SU turned around quick under Dawson Odums. What did he do that Stump didn't? Did the players not like/trust Stump? Bad systems?

Stump had the right ideas and I think the kids liked him okay. He also knew where to recruit. The problem was Stump couldn't get out of his own way. He wanted to be the HC and OC at the same time. Same as Odums being the HC and DC until this year. LOL. Stump was hardheaded when it came to the offense. We got the fact he wanted to run the ball. But we didn't have that type of personnel when he got there. I also think Odums has done a better job in hiring coaches than Stump did and getting the pieces that fit the puzzle. Odums is also a younger guy. A 1997 college grad so he relates to the players for sure. Odums still has his on issues at times. But I think he did learn he shouldn't try to be the DC and HC and fired himself and all his defensive assistants and brought in Broadway folks. So I give kudos for adapting at SU on the fly. We aint the easiest fanbase to appease and we will ride you hard if we feel things are going well or as they should be. Stump was never anyone's choice but our former AD LaFluer. So that got him off to a wrong start right off the get go. At least Big Worm was a popular ADs choice in Broussard. So glad they didn't entertain Jenkins demands and thought Spady was too arrogant or didn't really feel he fit in at SU. LOL.

SU folks still like ole Stump. He just couldn't coach. Heckuva guy who really tried and did at least set us on the right path. After all he did hire Big Worm as his DC before we fired him.

Stump is a great guy and great recruiter. Odums can recruit and his philosophy as far as paying attention to detail is why we're successful on the field.

Things basically line up perfect for Odums. In the very first game as the head coach, he beat the East Division Champs Jackson State 28 to 21. The following year, he beat them again in SCG. I'm not sure if SU would have retained him if those things did not happen.

I have talked with Spady several times and never thought him to be arrogant....Besides, if he is, he would have been just like some of the Jags I met In B.R.

You can't be that way with the SU powers that be. Apparently he did not win over someone on the board in the interview process. He basically set somebody off to the point they were like he can't coach here. So maybe he was too cocky or something. I know how SU powers roll. If they get the impression they will have issues with your personality they will not hire you.

What did Odoms turn around? Heck, Hopson was far more successful than Odoms. Odoms has only one title during his tenure and hasn't won anything in three years.

He's not necessarily "arrogant" but he's not exactly humble either.

Many HBCU administrators and powers-that-be want their coaches to kiss their ass and bend at their will. Since most coaches are former players, those humble church deacon types are few and far between.

The 2013 game at SU when they rallied back to beat PV set Odums up that season as the Jags began to establish identity

If Pv won, They're headed to the title game and no telling what happens after

Some of y'all acting like the man named Odums won three or four titles in a row. Dude won only one and is an average coach at best, who knows little about defense. Heck, he was on the hot seat just last year and still might be depending on how the rest of the year goes.
That's not hate, that's fact. Dude is far from a coaching guru.

At least he has match the number of titles JSU has won with 3 different coaches in past 10 years. And if you go back to the last 15 years, that would be 1 title JSU has won with 5 different coaches.

Remember that the interim season (2012)
Worm beat Jackson, FAMU and Grambling. I think only Worm and Pete beat those three in the same season. Those wins and the promising outlook for 2013 gave Worm some cache and Southern took the interim tag off of him.

2012 was the jump off point for 2013 and 2014. 2013 was Tillery and Quinn's first season on the field. Lost Dray, Doss and others after 2013. Austin Howard took over as a TRUE freshman QB in 2014 and Southern nearly won a second straight SWAC title.

The sanctions stem from late in the Pete era. Stump, and later Worm, inherited those scholarship and practice time restrictions. Morale was low after Pete, and the fractured fan base didn't really get behind Stump. Stump didn't do himself favors with the losing, but he helped right the ship with how Southern recruited.

Who in the hell said his seat was hot? Swac title in 13, west champs in 14 and a few plays from going in 15. No his seat is nowhere near hot.last year, despite the average year we had, we still were in a position to go back a 3rd straight year. And i remember everyone saying he needed to hire a dc and he did that. Nobody mentioned hot seat just stfu
