I wonder now if people are calling for the Gardens to be closed permanently becuase of this.

The blame is totally on the adult(RIP) who didn't adhere to the sign and set an example to the kids by following the rules.

As beautiful as they are without them, I am sure that you will soon see rails and gates incorporated into the water gardens. I took my family there and I was holding my kid?s hands tight as hell. That main pool scared the $h!t out of me, I could just picture one of my kids in there.

Hopefully they'll put a guard rail around it so other dumb arses won't bypass the DO NOT SWIM signs and try to swim anyway. Maybe the Dallas zoo will post up larger signs saying DO NOT TEASE THE ANIMALS so other dumb arses won't get attacked by gorillas. Some stuff can clearly be avoided. If the sign says no swimming...I digress.

I don't know what the intent was, however it is possible that the children were dressed to go into the hotel's pool and didn't change clothing before going to the garden. The picture shown above looks a bit intimidating, and I question if it was not more a slip than a jump. At any rate, if it was truly an accident or an intent to swim while disregarding the signs, it was a terrible tragedy. I know this is a racist statement, but, I just can't visualize a Black, or a Black Bapitst throwing caution to the wind and jumping in a pool of swirling water to swim.

Well, not only were they ALL black, they had been at their hotel for several days, before going to the fountain, and the hotel's pool has been closed for weeks. So they knew they couldn't swim in the hotel pool. So they went LOOKING for an alternative swimming hole, which turned out to be the Water Gardens.... :|

For those that have never been there that big pool is no joke. I can't see any adult allowing any age child to play in there. They may have had intention to swim (play) at the water Gardens but once they got there I know that center pool made them rethink. Look the pictures; there is no way to get out of there without assistance. There is at least a 7 to 8 foot drop before you hit the water.

This had to be an accident; No one with a pulse would get in there on purpose
 
19,000 gallons of water are pumped through that thing. So the force of the water and the suction at the bottom of the pool create a force that makes it impossible for anyone to get out of it.
 
They showed this on the news in Atlanta last night. Can anybody tell me why the "No Swimming" signs are about the same color as the steps? I saw that and I had to look twice to see it. They should have made those signs a lot more visible than how they look now.

I have read all of your posts on this subject and I think you are a bit heavy-handed.

Don't think that they went there for a NY minute to swim. They went there to be cool and frolic in the water with their swimsuits on like people do at thousands of public fountains around the world ever summer. They wanted to get wet, not swim. The girl slipped and the rest is history.

Now, what we might never know is what instructions were given to the children and why the father was not in place to insure that the girl did not get that close.

Finally, a pastor (and I am one) should never tell his congregation that such an act was stupid. It was an accident. It was avoidable. But, it was not stupid. Our responsibility is to comfort them that mourn and to help them to learn from the situation. Berating the dead helps no one.

I agree with everything stated here. I think the wording of the article is misleading as it relates to the hotel pool being closed and the family choosing another activitiy to do. My heart goes out to this famil though. Sad.
 
Based on the description in this news story, that place sounds too dangerous to not have some type of security fence. I wouldn't be surprised if there haven't been other drownings there from falls, just not as many in one instance.

That's what I thought. We can only go by what was reported. Who leaves the hotel to swim?...obviously they did. We see no reports of fences, who is to say they saw the "No Swimming" signs. No fence, the little child gets to close and slips...no further intentions to swim regardless of the signs...the child slipped, regardless of the fact that there was an adult present. Accidents happen...obviously it was their appointed time to leave this earth or they would have still been here.

 
I wasn't present when the drownings occurred, but I have been to the gardens on several occasions, and not once have I seen people there in swimsuits. I've never seen unsupervised children slip into the big pool (or any pool). To that end, I've never seen anyone slip into any of the pools, ever.

Accidents DO happen, but an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure.

Antroy, there are other no swimming signs that are more clearly visible than the ones they showed on television. I've always thought there should be some kind of fence or something around the big pool, but from reading about the gardens in the past (and re-reading them recently), accesibility was the intent of the architect. Until this week, I believe there has only been one other death at the gardens. I think.

Truly sad.
They also may not have known what the water gardens were from the start. They may have thought that is was a water park of some sorts (Water World with slides and boat rides and the like) They also may have had other plans after they visited the gardens. I am inclinded to believe that story.

Very unfortunate. But if some of these people were from the North/midwest they routinely go swimming/wading in fountain pools. It happens here in KC all the time that kids and adults swim in the fountains no matter how may signs you post. They just do it because usually swimming pools are not nearby and accessible. It's pretty shameful.

Also with the pumps, the kids/adults never had a chance.

My heart really goes out to the families/friends involved.

One has to make a concerted effort to enter the pool to get to those lower levels. I've taken my young crew there on numerous occasions along w/ this one that reminds me of it in Dallas near reunion tower. I don't see how that could've been construed as a "water park" though. City folk wading in a public fountain would liken itself to us country folk jumping in some sort of alligator infested lake I guess. :( Sad. Truly sad.

The families of four Chicago tourists who drowned at Fort Worth Water Gardens have filed a lawsuit, claiming the city showed "utter indifference" to the safety of visitors, especially children.​

The lawsuit doesn't set a damage amount, but it asks for more than $1 million on each of 72 counts, the Fort Worth Star-Telegram reported.​

Doc, anything is possible with the court system today. I hate the family had such a tragic loss, but I also don't think they should be given millions of dollars because the family did not obey the posted warning signs.
