Jaguar Nation
2 drives and 1 controversy

JACKSON State fans will remember Saturday as the night Robert Kent led the Tigers back from a 10-point fourth-quarter deficit.

Southern University fans will remember it as the night their team got robbed by the men in stripes.

The one incontrovertible fact shone brightly on the Mississippi Veterans Memorial Stadium scoreboard as both sets of fans vanished into the night:

JSU 24, SU 21.

Southern University had a first down at the JSU 18 with half a minute left when Terrence Levy dropped back to pass, looked, looked, looked and finally took off toward the end zone. The Jaguars had no timeouts left, so Levy needed to do one of three things:

Get a first down.

Get a touchdown.

Get out of bounds.
He did none of the above.

He pitched the ball out of bounds at the JSU 10 with about 12 seconds left. The referees ruled him down before the pitch. The clock kept running.

The Jaguars hurried to line up. The referees patiently wiped off the ball, just as slowly as they'd done it all night, and the clock ran out as Southern's players watched helplessly.

Jaguar assistant coaches raced across the field and yelled at the fleeing referees. Umpire George Stanley yelled back.

Meanwhile, JSU's players and fans celebrated their team's second consecutive victory over their biggest out-of-state rival.

"We can just send the game film in, and they'll make their analysis," Southern coach Pete Richardson said.

He should save himself the postage.

This wasn't the first controversy in the history of this series. JSU fans will tell you, for example, about the night the clock mysteriously went out at Mumford Stadium.

JSU players, whose memories are shorter, remembered the clock running out a week ago on their rally against Alabama State.

"There's some funny things going on up there in the clock booth," Kent said. "It was for our favor this time."

Kent threw for 595 yards against Alabama State. He had thrown for just 81 yards, no touchdowns and three interceptions through three quarters Saturday.

But Kent wasn't through.

A 32-yard touchdown pass to T.C. Taylor made it 21-17 with 9:30 left. Then came the go-ahead drive, when Kent did it all, including a 22-yard pass to Taylor and a 16-yard fourth-and-7 pass to Taylor, plus four carries for 13 yards and a touchdown.

The drive not only won the game but also kept JSU in the Southwestern Athletic Conference race. Hughes credited the defense, the offensive line, the receivers and, finally, himself.

"At the end of the game, they put it in my hands," he said, "and I won it."

Only the Southern University fans will remember it differently.

I DON'T KNOW WHAT KENT WAS TALKING ABOUT...THE CLOCK IN OUR FAVOR THIS TIME. THEY PUT MORE TIME BACK ON THE CLOCK TWICE AGAINST BAMA ST.

SWAC REFS SUCK.

BUT THE ARTICLE WAS TRUTHFUL...HE DIDN'T GET OUT OF BOUNDS...HE HYDROPLANED OUT OF BOUNDS. HE SHOULD HAVE JUST THROWN THE BALL AWAY.

it looked like he threw the ball out-of-bounds on purpose, meaning the time still runs

Pete said he tried to pitch the ball but I doubt that

SU was so mad that they did not play their alma mater and their side emptied out faster than a beer barrel at a drunk convention

THERE WAS NOBODY FOR HIM TO PITCH IT TO OTHER THAN THE 2 JACKSON PLAYERS THAT TACKLED HIM. HE WAS NOT OUT OF BOUNDS AND HE WAS NOT TRYING TO PITCH THE BALL.

I am going to say it again SU, GSU and UAPB. If your teams aren't up by 2 touchdowns with 2 minutes to play, then "JSU" referees will decide who the winner will be. By luck, ASU beat JSU because of the poor officiating. If there wasn't any JSU cheating, ASU would have scored 80 points.

The refs put time back on the clock in the JSU-Bama State game because every time JSU called a timeout, the clock kept running. And the last time they put 5 seconds back on the clock, but the clock ticked an extra 10 seconds off. We got shorted 5 seconds. But y'all don't pay attention that stuff. You just beech about any call that goes against you, regardless of whether it's the proper call.

