An Ironic Situation

Beans and MB why are you arguing with these KNEE-GROWS they dont want a playoff they dont want to play better competition they dont want to be the best in the Nation. Only thing that matters is the SWAC Championship Game and how many folks show up in their new outfit at the game...These KNEE-GROWS dont care that the SWAC is rank at the bottom of FCS year after year.....KNEE-GROWS dont care....

Southern has damm near reached rock bottom as far as financially and the SWAC aint helping their finances but they still happy....

Typical Thinking from a knee-grow say I can't instead of I can...

Reading the previous comments above why we can't play in a better conference proves my theory....:read:

Mh, c'mon mane, you're more intelligent than this. Stop playing the dumb role, cause you're doing a very bad job. You know what I'm saying. The SWAC isnt bringing in any more money than any other broke FCS conference. If they were, then yeah they would be helping you all build your stadium by you all using the funds that you're getting for being in this conference. But since this conference is broke, then you all have to go out and find the funds yourself. Financially, this conference isnt doing anything for our schools. But we can understand why some FBS schools jump ship on their conference to head to other conferences where more money is being made and shared. But we'll stay in this broke conference and allow it to take us down to Hades because of some faction of loyalty.

Show me any FCS conference that does that!!!

It is not that some of us have a problem trying to play the supposed "best". It just needs to make sense, and the current set up doesn't for us. Southern is at a low point now, but that ain't on the SWAC office, thats on us. What can the SWAC office do, fix the oil revenue and change the state constitution?

Maybe you can make the point better. How would the playoffs help our schools financially? How would they give us more exposure than we currently get?

Serious questions.

Don't you just LOVE how other people know how SOUTHERN feels on things?

I know... but I think "our" audience would be and not just local but nation wide. Somewhere in Chicago there's a family that sees Bama State's new facility, while watching your team host and win a FCS playoff game. They look at that environment does some research on your school and decides they would like to know more and possibly enroll. Replay that scene in countless African American homes... Exposure.

MB, we cool, but you got to answer this. How is this scenario any different from that fanily watching Bama State and anyone else in their new stadium in the regular season next year? If people were watching the FCS Playoffs like that, ESPN would have EACH one of those games on and none on NCAA.com or ESPN3.com or whatever.

I'm not a fan of the FCS playoffs either... but I'm talking of a scenario that involves an extra game. Since you're SU, let's use the jags. Let's say the jags have had a successful season and finished as conference championship. Let's add an extra layer of flavor and say that you won that conference championship by defeating Grambling in the Bayou Classic. Fan enthusiasm would no doubt be very high, right? SU then in turn secures a high seed and plays at home versus the MEAC, Southland, or Southern Conference foe. How would that impact your recruiting in Louisiana alone? Not just players but students? I think it would sway a lot more students that we're giving it credit for... I really do. It irks me to say this... I hate that the NCAA gets such a huge grab of the money. Not sure how Parking, Tailgating Space, program and concession is handled. However the buzz generated around SU and BR from an extra game... a playoff game would probably be quite loud.

Right. And even if J4L says that the game is broadcasted on ncaa.org, it STILL will bring in extra funds for SU's program as an extra game. Who wants to turn down extra funds?

Not sure at all, how much revenue you would make from the game... I seem to recall that even with the bid, the NCAA gets a portion of the gate. Not sure how that work...and that would be a sticking point with me. Sorry for not knowing the full details of that part of it. But regarding the exposure... any game on national television is good exposure. Now the key is to get in the playoffs and compete. These state salaries of our coaches are comparable to those of the men they are competing against. Since alums ain't having to pitch in an pay salaries, our donations can be used to fund other things like recruiting and academic centers and other infrastructure things related to the program.

I do agree the 9 game mandate needs to go. We can keep the SCG and make it work, but we need 4 OOC games. The problem is not the SWAC office on that, but our AD's who want do their jobs.

When we had 7 games, JSU chose to play D2 schools. Your AD is the problem. Not the playoffs or SCG. If you schedule 4 OOC games with these playoff schools, you make money and are better off than playing the playoffs. Common sense, but that ain't common around Sippi.

Didn't like it but what was the point.
We was not getting a invite to the playoffs no matter what.
That ship has sailed and now that it has, posters on this board want to yap about playoffs every other day. And I ask the question again from the other side of the room.

WHAT GOOD WOULD IT DO A PLAYOFF TEAM FROM A PLAYOFF CONFERENCE TO SCHEDULE A SWAC TEAM WHEN THEY CAN SCHEDULE ANOTHER PLAYOFF PARTICIPATING TEAM AND IMPROVE THEIR STOCK WITH A WIN AND NOT TOTALLY CRUSH THEIR PLAYOFF HOPES WITH A LOSS?

Ya'll act like these teams are sitting somewhere crying about not being able to play teams from a comference that don't even want to be part of the FCS structure. Be happy with where the SWAC has landed and live with it.

I think they would play... especially if the SWAC became playoff participants.

Your are right, back to the original topic, IMHO, I don't think the NCAA follows your logic. Basically, you are saying the NCAA should look at the conference teams that finish their season by the weekend before Thanksgiving and will not win the conference. I don't think they will do that. The NCAA is very clear about not picking conference champions, conferences do that.

So IMHO, the NCAA is not going to move until the conference picks the champion, they are not going to try to figure out who is not going to win it. That's not there place.

Lewis, that is incorrect. The NCAA looks at "teams available" when they pick the playoff teams. That is why SU and GSU and AlaState never go becasue they are n"not available" to participate.

However, here is an example to my point. The last time JSU went to the playoffs SU was the SWAC champ. JSU was 9-2 with a 7-1 conference record. I am not sure what SU's overall record was in 1997 but they had a 7-0 conference record the week before the playoffs began. JSU's season was OVER but SU and GSU still had to play. It didn't matter who won the Bayou Classic becasue even if SU lost and had a 7-1 confernece record, SU had the head to head advantage over us. Therefore, evn though a SWAC champ was not yet named, JSU knew were were not going to the Heritage Bowl and we were "available" for the playoffs. The same would occur this year if we didn't have ban. Even if we win ALL of our games, ASU would have to lose two games for us to get the SCG bid. Therefore, at 10-1, we would be available for the playoffs.

No matter how many scenerios, you want to come up with, at the end of the day, according to NCAA by-laws, we have 7 teams that can advance into the playoffs. END OF THAT DISCUSSION. Just ask any NCAA official for verification. We haven't had an automatic bid into the playoff for years, yet, we were still able to send teams.

As for teams not wanting to play us. I don't see how you can say that is true when we do play those teams. TxSo is playing Sam Houston State next year and teh only reason why JSU is not playing NW State is becasue we had to drop the contract after swithing back to 9 games. There are MANY examples of SWAC schools playing playoff eligible teams but when you only have two games and you waited until all of those teams were booked, this is what you get. Our ADs should always focus on stong out of conference schedules and we should go back to the 7 game format if we want teams in the playoffs. That is the only formut that will work (if we win the games).
