Day 11 of the 2019 US Open finds four of the best in women’s tennis still standing, as each continues her quest to stand alone. At the start of this event, 128 names filled the lines of the women’s draw; tonight, the deal is two pair. Four women—some familiar, others less so—have battled their way through to the semifinals of this tournament and now stand two matches removed from tennis’ toughest title. One of tonight’s semifinals pits Serena Williams against Elina Svitolina; the other brings together Belinda Bencic and Bianca Andreescu. Four top talents, one common goal: Each needs to be semi-tough.

This event has been a fortnightmare for the majority of the top seeds on the women’s side, as eight of the Top 10 have been ousted to this point. Indeed, not since The Grapes of Wrath have so many seeds been scattered to the wind. Defending US Open champ and top seed Naomi Osaka lost in Round 4. Reigning French Open champ and second seed Ashleigh Barty exited in the same round, as did third-seeded Karolina Pliskova. The tournament’s No. 4 seed, Wimbledon champ Simona Halep, fared even less well, forced from Flushing in Round 2.

The only two of the Top 10 who’ve survived this tournament’s first five rounds will go head-to-head tonight in its sixth, as No. 5 Svitolina takes on No. 8 Williams.

Serena Williams beats Elina Svitolina, advances to 10th US Open final

WHAT HAPPENED: Serena Williams earned a her 10th trip to the US Open women’s singles final with a 6-3, 6-1 victory over No. 5 Elina Svitolina Thursday night in Arthur Ashe Stadium. The win gives Williams another chance to capture her 24th career Grand Slam women’s singles title, which would tie Margaret Court’s all-time record.

The match wasn’t nearly as easy as Williams’ 44-minute quarterfinals win over Qiang Wang. When this match hit the 44-minute mark, the first set had just ended. The first two games alone lasted 16 minutes. Svitolina had her chances, but Williams fought off six break points. Once Williams closed out the first set, she made quick work of the second to win her 101st career match victory at the US Open, tying Chris Evert's all-time record.

Bianca Andreescu makes history by reaching the 2019 US Open final .

WHAT HAPPENED: As pressure mounts and the target on Bianca Andreescu's back grows larger with each consecutive win, one would think the 19-year-old Canadian would start to show some cracks in her armor.

Think again.

Andreescu powered past Switzerland's Belinda Bencic and into her her maiden Grand Slam final with yet another electrifying performance on Thursday night in Arthur Ashe Stadium, 7-6, 7-5.

Make it 13 consecutive victories in a row for Andreescu—and the winning streak doesn't even begin to tell the story of the Canadian's remarkable rise in 2019. Ranked well outside the Top 150 when the season began, Andreescu now stands one victory from putting the finishing touches on one of the greatest Grand Slam success stories of the last two decades.

"If someone told me a year ago that I'd be in the finals of the US Open this year, I'd tell them 'You're crazy,'" Andreescu said on court after the match.

Crazy good is more like it.

Not since a 17-year-old Venus Williams crashed through the gates of the USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center in Queens in 1997 has a player—male or female—been able to reach the final in her US Open singles debut. Andreescu has matched that achievement, and becomes just the third player to reach the final in her US Open main-draw debut.

Daniil Medvedev into first Grand Slam final at 2019 US Open

WHAT HAPPENED: Daniil Medvedev just keeps on winning.

The 23-year-old Russian—who all tournament long has mischievously stoked a love-hate relationship with the New York crowd—is through to his fourth consecutive final of the summer, and his first-ever title match at a Grand Slam. On a rainy Friday evening at the 2019 US Open, the No. 5 seed held off Bulgaria’s Grigor Dimitrov, 7-6, 6-4, 6-3, in Arthur Ashe Stadium.

Medvedev now awaits the winner of the semifinal between three-time champion Rafael Nadal and rising Italian Matteo Berrettini.

“I have to say I love the USA!” said Medvedev, who came into the tournament on the heels of finals in Washington, Montreal and Cincinnati, where he claimed his first Masters 1000 title.

