Luke passes for 177 yards; Dorman throws for 93
Kelcy Luke will be Alabama A&M's starting quarterback when the Bulldogs visit Tennessee State on Sept. 3, but look for backup Harold Dorman to get some playing time as well.
Luke, a redshirt sophomore, and Dorman, a redshirt freshman, were highly productive Saturday night in A&M's second preseason scrimmage at Louis Crews Stadium.
Unofficially, Luke completed 15-of-21 passes for 177 yards and three touchdowns and also rushed for 60 yards on nine carries and another score. Meanwhile, Dorman was 6-of-8 for 93 yards and a touchdown and rushed for 68 yards on only two carries, including a dazzling 63-yard touchdown jaunt.
"I'm just competing. That's all I can do," Dorman said after the scrimmage. "I can't settle for the second spot."
With just under two weeks left before the season opener, Dorman hedged when asked he asked if thought the job had been decided or if he had enough time to overtake Luke.
"That's up to Coach Jones," he said. "I'm just going to compete. I can't make the decision who starts and who doesn't. My job is to impress upon Coach Jones that I can play and help this team win football games. If I have to do something else, so be it."
Jones has said he expects Luke and Dorman to play in the season opener. He didn't back off of that Saturday night.
"I expect both of them will play meaningful minutes," Jones said.
Luke played the first half Saturday night, while Dorman played the second half.
Luke played eight possessions, leading the first offense to five touchdowns and a field goal.
"Tonight was a good indication of what we can do," Luke said. "We've been working hard and it's paying off because we're getting better."
Hampered with an ankle injury throughout training camp last year, Luke has had no problems through the first three weeks of practice.
"I'm very happy," he said. "Hopefully, I can stay healthy all year long."
If that happens, Jones said the Bulldogs will be tough to beat.
"Kelcy came to camp in great shape," he said. "He has a strong hold as the starting quarterback and he's not letting it go."
Dorman played only four possessions and led his team to four touchdowns, including the 63-yard run.
"That's what he can do," Jones said.
Ta'Mar Scott led all rushers with 92 yards on five carries and a touchdown. D.J. Flowers, a transfer from Akron, had 67 yards on three carries, including a 49-yard touchdown, while Nic Luke rushed for 48 yards on four carries and scored a touchdown.
Tim Robinson led all receivers with seven catches for 68 yards and a touchdown. Kevin Francis had three catches for 108 yards and two touchdowns, including a 70-yarder from Kelcy Luke.
"Our receivers have made plays throughout training camp," Jones said. "I hope it continues."
Freshman fullback Kevin McCants caught a 22-yard touchdown pass from Dorman.
Defensively, the Bulldogs forced six turnovers and had that many sacks or more.
Jonathan McConico, Bobby McClain, Jimmy Richardson and Marius Bonner recorded interceptions, while inside linebacker Johnny Baldwin and tackle Fred Solomon had fumble recoveries.
"They had a lot of pressure on the quarterback," Jones said.
