East Division:

AAMU has the opportunity to be the most improved team in the division, if not the conference. Still have questions at QB. Defense will improve. Lot of young starters return. Could challenge Alcorn for Eastern division if QB pans out.

ASU could struggle early, if not all year; Duhart and Cyrus are gone, no Spring practice + new coaching staff. Defense could be saving grace.

Alcorn is still in a class of its own for 2015. Gibbs returns for his senior season. Favored to win the Eastern division. Defense loses 3 starters that combined for 22 sacks.

JSU can rebound from disappointing 2014 w/continued progress from QB LaMontez Ivy. Coaching staff could hold back an otherwise talented roster.

MVSU loses a lot of defense, which was MVSU’s only sparkle last year. Came in dead last scoring offense last year by a mile. Loses QB Patrick Ivy. Comegy has his work cut out for him. Could see some improvements.


West Division:

UAPB is a toss-up; Loses 4 year starter at QB. Offensive coaching must improve and get new QB up to speed. Large recruiting class w/5 UAB transfers.

Grambling returns QB Johnathan Williams who led the SWAC in passing average per game and passing efficiency. Will also challenge for the Western division.

Prairie View will have to replace QB Lovelocke but return RB Herbert who had 1000+ yards and 12 TDs. Also loses LB combo of Howard and Brownell who combined for 11 sacks and 212 tackles.

SU will threaten to win the West with returning Sophomore QB Howard and RB Tillery. Defense will have to replace key starters. WR/Returner Quinn will also be a difference maker.

TxSU has a chance to rebound from 2014's epic collapse. Defense was 2nd overall in 2014; loses DB Tray Walker to the NFL + other key defenders. JUCO signees could be difference makers.


Teams to watch out for: JSU, AAMU and UAPB.

Ummm Duhart was only a JR last season and we have a solid back up in Khalid Thomas that will be able to contribute at the rb position. He rushed for 545 yds last season.
 
East - Alcorn will be the favorites. Defense should take a step back so their offense should have to make it up for it. JSU will have to score to keep them in games because their defense was poo. ASU will have to get adjusted to Jenkins. Defense is Jenkin's strong suit so that might actually help them out this year. AAMU and Valley are both young on the offensive side. Valley has a senior QB who showed some flashed but he has two freshman QBs coming in who might can push him if they can throw well.

West - SU and Grambling should be the favorites. PV and UAPB lost QBs and TxSU had an inconsistent offense
 
Also another thing that may work in our favor is that Alcorn, PV, SU and GSU will be coming to the Gump this upcoming season

As much as I want to say on what we have I'll remain mum. Just know this, we're in good hands at the QB position and also Pre-Season 2014 All-SWAC RB Courtney Brown returns after missing the entire 2014 season. The LB position has been taken care of also...

Settle down lol. These aren't written as hard-line predictions. Just an overview.

What's the expectation at QB? Any camp battles or is one already set in stone?

2 Star that played both OL and DL (he's going to defense I believe). This year's signing class focused on defense (whereas last year offense)

3 years ago, I thought Smiley was a better QB than Lovelocke. If he stays healthy, he should be very productive in Simmon's offense. Check out Bama State Soph QB Ellis Richardson hudl video. Even with the return of Duhart and Toppings, Richardson has Hornet fans excited.

Alcorns Defense as a whole might be better then last season, we will miss those d-line seniors that left though., that will be our weak point to start off... Offensively , no starter left so the sky is the limit as long as they don't get comfortable

That's funny that you mention that about Smiley because that's what most of the PV fans thought too. Smiley just kept getting injured and Lovelocke took advantage of those opportunities after they split time in 2012. After the 2013 fall camp it was clear the coaches wanted to go with Lovelocke and just use Smiley for running.
