Ok so now you want to act like some kind of special. Birmingham did not offer incentives of up to 500k a year, Birmingham cut a check for 500k a year to the swac office, that 500k helped the SWAC with the budget every year. The year the SWAC took football and basketball to Houston, the City of Birmingham stopped allocating the SWAC that 500k. Duer Sharp has not found any kind of revenue stream or source to replace the half a million the city of Birmingham provided for the SWAC. So you say every city does that, has Houston done it? Has Houston even assisted in the rental of NRG? Has Houston assisted with the usage fees associated with the Toyota Center? What did New Orleans provide SWAC? Please, since 500k is nothing special and thats what all cities do, then please inform us of what these other cities have provided for SWAC. Attractive city Birmingham naw probably not, but could it have been tolerable enough until another funding stream was secured so you dont lose money? Hell yea cause at the end of the day, this is a business. We see the "attractive" city cost us too much and now we hustlin backwards losing money and credibility.

This is a sad day. Other than this past year the attendance in Houston was damn good. Somebody could have used the team with the best record just as the AAC does but noooooo. I wonder what all the options were as they sat at the table discussing this situation?
And to say he wanted us to concentrate on the Celebration Bowl didn't even need to be made. We all know the MEAC has to hold up their end on that.
SMDH, I attended the 1st and quite a few after that and I guess I will be attending this last one as well.
I'm still stuck on what were the other options instead of cancelling it all together?

No I'm not acting special at all, but you seem to be.
Once again there is a difference between giving $500k and MAKING $500k. Keep repeating this and it might finally sink in.
HINT: The interests is about whether the GAME made money. Not how much the SWAC office gets in incentive cash or otherwise.
Yep....so what does that have to do with this conversation?
They did not cut no check to the Swac for 500K. They may have provided up to that amount for all services rendered as the potential cost of the building they are using, cost of providing police for the games and other cost associated with events in the city. It's a ploy to make it seem like they are actually spending that amount of money. What they don't talk about is the amount they get in return for said events being held in their city.

Hell, the SWAC was headquartered in NOLA before Birmingham, and the SWAC basketball tournament was in Baton Rouge more than once. Don't see us up in arms about it every time someone mentions the basketball tournament saying ooh it should go back to Shreveport or Baton Rouge.
Please just chill. We should've scrapped the SCG years ago when the SWAC turned conference play into high school district play by making everyone play each other. So the SWAC was bound to lose eventually with that redundancy, from a logic standpoint. All this other stuff about venues and stuff were just lipstick on pigs.

I didn't see a point of having a SCG since everybody was playing each other. If everybody is playing each other then you should be able to determine an outright winner.

I felt this was as well. It never made sense. I think by doing a 9 game mandate lessened the work that our ADs had to do because they knew they only had to schedule 2 games outside of conference play. Also, Duer Sharp could have developed policies and punishments if teams did not abide by the rules but of course his bosses (Presidents) would side with him since they really knew nothing about athletics.
Let's just say that the "protective shield" Duer had when Wright (PV) and Rudley (TSU) were chairman of the council of presidents is now gone. It's my understanding that Rudley and Wright were rather fond of Duer. I don't think the same can be said for the existing (newer) presidents...especially after what was discussed at the last president's meeting last week.

