After months of talks, Alabama A&M, Alabama Sports Council sign four-year agreement on Magic City Classic

It took almost a year and at times threatened the future of the storied HBCU rivalry, but this week a recalcitrant Alabama A&M reached an accord with the Alabama Sports Council to participate in the event through 2026.

After nearly a year of contentious negotiations, and recent weeks when A&M’s reluctance to sign a contract with the Alabama Sports Council (ASC), the non-profit entity that oversees production of the event, appeared to put the Classic in jeopardy, the two parties have signed a four-year agreement that runs through 2026.

The contract, signed copies of which were obtained by AL.com, essentially duplicates the agreement signed by Alabama State in April. It guarantees A&M $1 million in 2024 and 2026 when the Bulldogs are designated as the home team, and $300,000 in 2023 and 2025 when they are visitors. (ASU’s agreement slips those figures and years.)

Combined with the $500,000 annually each institution will also receive from the City of Birmingham, per contracts signed earlier this year, the average annual payout for each school over the four years will be $1.15 million, the highest guarantee among any HBCU football event, according to Perren King, Executive Director of the Classic.

“The guarantee is higher than some FBS bowl game payouts,” King said. “We applaud the presidents for being extremely thoughtful in achieving the best outcome for their constituencies.”

The A&M agreement is essentially the same proposal presented to it on Friday, September 15, with an additional $200,000 provided to the school in 2023 (up from $100,000), some new provisions (such as ASC agreeing to meet with A&M officials “four times each year to discuss planning for” the Classic), and a few tweaks in legal language.

The Alabama State agreement with ASC is being slightly revised so terms in each contract are identical.
 
After the four years, it might be a good idea to move the game to AAMU when they are the home team and keep it in Birmingham when ASU is the home team. AAMU can get the control and revenue they expect and ASU can get 3 million dollars. Its a win - win for all.

The contract and the payout to the Alabama Sports Council (ASC) is/was the issue. That issue will remain and has to be resolved in 4 years.

AL.com absorbed the B’ham News, Huntsville Times and the Mobile Press Register. Conservative white Alabamaians despise the news group and consider them too liberal in their reporting.

Its not suppose to be like that...you got racist white people in this state making big money off the MCC..sitting up with they feet up laughing about it puffing a cigar sipping old whiskey...it's political bullshit! We know ASU & Ross aint gonna stand up to fight the political bs money grab since they're are located in Montgomery and tied into the political bullshit too!

On a sidenote I'm glad the whole world knows them white peepas down in Montgomery still owe Alabama A&M University over 500 million dollars..pay up lol

you're right... it shouldn't be like that. It wasn't until I heard josh moon on his podcast talking about how he knew ross would be good at bama state cause he could navigate the statehouse and he mentioned there are rumblings about a&m's president and that he might not be long for the job that I began to understand how this thing works.

Wims will be here... the alumni here like him for the most part! Josh Moon just likes to keep up shit with the state HBCUs but Normal aint Montgomery..Moon been trying to stir up négative bullshit since the 90s with A&M...Moon tried it with Hugine when he started at A&M but Hugine was lawyered up against all the political bs tactics that come out of Montgomery.

AAMU's move will be based on the contractual agreement of meeting with Gene Hallman and the ASC 4 times a year. Careful monitoring of the finances and input into planning of the classic will be vital after 4 years. Getting ASC to agree to meet 4 times a year was crucial. A&M and State can both come to the table to do what is best for their institutions after a 4 year study. Based on a conversation during homecoming, the city of Huntsville is anxious to bring the game to normal, Alabama.

Not sure what the economic impact was on the city of Madison and Huntsville during Homecoming 2023. However, it would be ridiculous with Bama State coming to town.. in addition, sponsorships...

Every time someone suggests moving to the respective campuses, the scary folks come out the woodworks screaming "the cities can't handle the traffic letting the schools continue to get pimped in the name of " tradition "

Preach! Nothing against Alcorn, Auburn & Alabama; however, they moved for a reason. After a 4 year study A&M and State should do what is best. If the best option is to remain in B'ham or move to their own city. Meeting 4 times a year is vital.......
 
Tuscaloosa made a major investment in infrastructure TO GET THE IRON BOWL TO MOVE. Tuscaloosa is still investing and building hotels for 5 home games a year and the Iron Bowl every other year. The Mayor is in full support of whatever UA wants. The entire city is invested in UA. You will not drive 1/2 a mile in Tuscaloosa without something UA. I hear a lot of talk about what Huntsville wants to do, but I've SEEN what Tuscaloosa has done and is doing. The two are not the same.
