2004 Tentative SWAC Football Schedules

Fiyah,

I do not know about the LDC or JSU vs. TxSU date. But, the Southern Heritage Football Classic date for Sept. 18 between JSU and TnSU is contractually set by an outside promoter.

I am also aware that Tennessee State's John Merritt Classic between them and Alabama A & M is set for September 4, 2004.

So, I imagine that Texas Southern and Jackson State are looking for an open date to play this conference mandated game. It will be interesting to view if they can get Prairie View A & M to agree to moving the Texas Southern vs. Prairie View A & M game.

Personally, I would not mind if we open at home with Paul Quinn or Langston and play the Texas Southern vs. Prairie View A & M game a week later.

If it makes sense. However, as I recall the last SU-AAMU game was not that big in Huntsville so maybe you all are making a good decision.

Yeah, Dahill, if moving it makes economic sense. And if SU is winning, they'll be there.

Like I said, y'all the one throwing away money. Why have one great crowd, when you can have 2.

Robber, you have to also realize who you are dealing with. When you need fans to show up even when you are winning, you may have to do things like this.

I also want to say that this is the sorriest JSU schedule that I have seen in a very long time. I hope this is not final....and to hell with this 9-game SWAC schedule.

DaHill, every school changes the Homecoming date to accomodate their needs. JSU has had homecoming as early as September and as late as November.

JSU aint AAMU.... we have NEVER had a homecoming in September of November.... It is always the same weekend, or if there isnt a home game that weekend, the following weekend... usually first weekend in October.

I still think someone screwed up, I would like to see it confirmed from another source other than the tentative JSU side.

We couldn't play TxSu on the next weekend because that is when we play SU. I like playing TxSu on the Labor Day weekend, although we haven't held up our side of the football competition, it just tradition that's been played for the last 18 years.

Its obvious that the principles of business, accounting, and marketing are not in use for AAMU. Maybe thats why they are still in the position they are in. I hope that mentality changes soon.

True, but remember the SU vs. PA&MU game had changed date from just the season before in 2002.

I would also like to see it confimed from another source, but even JSU states that it is tentative. I am working on my sources in regards to Prairie View, but I know for a fact that our schedule is tentative and a work in progress. We are planning on getting Jackson State back on the schedule for one and moving the Southeastern Louisania date. I am sure you are aware of some if not all that I listed.

Remember the schedules will change to some degree and even more than usual because of going from 1) the 2002 & 2003 12 game format back to the 2004 11 game format because of the number of Saturday weekends NCAA guidelines and 2) the SWAC 9 game mandate.

These rules will create a situation where several SWAC schools will need to work together to help manuevor their schedules, i.e. AA&MU, UAPB, & PVA&MU moving previously scheduled weekend games to help AA&MU & UAPB to facilitate a weekend match-up to allow that game to be play at the beginning of the season instead of the end for the Budweiser Gateway Classic in St. Louis, MO. and i.e. the ASU vs. SU game date will change. This game will be moved to the first weekend of the season to be played in Detroit for the 2nd annual Detroit Football Classic.

Southern University Board of Supervisors has not approved Southern playing Alabama State in Detroit this year; mainly because the number of Road Trips this will mean for the Jaguar Nation. The Board meets on next Friday and I'll find out if the item is on the agenda for this meeting or the February meeting.

Thanks and I can appreciate that arrangement. But, would not Southern have to play Alabama State on the road anyway to return the home game from this past season, either in Montgomery, Mobile or Detroit for that matter.

GR and Robber it is the principles of business and marketing skills that help make the decision to play SU on homecoming. What you are proposing have not worked in the pass and will not work in the future. Take any luke warm SWAC Fan and they will select the game more interesting to them. You would be surprise to know which visiting team is the worst draw in Huntsville in the entire SWAC.

JSUer's you have to realize that AAMU only drew 15K to their homecoming last year. ...and it was a good year for them. So, it's not like their Homecomings are big draws anyway.

and we won the game 63-0..... tell me about YOUR homecoming??? How many people saw you lose to a sorry UAPB team

20K fans showed up to see us (a 2-7 team) lose to UAPB. We had close to 40K fans in 2001 and 2002. Any more questions.

I am sure you are right but what does that have to do with AAMU not being able to draw a HC crowd. JSU fans were disgruntled and we had a lower than usual turnout. What's AAMU excuse??

TP

You can see these people have no business savy. Please leave them alone. Big crowds is not their forte? Thats why they avoid big games.

I wonder how many crowds BELL will bring this year now that every JSU fan knows he has poor coaching skills. Its evident that Culberson failed in the hiring process and will continue to suffer for as long as Coach Bell is at the helm....such a poor business decision to bring in a Coach who went 1-9 in HS and 2-10 at JSU...

A&M's homecoming is always around the same time late sept-early oct....we also tend to play SU around that time! therefore the SU game will be Homecoming this year just like in 98' ...thanks for all the concern but we got it covered ;) thanks

This AAMU v.s. S.U. game is getting interesting. I will probably make this out of a weekend jaunt.

If the Detroit game gets approved, I will probably party in Motown also.

Mighty Dog,

Even with the past attendance at homecoming, I still think y'all should take the chance on having a 2nd crowd over 15,000 rather than one. SU for homecoming is not a smart business move. When I grew up, SU was always JSU's homecoming opponent every other year. They sucked back then, too. When they started beating us, we moved them. I will submit to you that even if SU were to go on a 40 game losing streak, as long as their fans come to Jackson as they have been, SU won't be our homecoming opponent again. Just bad business to have them for homecoming.

A&M and Jacksonville

AD Martin stated plenty of times that he more than likely would break the contract with Jacksonville because we always set attendence records everytime we go to JSU but they dont never bring no fans here...So we may be playing another school in there place... also I dont think we are playin Savannah State again, so that is another opening.

Troy State was doing Bama State the same way. We would bring the house to their place and they brought nothing to Montgomery. At the end of the contract, L C asked for a two hundred thousand dollar guarantee to play in Troy. As you can see that ended that series.

Robber the obvious does not work as it does for most SWAC Schools. Huntsville is a unique City and the majority of our fans come from over 100 to 150 miles to attend our games. Huntsville is made up of folks from other Cities & States and they could care less about AAMU, in fact, if Auburn or Alabama are on TV they are going to stay home. I understand the logic in what you are saying but it will not work in Huntsville. However, as I once stated, our attendance is up since we joined the SWAC. When we play SU for homecoming the numbers fall off for the MCC, because fans make a decision to attend the MCC or the SU game.
We have to look at average attendance for the year. We sell more tickets on game day than all week long. The reason is people wait to see it it going to rain. As we build our program, it is possible that more fans will be attractive to our games.