No Excuses

We have no erxcuses. We lost. Wait till next year.
Game was wet, however Sunday was beautiful. At church the pastor congratulated the tiger and the folks at Picadilly were real hospitable. I didn't see state troopers harassing the Jags going back down I-55.

good game.

I hate that the SWAC refs just won't allow the players to decide the game. The officials were so slow about getting the ball spotted on the last play, although Levy should've thrown the ball away to stop the clock. SWAC refs, where are the NFL Replacement refs when you need them.

All I can say is...

we blew it. If if was a skiff we'd all go for a boat ride.

Nonetheless, I do hate that officiating had anything to do with the game at all. What don't kill ya, makes ya stronger!

J-State win the rest and MAYBE we'll meet again to save the SCG.

If we had held strong to our 10 point lead, it wouldn't matter. Had we kicked a field goal, instead of that running play, we could have been in overtime. The coaches and players decided their destiny.
The better team can alway overcome the elements, be it rain, snow, bright sun, or sorry arse SWAC referees. J-State was the better team that night. Congrats.
After the Bayou Classic, maybe we'll see you all again in Birmingham.

In looking at the video footage, Levy's knee was down when he "fumbled" the ball out of bounds, so I think the refs made the correct call - however, with 8 seconds left, Southern probably should have had just enough time to get to the line of scrimmage and spike the ball, if the officials were really on point - but the bottom line is that if you play well enough throughout the game, you will not be in that type of situation in the first place....

Now with the scoreboard mysteriously going black at Mumford a couple years ago....hmmm :D

Officiating? They did what they were supposed to do. We had voluntarily bent over, so they screwed us. We put ourselves in that position so we got what we were looking for. And if you are expecting compassion from the people on this board forget it. A win against SU is a win against SU. They love it, we hate it, so it goes.

There was a man in the area when Levy pitched the ball. It was smart on his part to try it. The either would have been picked up by Devin Lewis, gone out of bounds as a fumble, or been a forward lateral. Doesn't matter at this point does it?

Bottom line is we lost a football game we should have won easily. Too many mistakes by the offense and horrible game management by the coaching staff just put us in the position we found ourselves in then and having to find reasons to be upset now.

The scoreboard says we lost and we lost on our terms because we gave it away to a team that didn't play hard until they saw us willing to help them. I told Kent after the game that he was the best player on a field that featured two shaky teams; one that is is not as bad as its record and another that is not as good as theirs.

If you can stomach it, tell the JSU folks congratulations (you're a better man than me if you can), wish them no ill will, and hope that our team realizes that giving away games to dank teams is not a good thing.

I don't believe you can play any better. You probably don't either. You played your best game against Alabama State and lost. We gave you a game and like any deprived creature, you took it.

Shame on us, woe to you.

I didn?t see the game, but I read the original post. My question is this, how did it take thirty seconds to run one play? I think you should be able to get off at least two to three plays with no time outs remaining. My second question is this, if the QB went out of bounds with twelve seconds remaining on the clock, what took so long for the refs to spot the ball. If Southern?s QB threw the ball out of bounds, where was Southern?s ball boy to hand the refs a dry ball? I?ve never seen it take twelve seconds to spot a ball.
I can?t believe it, but it sound like Southern got raped.

All I have to say is that JSU got some help not only on that last call but on a few questionable interference calls. Remember the one that Taylor tripped with SU defenders two steps in front and back of him? Remeber the 3 or so that were over thrown about 10 years and a flag was tossed for interference. What did Cooper do or say to get thrown out of the game on that last JSU score - not just a penalty, but put out of the game?

Don't get me wrong. I went to a high school that was always getting the suspious calls. So, my coaches coached us to not play in a manner that promoted the opportunities for such suspect calls. True somethings aren't in your control. But, we have got to get our discipline back to the Pete Richardson level. Pete, you have got to turn the heat up on the assistance. There have been changes and those changes aren't maintaining our system.

