An Ironic Situation

THE Logical ONE
Many of us have had to remind some of you on several occasions that SWAC teams can still go to the playoffs. Sure, the grass has to be a certain height, the moon has to be full and a turtoise would have to beat a hare in a race but IT IS possible.

This is one of those years that IRONICALLY, it could have happened. For a team to get into the playoff, the top two teams have to be in the same division and not named SU or GSU. This year, if JSU and ASU/AAMU keep on winning, AAMU or ASU will go to the SCG and JSU (if we keep winning) would have been a lock for the playoffs. Unfortunately, JSU can't go but I just wanted to point that out to the naysayers.

TP.
Ain't nobody from the SWAC going to the playoffs.

#1) JSU is banned anyway so we out.
#2) Bamma State not going because they play Tuskeege on Thanksgiving..........2 days before the playoffs start.
#3) Nobody else will be remotely ranked high enough to even get a look from the committee.
#4) We done been through this playoff discussion before and there is no way the SWAC is getting a bid when our conference championship PARTICIPANTS are not even decided until the day the first playoff game is played. And don't forget the fact that our conference champion is not even crowned until the 2nd week of December ---- 3 weeks after the playoffs start.

People didn't want to go to the playoffs, didn't think shat about the playoffs, and our leadership, (The Commish), basically told the world the playoffs don't mean crap to the SWAC, and that old saying about how people think YT's grass is greener was the motto of the day. WE AIN'T GETTING A BID PERIOD. Let it go. The no playoff crowd finally got what they wanted and now that we don't even get looked at, now all of a sudden in the last 2 years, people want to talk playoffs and how we can get in.

Typical folks dont wanna play against good competition they just want to argue about how many fans are at the game and worry about tailgating.....

Then chest thump about beating each other and how "our fans" don't want to see us play a PWC and won't show up. I don't get that thinking because I can name a whole lot of HBCU's that don't draw or bring flies into a stadium. I guess getting 5,000 for a HBCU opponent is somehow greater than getting 5,000 if you bring in a PWC opponent.

And that also say a lot about these fan bases. They don't come for the game. They come for the show in the stands and to be seen before the "after party" at the club. If you like good football and the game features a really good opponent, I would rather see JSU play a SFA, McNeese, Eastern Ill, etc., over some nothing game like Concordia any day of the year.

83, I think you totally missed the point.

The point was IF (the whole point of tread was IF) JSU ends the season at 10-1 and AlaState at 10-1 or even 9-2 depending on the AAMU or TU game, JSU would get an playoff invite.

...and just to be clear, I am a part of the anti-playoffs groups.

I think people wouldn't mind seeing their team, i know i wouldn't mind it and especially go and win not just to compete for moral victories, but just going the playoffs and getting mollywhooped is stupid and dumb also. Some people are just realistic and some aren't. Most HBCU's can't even schedule and beat solid teams during the regular season and some of you are jumping to playoffs. Surely You Jest.

JSU could be 11-0.
The playoff committee ain't gonna wait for the SWAC to finish their season 1 week after everybody else in FCS has. They dang sure not gonna wait for us to decide our champion. There are too many good teams in FCS to fill those slots the week before the playoffs start. Those old 1980's days of FCS running to us has passed this conference by.

I said 4 years ago the anti-playoff crowd won and we better be ready to live with that backwards decision.

Realistically?
3/4 of the teams in this conference would get mollywhooped by a decent D2 team. Won't even get into how bad the TOP D2 teams would run through 3/4 of this conference on a regular basis. That is how far down the ladder we done slid with this "we can't win" attitude, excuses, and isolation.

