this is Christmas. Yes, in some sense they will appreciate having the supplies, but they are saddened because they weren't able to get a toy or something they desired. Needs are good, but this is a ten year old. His/Her mom will appreciate the supplies more than he/she will.

That's why I suggested the edu-toy as Vinita put it. Not only will they learn, but have fun while doing it. Just a thought.
 
The girls I have seen to toss these ideas around to seem to like the idea of a toy/supplies combo ... kind of like a basket ... it's coming together ...

I was thinking along the lines of Pison...err Panthro. :)
If this was a boy, he could 'learn' from this activity. He could recognize quality, learn to stretch his money through an evening of 'less than spetacular talent'. All kinds of stuff.


If this was a girl, you could take her to one of those 'other' joints and tell her this is what she can have when she's 27.
 
Something educational and fun would be good. Also a warm article of clothing would be a good idea, maybe a jacket or sweatshirt that could possibly be for a male or female.

I say a headphone set. Cassette are fairly inexpensive and there is a radio so that "the kid" can listen to the radio when "the kid" doesn't have a cassette.

A board game for a kids his/her age. Them Teckno animals...."L" I want one of them. :lol:

Colors and coloring book. Paint and canvas.