Dimitrov had arrived in Flushing Meadows with his ranking at a seven-year low No. 78. After struggling with a shoulder injury, he had lost seven of his last eight matches. But the one-time world No. 3 and ATP Finals champ, whose game seems all but a carbon copy of Roger Federer’s (hence the reluctant nickname, “Baby Fed”), began to find his form. In fact, he went on to dispatch Federer himself in a thrilling five-set quarterfinal, his first triumph over the Swiss in eight career meetings.

Juan Sebastian Cabal and Robert Farah reflect on their Grand Slam summer

After Robert Farah captured the men’s doubles title with partner Juan Sebastian Cabal (above, left, with his son, Jacobo, and Farah) at Wimbledon this past July—defeating Nicolas Mahut and Edouard Roger-Vasselin in a physical, crackling nailbiter of a contest, 6-7, 7-6, 7-6, 6-7, 6-3—he flew to Bogota in his native Colombia and was immediately swarmed as he walked off the plane.

"I kept saying to the Colombian media, 'I felt like Shakira for two hours,'" he recalled. "You come out and there are all these journalists, and everyone’s coming [up to you] and they’re chanting 'Colombia, Colombia!' And there's a bunch of flags in the airport. Sebas [Cabal] arrived to Cali, Colombia, and there were basically 20,000 people there. They received him with a fire truck. They put him on top of the fire truck with the flags and there was a caravan that went into the city."
 
Serena has to tackle her nerves, she has to figure out how relax in the championship matches. Andreescu played a great match.

Bianca Andreescu upsets Serena Williams to win 2019 US Open

WHAT HAPPENED: #SheTheNorth? She the champion.

Nineteen-year-old Canadian Bianca Andreescu sealed her first Grand Slam title on Saturday, downing 23-time major champion Serena Williams in the 2019 US Open women's singles final, 6-3, 7-5.

The teenager from Mississauga, Ontario, becomes the first Canadian woman to win a Slam singles title in the Open era, and joins Naomi Osaka and Ashleigh Barty as first-time Slam winners in their maiden final appearance over the past 12 months.

"I was feeling many, many things before the match, more than any other match. In the finals, playing Serena. I just tried to breathe as much as I could from the moment I woke up until the match. I tried to just do that throughout the whole match, to just keep my nerves in place," Andreescu said. "It wasn't easy at all, but I think that's what I've been doing really well throughout this whole year."

For the first hour of the match, the rookie looked more like the veteran, as she kept Williams guessing with precise, aggressive hitting off the ground, and dominated rallies with her forehand.

Williams, meanwhile, struggled on serve, and allowed Andreescu to build a hefty 6-3, 5-1 lead. The American double-fautled three times to lose serve over the first set-and-a-half, and found herself a point away from defeat as Andreescu served for the match the first time, in the seventh game of the second set.
 
What a match.

Rafael Nadal defeats Daniil Medvedev in five-set 2019 US Open final

WHAT HAPPENED: Rafael Nadal prevented one of the most remarkable comebacks in tennis history to win his 19th career Grand Slam title, and his fourth US Open crown. After nearly five hours of drama in Arthur Ashe Stadium, the Spaniard survived an inspired effort from Russian No. 5 seed Daniil Medvedev, 7-5, 6-3, 5-7, 4-6, 6-4, in the 2019 men's singles final.

After leading by two sets and a break, Nadal found himself facing three break points in his opening service game of the deciding set. He saved all three, then edged back in front—this time for good—when a backhand winner punctuated a 28-ball rally on break point for 3-2. The tension persisted until the last ball, as Nadal saved a break point in his final service game.

As Nadal found championship form on Sunday, Medvedev, known for his on- and off-court smarts, had plenty of answers in the face of the ultimate examination.

"The way you are playing is a big joke," an endearing Medvedev told Nadal during the trophy ceremony. "It's very tough to play against you."
