A day after watching his team's Southwestern Athletic Conference championship game hopes go up in smoke, Alabama A&M coach Anthony Jones came up with an even bigger goal for the Bulldogs to reach.
"If we can beat Arkansas-Pine Bluff, maybe the NCAA Division I-AA playoff committee will take a good look at us," Jones said Sunday night. "We're a good football team."
Jones could make a strong case.
If the Bulldogs were to beat the Golden Lions Saturday afternoon in the season finale at Louis Crews Stadium, A&M would finish the season 8-4. It would be the first time since the 1962-63 seasons that the Bulldogs have posted back-to-back eight-win seasons.
They would have finished the season having won seven of their last nine games. Three of the team's four losses would have come against ranked teams - Jacksonville State, Grambling and Southern - and the other one against one of the hottest teams in the league on the road.
"We have an exciting football team that has played well all year long," Jones said. "If we can win Saturday, we deserve some recognition."
A&M would have gotten plenty of it had it beaten Alcorn State last Saturday.
"We stubbed our toe," Jones said. "When you have an opportunity and you don't get it done, you can't blame nobody but yourself. We had opportunities."
Alcorn State's win leaves the door open for Alabama State to represent the Eastern Division in the title game. If the Hornets can beat Texas Southern on Saturday night, they will advance to the title game. Should the Hornets lose and Alcorn State beats Jackson State, the Braves would win the Eastern Division and advance to the championship.
Should Alabama State and Alcorn State both lose, it would create a three-way tie for the division lead. With that, Alabama State would advance to the chamionship game based on points.
Alabama State beat Alcorn State by 28 points, Alcorn State beat A&M by five points and A&M beat Alabama State by three points.
"I wanted our kids so badly to be successful," Jones said. "A second straight bid to the championship game wouldhave been nice."
