@GSUperTiger you beat me to it. I just read the story a few seconds ago. That's a ringing endorsement for HBCU football if there ever was one.

But Fobbs has the other takeway from the article

Grambling coach Broderick Fobbs has built a mini-dynasty in north Louisiana. He played for Grambling in the 1990s and has found the sweet spot for recruiting good athletes who might not be quite SEC-caliber but are a good fit for the HBCU experience.

"It offers a little different thing to the student-athlete," said Fobbs, 43. "There's a lot of universities that are inclusive for minorities, but I think in all areas they're not at times. Let's face it: The elephant in the room is that racism exists on many levels and many times African-Americans have to transform to a different way than they're normally, culturally doing things in order to be received and accepted from time to time.

"And I think a lot of that has to do with why HBCUs are so important. It allows you to be yourself, be comfortable and to be around a lot of the same things that you grew up listening to and being around. ... It's almost like sleeping in your own bed or being in your own house."

It's gonna take a while deprogram enough of these 4-5 star kids that warming the bench at Bama or Texas is not as beneficial as playing actual games at a HBCU and getting game film. If you are as good as that 4 star rating you should be able to dominate and he has played well enough for a bowl invite. With the NFl slowly migrating to the dual threat QB that can throw and run, he definitely has a shot at landing a roster spot and learning the NFL game for a couple of years

I meant to say that in my post. Saban or Meyer will sell them on Pookie getting to the NFL by coming to their school not realizing that they are 3-4 deep with 4-5 stars at every spot so if Pookie doesn't stand out he is gonna be warming the bench and possibly get jumped by another Pookie with the same NFL dreams

Yep, you beat me to the punch. I was just about to post that portion of the article as well. Fobbs hit the nail on the head with that statement.

Playing in games like the Celebration Bowl and posting multiple draft picks yearly will help deprogram these families.

Yes sir, but talent is still in BCF. Besides the transfers, the trend for BCF players getting into the league has been the traditional path of being recruited out of high school. Like Chad and Chester from Gram, Armstead from UAPB, and hopefully Danny Johnson from Southern - BCF still has a nice pipeline considering the obstacles.

Look across the board. Parker from NCAT and Leonard from SCState should be drafted this year. I think Thompson, the LB from Tuskegee, will get looks, along with that DL and WR from Tennessee State.

Hargrave from SCState is doing well with the Steelers.

I told someone the other day the HBCUs have recovered from the college football boom of schools bringing on football/moving up to FBS in the late 90s/early 2000s. There are still some highly talented kids playing at our schools.
 



This thread takes me back to the coaching thread when someone noted that a coach would rather coach at Alabama A&M than Grambling because of location.

Interesting.
 
Reminds me of the special about Black athletes integrating the SEC (I think it focused on the SEC) and this parent was standing near some of Alabama's finest and they were calling his son Leroy (substituting Leroy for the N word)....and the parent said something to the affect of look at Leroy run. Then he grinned and said he walked away. He was so thrilled with himself. They are denigrating his son in his presence and he is happy.

My father (TI) Tuskegee Institute for you youngans, always preached that integration was the leading factor in the decline of BCF
 
It was a SWAC grad who put Tarik Cohen with the bears. He will probably get promoted for it. Those scouts are looking tough for our hidden gems

The Bears went small school in the draft this year. They grabbed Cohen and then their starting TE from a D2 school.
