Luke passes for 177 yards; Dorman throws for 93

Kelcy Luke will be Alabama A&M's starting quarterback when the Bulldogs visit Tennessee State on Sept. 3, but look for backup Harold Dorman to get some playing time as well.

Luke, a redshirt sophomore, and Dorman, a redshirt freshman, were highly productive Saturday night in A&M's second preseason scrimmage at Louis Crews Stadium.

Unofficially, Luke completed 15-of-21 passes for 177 yards and three touchdowns and also rushed for 60 yards on nine carries and another score. Meanwhile, Dorman was 6-of-8 for 93 yards and a touchdown and rushed for 68 yards on only two carries, including a dazzling 63-yard touchdown jaunt.

"I'm just competing. That's all I can do," Dorman said after the scrimmage. "I can't settle for the second spot."

With just under two weeks left before the season opener, Dorman hedged when asked he asked if thought the job had been decided or if he had enough time to overtake Luke.

"That's up to Coach Jones," he said. "I'm just going to compete. I can't make the decision who starts and who doesn't. My job is to impress upon Coach Jones that I can play and help this team win football games. If I have to do something else, so be it."

Jones has said he expects Luke and Dorman to play in the season opener. He didn't back off of that Saturday night.

"I expect both of them will play meaningful minutes," Jones said.

Luke played the first half Saturday night, while Dorman played the second half.

Luke played eight possessions, leading the first offense to five touchdowns and a field goal.

"Tonight was a good indication of what we can do," Luke said. "We've been working hard and it's paying off because we're getting better."

Hampered with an ankle injury throughout training camp last year, Luke has had no problems through the first three weeks of practice.

"I'm very happy," he said. "Hopefully, I can stay healthy all year long."

If that happens, Jones said the Bulldogs will be tough to beat.

"Kelcy came to camp in great shape," he said. "He has a strong hold as the starting quarterback and he's not letting it go."

Dorman played only four possessions and led his team to four touchdowns, including the 63-yard run.

"That's what he can do," Jones said.

Ta'Mar Scott led all rushers with 92 yards on five carries and a touchdown. D.J. Flowers, a transfer from Akron, had 67 yards on three carries, including a 49-yard touchdown, while Nic Luke rushed for 48 yards on four carries and scored a touchdown.

Tim Robinson led all receivers with seven catches for 68 yards and a touchdown. Kevin Francis had three catches for 108 yards and two touchdowns, including a 70-yarder from Kelcy Luke.

"Our receivers have made plays throughout training camp," Jones said. "I hope it continues."

Freshman fullback Kevin McCants caught a 22-yard touchdown pass from Dorman.

Defensively, the Bulldogs forced six turnovers and had that many sacks or more.

Jonathan McConico, Bobby McClain, Jimmy Richardson and Marius Bonner recorded interceptions, while inside linebacker Johnny Baldwin and tackle Fred Solomon had fumble recoveries.

"They had a lot of pressure on the quarterback," Jones said.

So your two QB's were 21-29 for 270 yards and 4 passing TD. Along with 11 carries for 128 yards and 2 rusing TD's. Wasn't aamu DB's Bragging about..... nevermind. ICON Grambling by 34.

Those are first team defensive players.... they didnt give up a touchdown, and had plenty of sacks and interceptions.

So what offensive team did the 1st team defense play against?

final scrimmage before game preparations for TSU.... first and second team offense and 1st team defense were on the same team... going against third team offense and 2nd and 3rd team defense.

 Huh! What sense does that make? :shame:

Why wouldn't you just match up 1st team offense against 1st team defense, etc.?

Re: Both QBs shine in A&M scrimmage

other teams do that also, that isn't a novel concept. This basically says put pressure on the qb's and they blow up.

Has jsu ever lost a player before the season, due to an unnecessary injury during scrimmages? I think that may have been what our coach was trying to avoid. Luke will not be injured in practice. If he gets hurt it will be in an actual game and not in the preseason, again. But, even if he gets hurt, we have one dangerous back up in Dorman.

