On an unusually cool and crisp August morning, just as play was beginning around the grounds of the USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center on Day One of the 2019 US Open, a large crowd gathered in the shadow of Arthur Ashe Stadium for a very special occasion: the unveiling of a statue honoring the pioneering champion Althea Gibson. Gibson, who broke the color barrier in tennis with her debut at the U.S. National Championships at Forest Hills in 1950, was the also the first African-American to win a Grand Slam title, taking the crown at Roland Garros in 1956. The following year, she was likewise the first African-American to take the Wimbledon and U.S. titles; a twin-bill that she repeated the following year. Gibson, who passed away in 2003 at the age of 76, will now have a permanent place of honor on the grounds of the USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center

"Althea Gibson’s talent, strength and unrelenting desire to achieve made her a great champion,” said Patrick Galbraith, USTA President and Chairman of the Board. “She made tennis a better place, by opening doors and opening minds, doing so with grace and dignity. She is receiving a recognition she richly deserves.”
 
I agree she has nothing to prove, but I think she will play until the next olympics, unless her rankings drop her out of the top 100.

Good to see Coco continuing her Grand Slam run! She will be the ultimate force in about 2 years! It will be a delight to see her and Osaka battle on Saturday. I also think Vee will call it quits after Tokyo Olympics next year.
 
I watched her play doubles today, they should have put them on a larger court. Court 5 was a mistake by the Usta.
 



Sad to see Novak out due to injury.

Serena is in trouble, she rolled her ankle.

WHAT HAPPENED: On a night of champions, 23-time Grand Slam champion Serena Williams opened the Arthur Ashe Stadium program Tuesday with a virtuous performance, beating Qiang Wang, 6-1, 6-0 to reach the 2019 US Open semifinals.

It will be the 13th appearance in the Open final four for the six-time winner. This was her 100th match win here, coming 30 years to the day when Hall of Famer Chris Evert won her tournament record 101st win.

“It never crossed my mind that I would get to 100,” Williams told the fans.

A packed house filled the big stadium for the starry night that also featured the men’s all-time winningest Grand Slam champion Roger Federer in his quarterfinal against Bulgarian Grigor Dimitrov.

The A-list celebrities in the audience included golfers Tiger Woods and Adam Scott, Hollywood stars Amy Schumer, Vanessa Williams and Queen Latifah and former Yankee manager Joe Torre.

WHAT HAPPENED: In an electric atmosphere with tennis worthy of a championship match, Roger Federer and Grigor Dimitrov battled through five riveting and dramatic sets to give a packed Arthur Ashe Stadium crowd all that they came for—and more—on Tuesday at the US Open.

Relentless in his shot-making and intensity, Dimitrov scored the biggest upset of his career by toppling the five-time Open champion, 3-6, 6-4, 3-6, 6-4, 6-2, in the quarterfinals.

Once ranked No. 3 in the world in 2017, but now unseeded at No. 78, Dimitrov is into his first Open semifinal and third Slam final four. The 28-year-old previously made the 2014 Wimbledon and 2017 Open semifinals.

“Only thing I kept thinking was to stay in the match, in the match,” he said after his first career win over the Swiss great in eight tries. “I’m just happy.”
