My instincts tell me the cancellation is due to the surprise of poor financials, and the fallout from some presidents finding a lot more dirt under the rug than they were led to believe.
I could be wrong, but I doubt it.

The SCG had a higher attendance than the FCS chanpionship game as well. In my humble opinion, Duer's not being completely honest as to why the SCG is being nixed. There has to be something more going on behind the scenes. Like I said, I'd rather have an SCG than some game against the MEAC....especially if their fans are not going to show up.

Could be. When one looks at the overall numbers in Houston, the game averaged 34,000 fans. That's a high number to not be able to make a profit surplus. Like I stated, the FCS championship game averages almost 10,000 less fans than the SCG, so what you're suggesting could be closer to the truth than what Duer's saying.
Then again, ESPN folks could've given the SWAC a choice of which game they''d televise, the SCG or the SWAC/MEAC game.

Look at it this way.
Why else would you agree to a 3 year extension of the SCG in Houston, go to a 7 game mandate, then almost immediately send a wrecking ball to BOTH of those strategies?

The above article is so misleading it's not even funny. The article stated the following: "Commissioner Duer Sharp said in a news release announcing the decision. “By focusing on the Celebration Bowl, we can continue to grow the [game] as an HBCU classic for the teams and fans of both conferences and for HBCU football nationally.”
For Sharp, and for everyone involved in this landmark decision, this makes good sense. For starters, interest in the SWAC championship game, originally introduced in 1999, has been waning for years. Last year’s matchup between Alcorn State and Grambling State brought just under 25,000 fans — a 15,000-plus decline from 2015, which featured the same two teams.
The article cited ONE year as claim that the SCG has been in decline FOR YEARS. That's a ball-faced lie and a total misrepresentation of the game, SWAC fans and SWAC support.
Duer Sharpe simply had an agenda and carried it out. The SCG was in good shape attendance-wise for the most part and the numbers prove it.
The man should've just been honest and admitted that he wants the million dollar payout from ESPN. He didn't have to insinuate that SWAC folks didn't support the SCG because we did.

That depends on what happens with the SWAC......
I think it just depends on what happens at ESPN. So far this bowl has out played over half of the FBS bowl games in attendance and tv ratings.

You gotta have presidents that actually care about athletics. The turnover in the SWAC is why he keeps his job. I won't count Bynum because it's a lateral move (although if he shows the same amount of interest in athletics at JSU like he did at Valley you might need to be worried). But Valley and PV will be filling vacancies and you don't know if they will care about athletics or not. The others have shown that they just flow with the motions and let Sharp do his thing

I have told people that Duer has served in a perfect storm - meaning he has served during a time when unfortunately as a conference we have constantly has unstable leadership at the president positions, either interim presidents or new presidents. Interim presidents are not going to do much along the lines of athletics, new presidents - SWAC leadership is near the bottom of the to do list when they come in, they will more than likely have to deal with their own athletic programs/vacancies/changes before they even turn an eye to the SWAC - not to mention the other main lines of fire they have to deal with when they come in - alums, schools finances, academics, finding where the landmines are so they dont blow themselves up etc. By the time one of the new presidents gets settled in - we have 2 new interim presidents lol.
662, you make a valid point. The only thing I would add regarding the presidents (or newly named presidents) is that it's not that they don't care about athletics, it's just that they inherit so many damn problems when they take over our schools, they simple can't make athletics a priority. They have to make sure the damn doors stay open (first) before they can focus on athletics.
Correct Kenn, that was pretty much what I was trying to say on my post...
I'm curious, why does this question always come up? What factors are in play to give anyone the impression that this game is going to end sometime soon? What am I missing?

yes. All schools played each other... and back then we had co-champions. No need to break the tie in most years unless playoff berth was at stake.

Kenn, I dont think any of us know but I personally feel that you don't let something go that you have 70-80% say over for something that you only have 30-40% say over. The SCG made our seasons interesting.
