A&M would like playoff bid

Jones says win Saturday may make case for Bulldogs

A day after watching his team's Southwestern Athletic Conference championship game hopes go up in smoke, Alabama A&M coach Anthony Jones came up with an even bigger goal for the Bulldogs to reach.

"If we can beat Arkansas-Pine Bluff, maybe the NCAA Division I-AA playoff committee will take a good look at us," Jones said Sunday night. "We're a good football team."

Jones could make a strong case.

If the Bulldogs were to beat the Golden Lions Saturday afternoon in the season finale at Louis Crews Stadium, A&M would finish the season 8-4. It would be the first time since the 1962-63 seasons that the Bulldogs have posted back-to-back eight-win seasons.

They would have finished the season having won seven of their last nine games. Three of the team's four losses would have come against ranked teams - Jacksonville State, Grambling and Southern - and the other one against one of the hottest teams in the league on the road.

"We have an exciting football team that has played well all year long," Jones said. "If we can win Saturday, we deserve some recognition."

A&M would have gotten plenty of it had it beaten Alcorn State last Saturday.

"We stubbed our toe," Jones said. "When you have an opportunity and you don't get it done, you can't blame nobody but yourself. We had opportunities."

Alcorn State's win leaves the door open for Alabama State to represent the Eastern Division in the title game. If the Hornets can beat Texas Southern on Saturday night, they will advance to the title game. Should the Hornets lose and Alcorn State beats Jackson State, the Braves would win the Eastern Division and advance to the championship.

Should Alabama State and Alcorn State both lose, it would create a three-way tie for the division lead. With that, Alabama State would advance to the chamionship game based on points.

Alabama State beat Alcorn State by 28 points, Alcorn State beat A&M by five points and A&M beat Alabama State by three points.

"I wanted our kids so badly to be successful," Jones said. "A second straight bid to the championship game wouldhave been nice."

How are you going to collectively turn up your noses the playoffs as a conference on one hand, but then turn around beg the playoff committee to include you in the playoffs after you were not good enough to make it to the SCG?

The playoff committee aint cutting the SWAC any slack, and I dont blame them. Plus, 4 losses is too many, unless 1 or 2 of them come against 1-A opponents.

Yes, 4 losses is too many for any team to receive one of the 8 at-large bids.

&

Fiyah,

I disagree about the 4 losses statements. Remember 4 losses in a 12 game season is similar to 3 losses in a 11 game season.

I would suggest that the timing of the loss will hurt more than anything, as well as zero real serious quality wins, and extremely non ranking in the top 25 Division I AA Polls to gain enough entrance from the NCAA Division I AA committee to jump over several 8-3 or 8-4 will higher rankings in polls and better late season winning streaks. In my opinion, the home opening lost to Jacksonville State really seals the deal.

It is nice to read that their are some options in terms of play-offs for our programs like Alabama A & M and Alcorn State (even Jackson State if they where winning), if Alabama State is the conference representative for the SWAC Championship.

i.e.

http://www.usatoday.com/sports/college/football/iaapoll.htm

Remember currently there are 3 (i.e. Penn, Grambling, & Southern) teams ranked in the top 16 that are not eligible for the NCAA Division I AA Play-offs.

17. NORTHRN ARIZONA (8-3) 383 18
18. VILLANOVA (7-3) 302 13
19. JACKSONVILLE ST (7-3) 223 20
20. NORTHERN COLO (8-2) 185 25
21. NORTHEASTERN (7-4) 161 22
22. MAINE (6-4) 127 NR
23. GA SOUTHERN (7-4) 110 23
24. IDAHO ST (7-4) 108 NR
25. FORDHAM (8-3) 83 19

Dropped Out: No. 21 CAL POLY, No. 24 ALABAMA A&M

Others Receiving Votes: LEHIGH 77, GARDNER-WEBB 64,
APPALACHIAN ST 44, SFA 41, WEBER ST 36, CAL POLY 18, HAMPTON 14, JACKSONVILLE FL 7, ALABAMA A&M 7, MONTANA ST 6, SO CAROLINA ST 6, FURMAN 4, YALE 3, JAMES MADISON 2,
NORTHWESTERN ST 1, HARVARD 1.

If two Eastern Division teams of the SWAC, outside of Alabama State, ever becomes as dominant for any period of time similar to Grambling State and Southern are now, then the loser of the game between the two teams in the SWAC Eastern Division would gain a bid to the NCAA Division I AA Play-offs.

I am afraid that I may have to cosign this.

Then again maybe more teams will speak up like Alabama A&M in future seasons.

:smh:

You sure wont get any recognition by begging your way into the playoffs. I guess he feels that being a possible 8-4 or 7-5 isnt successful.

No smack intended but they can always leave the SWAC and join the MEAC I'm more than positive they'd be more than happy to take them.

I know this is the sports board but some of you all have No reading and Comprehension skills at all. This man is the head coach of his team he is not begging anyone. He just stated a case for his team. I swear some of you are just backwards!!!!

And running to the papers for the NCAA to read or see is begging in my opinion. He hasnt done anything worthy of recognition than any other playoff bound team that is not from the SWAC with a better record.

I cant blame the man for lobbying. Albeit, it is unrealistic considering that there are only 8 at large spots and his team is not in the numbers mix.

EXACTLY....... Jones know that AAMU isnt going to receive a big to the playoffs... he is basically just trying to get the schools name out there... Just like when AD Martin put in a big to host the SWAC champsionship football game at Lewis Crews... he knew that game was never going to be at Lewis Crews, but it dont hurt to have the name out there.

Well, I don't agree with the writer saying "their swac championship hopes went up in smoke"... lol. Don't worry AAMU....JSU and TSU will send you to Birmingham Saturday. ;)

nope we dont even own the tie breaker... If both schools lose Bama St still goes. They beat Alcorn by more points than Alcorn beat AAMU, and by more points than AAMU beat ASU.

NOISE TALKA,

You haven't been paying attention, my friend.

A&M has been ELIMINATED from the SCG.

That's right, eliminated.

There is a thread on this board that explains it, if you care to check it out.

lol. I wasn't sure on the point spread of those games.....oh well. Good luck on the playoff thing. lol. We're still kickin Alcorn's arse though. lol.

Exactly!! Some people don't have business sense. If you want your product out there market it. It might not work but you don't lose anything by trying!!!!

Point spread is not the tie breaker behind head to head competition. It's the record in the EAST. If TxSo and JSU wins, AAMU goes to Bham.

even Texas SO and JSU wins... then Alcorn, AAMU and Bama St all will have one EAST loss... after that is goes to point spread. AAMU beat Bama St by 3, Alcorn beat AAMU by 5 and Bama St beat ALcorn but 30 something.