We have got to stop letting up on teams. I've seen the team 3 times this year. The first 2 times we were throwing the ball at will and got a lead and shut it down by forcing the run. Saturday we ran the ball down JSU's throat at will, even scored with a nasty in your face run. All of sudden, we want to force the throwing game. In both cases, we lost our timing and the opponet got back into the game. In this one, JSU got back into the game at the worst time - the end. We used Singleton and Joubert perfectly, but we didn't work Devin in enough with the slant. I'm am really shocked we didn't get Bridges more into the passing attempts. He was home and should be a shinning star for us the next couple of years.

In spite of the poor penalties and sideline ineffency that is causing the wrong people to be on the field defensively (causing the timeout to be used up), the Jags hung in there. I think it is because the fans were really into the game including the band. It seems over the last 2 years that both the band and fans tend to just watch the game unless things are going well. The team needs to be able to feed off of us in the tough times. Why have all that Jaguar Nation support if it isn't supporting in the tough times. Remember, Fight Fight Fight until we win the victory.

Those who were around me, including my fellow alums from the Dallas area, say me as angry as I've ever gotten over a game at halftime and at the end of the game. I couldn't believe the refs would drag tail like that and let the clock just run out. But, we didn't it to ourselves. We should have never put the refs in that position.

Kudos to TC Taylor and Kent. These don't quit and play solid all game. We stayed on Kent, but he never lost his poise and Taylor just kept working to get open for him.

SU Jaguars, Raise Up!!!

PEACE!!!

Diesel,

We gift raped y'all points all game long. Took points out of own hands all game long. Had enough turnovers to last a lifetime. And you say we played well??? Dude, we played worse than SU and beat ya. We played worse against Bama State and loss.

ZNSPR8502,

And like I been saying on the Smack Board, sitting with the opposing fans helps point out the bad calls. SuperJag96 sat with the Mafia. I'm betting you won't see him post about getting cheated. We had him admitting we got raped on calls all night long. We made him see it.

And again, I ask, just like ole Schiefelbein (or however you spell it), do y'all think your garbage azz kicker woulda made that FG??? I think not. He worse than ours.

Robber,
You are judging the way you played against us against the way you ran over Valley and Alabama State, two teams that we are light years ahead of. You played your best game against a better team and found a way to win.

Your team is average just as my is underachieving, so the team that played the best ball in the end won.

And again, I ask, just like ole (or however you spell it), do y'all think your garbage azz kicker woulda made that FG???

Whether SU would have made the field goal is beside the point. The fact remain it was ample time on the clock to get another play off. The finale play could have been a fake field goal attempt. We will never know what it would have been. Schiefelbein needs to stop speculating what he think the finale play would been and just report the facts.

Fact is JSU won, SU lost.

Diesel,

If you consider a 5 turnover performance a good performance, then I wouldn't want you on my side. If you consider 150 yards in penalties a good performance, then you got issues. We played a bad game. We played well at the very end. But we showed it don't take much to beat SU.

No, we showed that only SU can beat SU. JSU just so happened to be standing in the cheese line when we were giving one away.

You turn the ball over 5 times everygame. Alabama State made you pay. We didn't. We turned the ball over 4 times, got a punt blocked, committed silly penalties, and wasted time outs, and best you could come up with all of your high power is 24 points. Let's face it, your win was a gift enjoy it.

I am wasting my time. You will not understand how sorry your team is until you get blasted, which is going to happen soon.

You won. That's it. Case closed.

And How...

Diesel,

You da man, but now you know why I went ballistic on the SMACKpage. Even in admitting defeat, these jokers still trying to smack with a subpar game against a sleeping jaguar.

We control OUR destiny. They don't.

PERIOD!!!

All will be revealed this week when the other Tiggers play in Jacktown. One of them is faking and I am curious to find out who!