Let me say this first and be clear - my point of contention is not the games should have stayed here because I live in Birmingham - I support the SWAC and I want what's best for the SWAC. That being said - as someone that at the time worked for the City of Birmingham was on the recruiting team that led to the SWAC moving to Birmingham - helping to wine and dine Commish Frank and his wife, helping them get settled in Birmingham and working closely with Robert Vowels in several capacities with the SWAC - coordinating Youth events and Championship events - the city provided CASH outlay to the SWAC with an average yearly amount of over $500,000 a year - that was in addition to for the first years the free office space for the SWAC, the usage of city facilities - Legion Field, Fair Park etc - the cost of public safety personnel - fire, police, emergency for SWAC events. The SWAC became a line item of fiscal responsibility in the city of Birmingham's budget every year. Now my point again of moving the SCG - whether you say there is a difference in how you you are given vs how much is made or whatever - what I am telling you is further evidenced in a couple of ways....If your point is Birmingham only gave incentives (not true but I will play) - then with the game NOW becoming too expensive for the SWAC to continue - then exactly what incentives did Houston provide? How did they help the SWAC? Again because remember it was said what Birmingham did was nothing special - so please explain. My main problem - and I stated it earlier - I would be crazy to think playing at NRG is not a better opportunity or facility for the SGC - I dont argue that at all. But in leaving Birmingham WITHOUT the Half of a Million in sure funds - not incentives - and having absolutely no replacement for those funds, in addition to now having to pay for NRG, having to pay for all other related expenses - what kind of business model is that? And I said it years ago and I will continue to say it about the SCG - whereever it is was to be played. The games would never be a 45k and up in attendance on a yearly basis. If the game averages 30k and up, you are doing great because you have to look at and understand the economics of your base. You are talking about black folks right at Christmas time and in many years we dont know who is going to be in the SCG until maybe 2 weeks out. The average supporter of the teams in the game are going to be coming in from out of town and when you are dependent on that for your attendance adding in the economics of Christmas etc - for this game to get 30k and up is great. Duer cares nothing of the SWAC, this is a major step backwards and I will be in my President's ear this week regarding this decision and the direction of SWAC leadership in general.

For GSU people we faced this last year:
1. Bayou Classic
2. SWAC Championship
3. Celebration Bowl
I don't know about anybody's else's pocket but my pocket can't afford all three during Christmas....LOL...this is especially true if you do not live in a city that host it.
I think if the SWAC is stopping the SWAC Championship the presidents and SWAC office has to do some HEAVY work in supporting the Celebration Bowl Initiative. I would suggest at the beginning of the year offering package deals with tickets and hotels. Then partnering with Delta Airlines for discounts.
I would even go as far as to solicit a traveling agency as the point people to make these reservations for people.
I cannot speak on Dr Rudley but I know FACTUALLY Duer and Dr Wright were ace boons.
I tried to tell folks duer should've been an employee @ PV he was on campus too much. Waaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaay toooooooooooooooooooo much to have the capacity of "conference commissioner." (esp during those late 2008s/2009s/2010s) ::read::And Founder I know you are a true fan so again think of the casual fans that might be interested but you gotta factor in those other expenses. And that is why if folks would stop trying to compare the SCG with other Classic games that have been around for years and you plan your vacations around etc - and stop placing those attendance expectations on the SGC then everything would be ok. Because of all of those factors, my expectation or hope for each SCG is to do the average attendance of the Conference as a whole - if the SWAC average game attendance is 19k - then at least that and above is a success. The same with the Basketball Tournament. We have to face the fact that we are not a basketball conference - in terms of attendance. When your major conference rival games are only averaging 3 to 5k in attendance on a weekend - it it kind of crazy to think we suddenly are going to have this explosive tournament attendance when once again - people are not sure who is going to be in the tourney until the last minute. You have some die hard fans that are going to attend regardless but that is not a large portion of the fan base for the SWAC. So I think the sooner we make some true realizations about us, not hyping ourselves out of our mind, and adjust to those realizations, the sooner we can honestly look at where we are and more importantly build a foundation to get us to where not only we need to be but to where we want to be.

Hell let me take it a step further...this year I am only attending the Bayou Classic. My wife and I are taking our honeymoon during New Years.
Cancelling the SCG would be good if and only if contingencies are put in place for all members of the conference to FULLY support the Celebration Bowl no matter what team is participating. This involves a HEAVY public relations and advertising push from the SWAC Office. I mean in August they should have student packages available to all schools; and require universites to offer season ticket holders a package etc....
