A&M wants to go to I-AA Playoffs

TP,

As I understand it, once there is a three-way tie, the two-way tie breaker (head-to-head) is eliminated.

When you think about it, thats the way it should be.
Start with the rules for three-way tie and finish with them. You'll create mass confusion by switching the rules in the middle of the tie.

Most of the time when there's a three-way tie, once a team is eliminated with the 3-team tiebreakers, the two remaining teams revert back to the 2-team tiebreakers, i.e. head-to-head.

actually Dahill,
that would give Alcorn 2 losses in the East (to Bama State and JSU)

my bad.... you are correct.... all of this is too confusing for me.... the article from the swac office said aamu doesnt have a chance, coach jones says aamu doesnt have a chance, so that is what I am goin with.

PNeck,

A three-way tie is a three-way tie.

Period.

Eliminating ONE of the teams in the three-way tie DOES NOT resolve the three-way tie.

The three-way tie can only be resolved by eliminating TWO of the teams, thus leaving one. And, it must be resolved using only one of the rules of the tie-breaker, not a combination of two or more of the tie-breaker rules as would be the case in your example.

Sometimes this is what happens. We need to get the rulebook on this because I am sure that there is a precedent where this has happened and AAMU could use it if the SWAC office does not clarify it. I always THOUGHT that is reverted back to head to head but I could be wrong.

This is what the SWAC office was putting out in the last few weeks.

A&M would like playoff bid

Jones says win Saturday may make case for Bulldogs

"If we can beat Arkansas-Pine Bluff, maybe the NCAA Division I-AA playoff committee will take a good look at us," Jones said Sunday night. "We're a good football team."

Jones could make a strong case.

If the Bulldogs were to beat the Golden Lions Saturday afternoon in the season finale at Louis Crews Stadium, A&M would finish the season 8-4. It would be the first time since the 1962-63 seasons that the Bulldogs have posted back-to-back eight-win seasons.

Tune into ESPN News at 1pm Eastern this Sunday for the official announcement of the 2003 I-AA playoff field.
