Alcorn State player shot, killed

LORMAN, Miss. (AP) -- Alcorn State football player JeKelcy Lee Johnson was killed when he was shot in the head during a campus confrontation.

A second student was wounded in the Monday night shootings and four people were being held for questioning, Sheriff Frank Davis said Tuesday.

Johnson, a 20-year-old freshman linebacker, died at Claiborne County Hospital, coroner J.W. Mallett said.

The confrontation happened at 11:30 p.m. outside Men's Tower.

"We had four guys come on campus from Natchez," Davis said. "They made some statements to a young lady that she didn't like, and two students came to her rescue and were shot. JeKelcy Johnson was killed."

The other student, Roddel Devoual, 20, was shot in the side, the sheriff said. He was in stable condition Tuesday at the University of Mississippi Medical Center in Jackson, hospital officials said.

The four people being held were "joyriding" on the campus and were not students, Alcorn State spokesman Ralph Payne said.

"One of them, I understand, threw a bottle and it injured a female student," Payne said. "That's when JeKelcy got involved and, tragically, was shot."

Davis said his office is still investigating.

"We'll be talking to the district attorney about charges," he said.

The student hit by the bottle apparently was taken to Claiborne County Hospital, but there was no record of her requiring hospitalization.

My prayers are with this young man's family...
May with God rest your soul.

Oh my God, how tragic! My prayers for the comforting ministry of the Holy Spirit are extended to his family and the Alcorn family.

This is so sad. We want our campuses to be a place for the community and allow free access so that even those not enrolled can experience the beauty of higher learning (even if only through observation). Then you have those twisted individuals who have thrown their lives away and then like animals take the lives of others.

I pray for the soul of this poor your man and for his family. I pray for the recovery and well being of the other injured victim, the young lady and both of their families. I even pray for the soul of those the performed this cruel act. I hope that God forgives them and grants them mercy and that they come to accept Christ.

But, I also hope that they be punished to the fullest extent of the law! I believe in forgiveness...but the forgiveness comes from God. They must be punished by man for what they did.

Man, this gives the locals a bad name. This is so messed up. I hope they charge the fool who did this with first degree murder and give him the death penalty.

Just speechless...

I'm so saddened to hear this. So young. All of that potential taken @ the hands of another or several.

Sending up prayers for the victims, their families. :(

I just saw the news flash of this on ESPN News...this is very unfortunate...especially given that he was coming to the aid of another...That's a HERO!!

May God be with the entire Braves family!!

:( :( :(

My sympathy to his family and friends. Here is a young man doing the right thing and struck down by stupidity.

:( :( :( :( :( :( :( :( :( :( :( :( :( :( :( :( :( :( :(

Shinitz like this just pisses me the L off!!!Young Brotha looses his life over some dumb shinitz!!!:redhot:

A senseless death. Over some bullsh_t. I do believe in the death penalty. These 4 guys don't value life. So I say take it away from them.

When will these knuckleheads learn. A life taken and another injured over pure stupidity.

My thoughts and prayers are with both families and the ASU family.

You best believe if a individual or individuals act ignorant, then you should automatically believe or assume that a gun or weapon is somewhere around. Stay safe and call the police. Get a tag number or a possible description of the individuals involved. I know that this young man tried to help and my heart goes out to him and his family, but a lesson is to be learned in this matter for all of us, call the police before you act or if you have to confront a person, try to have protection of your own.

A serious liability at Alcorn, for those who may not know, is that our so-called "security guards" are extremely inadequate - they have been known to turn (run) in the other direction instead of responding to a situation. And from what I've heard so far, "security" was at the scene when this happened. And it may have been 45 minutes to an hour before an ambulance arrived at the Tower - Alcornites, correct me if I'm wrong....

This is really sad.All we can do is pray that things like this does not happen.

This is the reason I do not have a problem with the security checks at all of ASU's sporting events.I have heard some people in the past complain about it,but you are always going to have some fool in a crowd.Usually it is an outsider that cause the problem.

What is this world coming to? This is truly sad. We need to pray for the safety of all students at HCBU. This P's, me off to the max. Another black on black crime.

What a waste. I pray for the young man's family. He came to college to get an education and improve himself. I'll bet the thugs who did this did not even finish high school. If and when they are convicted and put in prison, they will be complaining about not having had an opportunity to get an education.

This is so sad....

This is a sad day on the yard. I was right outside where it happened about 10 minutes earlier. I came back in to finish up some work. The next thing I know, I hear gunshots outside.
I thought that somebody was just shooting in the air. So I looked out the window to see what was going. I saw a bunch of people running away and I knew that something was wrong.
I went outside and saw the guy on the ground. I didn't know what was going on. I had to come back to my room and call my parents and tell them that I love them. I can't believe that I was out there 10 minutes before it happened!!
The campus is really quiet now. A lot of people went home after it happened. I was contemplating going home, myself but I decided not to.
I hope that this never happens again!!!!!

I love you all!!!! You are my second family!!
