2015 SWAC Football Preview

I said this last year and got a thread started about me on the Smack Board smh (as long it's the usual JSU/SU/GSU pissing match everything is cool). Nothing wrong with smack but some of us actually like to discuss football and basketball in here.

Common sense would tell you that they (JSU) will win 4-5 games at the most this year but the non-sports guy (who doesn't even go to games) will troll you into believing they are one of the top teams in FCS

To be honest, things change every year, you never know nothing wrong with being optimistic. What kills me is people thinking some teams will automatically be trash without researching the team

Lol TP where did you get this logic bruh...

2015 season...hurry up lol

W/ respect to PVAMU, we're decently optimistic, for the most part.

The defense has no choice but to improve. Our weakness was along the front line. The DL was addressed but I'm not sure if it's the required 2-deep yet. We lacked size and now we have it. We lacked power and we seemingly now have it. We lost 2 great LBers but I think a position change for a former big TB may be in the near future. IMHO, our secondary is the strength of our defense. They may not have had the opportunity to shine due to having to cover for way too long, imho. The secondary has plenty of experience and go-getters who hit :D .

Offensively? We return FCS all-american Hebert in the backfield along w/ 2014 pre-season All-SWAC RB Mr Brown. I think we lost 3 along the OL that will have to be replaced and again, staff has addressed this w/ size and power (legit). The WR corp returns and has experience. There were a few lol txfers @ the WR position who could possibly make an impact lol. As for QB? I'm not aware.

Coaching wise? These guys worked and are continuing to work overtime. This is the first time our HC has coached as a HC. Our DC? This is his first time coaching as a DC. OC? I'm sure coach Simmons will be a little more hands on w/ the OC - Mr Jackson.

"hands on"? You don't think Simmons will RUN the offense?

We've hired an OC, TP. I'm sure w/ Simmons offensive coaching prowess he'll be a little bit more hands on w/ the O than the D. I haven't spoken w/ the OC yet so I'm not sure what's what. I've spoken to the DC and a few others so I know what they are about, coaching wise and their desires/goals.

Hiring an OC and letting him run the offense is two different things. I can't see Simmons turning that over. Has this guy and Simmons worked together before? In other words, does he know how to run Simmons offense?

That's a question that I cannot answer. Maybe other PVAMUers can shed light.

Bewildered, I jus want to say i appreciate you for actually talking about football and explaining to us what your team has been doing to improve. I applaud your posts and want to actually thank you for talking about football. Seriously.

Hoping to see good things from yall this season.

You are right.. However, we know which teams are typically trash tho.

The defense has no choice but to improve. .

Dude, I predicted ya;ll to win the WEST last year based SOLELY on that very same statement. It didn't happen. Unless the problem was schematic, it will be hard to overhaul the defense in one year. However, I do want to point out that EVERY defense in the SWAC was garbage last year. JSU was #3. Case closed.

I was skeptical of PVAMU winning the SWAC West last fall, especially when Courtney Brown went down and the QB "situation" that was @ hand. Granted, I'm CERTAIN lol that specific PVAMU people, who shall remain nameless lol, were counting on SU's alleged football demise w/ the ncaa and all to help propel PVAMU to the first of the division. It didn't happen. SU came into PVAMU's back door, bytched slapped us up and down our field, and did it w/ a bunch of crabs and obviously GREATer coaching. I think we returned 15-16 starters fall 2014, if memory serves correct.

Someone can correct me if I'm wrong. :-/

I'm not sure on that one, that's why I haven't spoke on our offense. However, I knew they made some REAL changes on defense and in spite of the severe bragging on other teams, I knew we had some dogs on the defense in the secondary this year.

No correction needed when Brown went down, it really wasn't good. Yes SU out coached PV that year, my HS playing self could have made the defensive adjustments to that game smh

It was hard watching that game. They had a bunch of newbies who performed like veterans AND they simply pounded the ball. We lacked size along the defensive front and anything remotely pretending to be a rush. *smh* Offensively? lol Well, our QB held onto the ball too freaking long too much. How many sacks did SU have that game? lol Obviously they sold out to stop Hebert from leaving the backfield and when enticed to throw it, they were sub'ing their DLinemen to keep them fresh. :( Granted, the Texas heat FINALLY caught up to a few of them (cramping) but by then, it was too late for us.

The secondary will get a chance to shine this year! I know that for sure. #2 Damond Jackson will be able to make alot of plays. We've gotten bigger up front and that should allow us to put some pressure on the QB and also free up the LBs on running plays.

I'm not worried about the offensive scheme because Simmons' offense has shown it can put up alot of points. We added some much needed depth to the WR position and we return a solid QB and Courtney Brown at RB to go along with Johnta' Hebert and Arthur Lockett to form in my opinion one of the best backfields in the FCS.

Can we just forget the entire 2014 season? Lol. The SWAC West was served on a platter last year for us and we were outcoached in every SWAC loss outside of Alcorn State.

You all wanna talk football right? Well, let's talk about Simmons. I think he is a good OC and just like any other OC, he needs talent to win. But to ME, Simmons thrives off of what the defense does. Alcorn's defense was able to get teams off the field. Recall the last time PV went to Alcorn? Who won the game for Alcorn, the offense or the defense? I will also say this, your offense will depend on if all of the components are in place and IF you are gonna run Simmons offense (which you all don't seem sure of), you might not get happy until maybe next season.

The one area where you all may have an advantage over Alcorn with Simmons is that Gibbs, Jr. is not a passer. He is a runner. Simmons offense is ground based. If your line can provide the blocking and your RBs can hit holes, you will do well. However, if teams can stop the run game, like JSU did and more than likely what GSU did, then that offense is vulnerable. UNLESS you have a QB that can pick a secondary apart. Gibbs can't throw so that limited Alcorn. Otherwise, you better hope the defense can get the ball back for you. SU didn't have the talent on defense to stop Alcorn's run game so that allowed the Alcorn offense to have a field day. So in other words, if you plan to be successful with Simmons offense, your o-line better be ready!

Yerp.. I just KNOWED ya'll were gonna win the WEST....lol How can a defense be so bad two years in a row. That is sorta why I am shocked that you all didn't just name Orlando for HC and go out and revamp the defense. Now you have to start over on offense and defense. ..and I am not sure that the offense you inherited is better than the one you sent to BAMA State.

But as of right now, I can see you all getting in the mix for the WEST crown. I am not buying the UAPB hype and TxSo is in bad shape. It's between you guys, SU and GSU. Honestly, I don't know how I feel about GSU because, aside from Alcorn, all they did last year was beat some bad teams. They just looked great because no even expected that much. SU is not going in the right direction in my opinion. Aside from all of the mid-season turmoil, SU was not the team they were in 2013 and that 2013 team wasn't even good. So even tho I think PV is 2-3 years away, I think if the ball bounces your way enough, you could be in Houston in December.