Dorman's ability to scramble, buy time for the recievers, or just tuck it and run are just ridiculous. Luke will scramble, also. But, Dorman just has this extra something that doesn't give you the jitters when you see him tuck the ball. With more time, he could probably move ahead of Luke. But right now, Luke has the full grasp of what is needed and how the offense will be operated.

This won't be the same offense. :swink:

we been in camp 3 weeks and this is our 3rd and last scrimmage... first and second scrimmage you looking for players... the last scrimmage you already have depth charge established and you are working on executing a game plan

Yeah, we actually have lost some players to freak injuries, but I think that happens across the board when your trying to get players into shape and you are looking for quality backups, practice experience, etc.

All in all, I asked that because of the quality of A&M's defense. I would rather gauge my players ability against the "best" competition in practice to see if they are mentally prepared and how they react against them. Mind you, the 2nd and 3rd string defense that your offense is facing in practice will be anything remotely seen to that of the TN State team you'll play in just 2 weeks.

This is just my opinion, but I'd rather face my offense against one of the top rated defenses in the SWAC every day to see now they respond! :|

Yeah, but our starting defense gets too wound up and forget that they aren't supposed to try and tear folks heads off until the game. Townes gets in their butts too hard for them to be playing against our first string that hard. We are avoiding that all together this year. That's how Luke got hurt last year and Robinson the year before that and Gunn Before that, and Bellamy during the season. We aren't taking any chances.

Okay.....well in that aspect I see what you're saying!

So the first team offense was playing against the 3rd string defense. And the 1st team defense was playing against the 3rd string offense. So was the 2nd team offense and the 2nd team defense playing each other. Did both quarterbacks play with just the first team or did they play with the 2nd and 3rd team.?

Both quarterbacks didnt run with the first string offense.... LUke ran with the first string offense and Dorman ran with the 2nd team offense..... there werent really any subs in between them.... We will be aight with either one of them...

Luke was ranked the 17th ranked dual threat qb in the nation his senior year (2 years ago) and was offered a scholarship by every major school in the south before signing with Auburn. After they changed their offense to a pocket style passing, he decided to leave...

Dorman was the top qb in the DC/MD area his senior season after throwing for 2800 yards. Both of them are TEN times better than Johnny Keith.

Its STILL happening now.... Joes went THE HELL OFF on somebody during the scrimmage for hitting Luke hard... thats a bad habbit our defense has... they dont realize they arent suppose to hit the qb... they try to kill the qbs even when they have the red jerseys on. Thats how Luke got messed up during training camp last year and it affected him the entire year last year. The game Saturday if you got 2 hands on the qb it was considered a down or a sack (in the backfield).... Both Luke and Dorman would have ran for much more yeards if they didnt have that rule in the scrimmage.

JOHNNY KEITH lol...... He went from starter last year to 3rd team qb this year.

orman was the top qb in the DC/MD area his senior season after throwing for 2800 yards.

I tried to tell y'all about the Dorman kid this past spring......The kid is a real talent...

This kid went from freshman star to senior who's that? I kinda wanted him to move to fullback. He has the body for it, but I guess you have to keep him in the back up position since we are loaded in the backfield.

I'm still trying to figure out how he started throwing all those interceptions. I wonder if he needs glasses and no one has thought to get him tested?

He put on some weight is all I can say. But he was always a big kid in my opinion. He just got bigger last year than I had ever seen him and from what I heard. He was even bigger in the spring.

Keith is BIG (muscalur big)....he has the biggest arms (guns) on the team.... his arms are so big he doesnt even look right in street clothes because his arms can barely fit in a polo type shirt, so it makes the arms on all of shirts look supertight. Keith is about 230 or 240 with no body fat.

That what happens when you have a team of Props. They just learned how to count to ten. They don't learn colors until senior year.

*snicker*

carry on

team full of props??? Once again for the slow.... we recruited props this year BECAUSE we didnt have too many scholarships to give because we hardly had any seniors on the team last year.

Just make sure you tell those Tiger freshmen to BE READY in two weeks :)
