Nike contract didn't do much to help. 3/4 of the meac schools are still losers.

Anybody care to explain why you would need a transitional period for an apparel contract ?

MEAC Media Day teases with some new uniform designs and info

Uniforms have been perhaps the hottest topic all summer in black college football, mostly due to the MEAC's decision to go away from a singular apparel deal for its programs in order to allow them to negotiate for themselves.

So naturally there was a lot of anticipation of getting a look at new uniforms at the conference's football media day in Norfolk, VA. In the past, teams have generally revealed new uniforms or helmets at the session. With everyone having a new apparel partner since splitting with Russell, the hope was that there would be a mass unveiling of new uniforms for fans and media to see.

Except it didn't quite happen that way.

Only three schools, Morgan State, Delaware State and Norfolk State, brought out their new uniforms to display. The rest either don't have them in yet or elected not to bring them, including Hampton, who revealed its Under Armour jerseys earlier this month.

HBCU Gameday was told that even though the teams are no longer under contract with Russell, expect to see a few teams wearing the brand this season as well. The 10 teams who signed with Nike have a one-year transitional period until next August that allows them to wear Russell apparel while still under the Nike deal.

One of the big surprises of the day was Morgan State showing off an adidas prototype uniform. Sources had indicated that the Baltimore-based school would sign with Baltimore-based Under Armour, but things didn't work out that way.

you have 12 years of russell clothes in the closet and equipment room for 18 teams, you think you can replace all of that in a few months?

I'm not an expert on this sorta stuff but don't they (Russell )replace them every year and why would that be of any concern to Nike or Under Armour ?

you got folks still wearing Russell stuff from years ago as it transitions to practice clothes or alternate jerseys

in this case, teams will have to beef up quickly to have a adequate supply once the transition ends...

Again I'm ot an expert in this sorta thing. All I know is when I get something new the old stuff is going leisure drawer or the dirty rags basket. So again why would Nike or Under Armour care one way or the other?

You and I know that but they reality of it is it's silly to think that's a major factor when it's not. If you ask a kid sure they will give you their input but study after study has shown that isn't even remotely a major factor in their decision making.
What studies? Branding is so important to this generation. Now it might not be the single most important factor in the decision making process, but these kids are brand aware and loyal. Russel sucks and I'm a 42 year old African-American male. Russel sucked when I was in High School. Name one marquee professional athlete in any professional sport that Russell has signed to a deal.......I'll wait. Duer needs to do better, this guy needs to be removed.

Its not conference branding that I'm speaking of, its the consumer product branding. Why wouldn't the conference brass allow the individual schools (swac) the opportunity to negotiate their own uniform deals? How can you adamantly state that nobody cares about the freaking good piece of clothing? Your opinion is not necessarily reflective of the masses.

if they're paying you anything, they care - especially in cases where we are on TV

Uniform design in the SWAC is more important than brand but neither will directly affect winning. Alabama, Auburn, Penn State, Texas and others have not changed there design much in 50 years. Vanderbilt, Maryland, Kentucky, Rutgers and others change every week. Only people who are totally brand conscious have a problem with Russell. Get 4 8 win season in the SWAC with 1 OOC win then talk about brand.

Which is a form of branding at no cost