You just said the Top D2 teams would run through 3/4 of this conference then you turn around and say we have that "we can't win" attitude. Listen to reality vs wishful thinking and pride.:read: Then the AD's are scheduling scrubs like Texas College and Concordia. I can see if all of us were racking up on quality OOC wins, give it a rest please. smh

ISOLATION SINCE 1999.
We have only had to be good enough to beat ourselves for the last 13 years. That is the attitude I'm talking about that festers in this conference since 1999. Scheduling teams like Concordia and Texas College because people in charge are too lazy to get off their azz and actually work to get teams on the schedule. And the fact that we are NOT a playoff participating team has a lot to do with it.

If you were the AD at a school/conference that was in the playoff mix, why would you waste time playing a team that had nothing to lose with a loss compared to your entire playoff post season going up in flames if a SWAC team beat you. Ya'll always look at shat from only the SWAC side and not from the side of a team that go into the playoffs every year.

That's been my whole point. Lazy ADs just need to schedule it. Go play them at their place and beat them. Don't worry about a return game.

Then that complicates future years' schedules.

You only have 2 games to begin with. So yeah it could cause some issues. You definitely better have every year planned out with 2 teams if you can't get a return game from 1. But I would only approach the better FCS schools to do that. Meaning the highly ranked ones. The ones in our local areas can and should be scheduled 2 years at a time. I would like to get NW La State back on the schedule.

I would call Ga Southern up for 2014 or 2015 because you know their ADs aint lazy have their schedule pretty much set up for the next 2 years. Go play somewhere where you could at least make a few inroads in recruiting too. Don't go way up to Montana or somewhere like Northern Iowa .......well unless you want to go get some OL and DL. LOL.

JState83 did hit a valid point. Those FCS powerhouses know we aint going to the playoffs and will not schedule us in the regular season either probably. Especially a home and home. You might get one of them to play you at their house which is why I said do a one and done but have another ready to be scheduled the following year. Kind of how we do with the FBS level schools. Only thing is, we aint going to get paid for going to another FCS school.

I understand, but if a one game deal is done, there has to be a payment. It makes no sense to just travel to another FCS school and not get paid for it.

True. You are right about that. I should have said, we will not get a big paycheck to go to another FCS school for a one and done. But we should get something if you do that.

Why would someone on the SAME level as you want and/or need to pay you for that trip? Doesn't make sense to me.

They would have to pay for a one game only deal. Ain't no school gonna travel to an opponent, without the guarantee of either a return game or money.

Especially since these FCS Playoff participating teams and conferences have their OOC schedules set for 3 and 4 years into the future.

We can't do that because, AGAIN, leadership decisions keep screwing everything up. How can we even dream of telling a school we will play them in a home and home in 2014 and 2015 when we keep going from a 7 game mandate to a play everybody and then 2 teams play again in December mandate.

Mess like that is just the start of what screws us up in this conference. The SWAC screws itself 99% of the time with the insane crap we do.

For some of us SWAC Schools, they will do it for the crowd, Certain SWAC Schools will pack their staduims, and other will bring a bigger crowd than they will normally get. But sometimes we need to be real, and instead of trying to start at a one of the top schools in those conferences, try to schedule some of the others.

Maybe it is time to make our conference available for a playoff invite. The conference President's should license the SWAC office to conduct a survey of conference fans to see the interest and also guage the financial benefits (directly or indirectly) from participating. Some traditional games would have to be moved, but in all honestly it wouldn't be the end of the world or the attendance. Especially if say the Bayou Classic winner was in the running for a playoff berth.

I think it's something we should look into... we (the conference) needs the added exposure. Plus ESPN is gonna eventually have the Bayou Classic anyway and would like having the entire conference participate in the playoffs. I know this is different from my past positions...but it may be time to take a different approach for the growth and sustaining of the conference.

That's what I'd think would be the right way to do it FCS to FCS.

But, if your name is Texas Southern University or Prairie View A&M University, you just travel on over to San Marcos @ their spot and get molly-whopped there by an FCS squad @ your level. Although PV gets a pass because TxSt is provisional FBS and is paying FBS $$$ for PV to come there and put it down on them in a few weeks. :D
