Southern (BR) to play "Southern" (Hattiesburg, MS) in 2017

I applaud SU for completing its 2017 football schedule in a timely manner, a bird in the hand is worth two in the bush. Some SWAC schools will be scrambling to schedule 11 football games in 2017.

I've heard them on occasion say Southern . I think they started that doing the Pete Richardson era, because I recall a younger cousin of mine who starred there referring to them as that at a family cookout.

Edward Worthy. I believe that's his name.
I'm from B-Town and that's usm's backyard. All my white & black classmates, cousins, friends, teachers, family who attended USM said Southern (and that's what I grew up saying).
I don't see what the big deal is. Hell its a JSU in Bama. So what, who cares if they say JSU instead of Jacksonville state university. That's some shit I expect the college kids to argue over. Kinda like the real "HU" between Howard & Hampton's undergrads. Not grown adult men. Winston-Salem State is SU. Y'all mad at them for that? Lol

As far as the game, May the Real Southern Win :D

In Alabama, Jacksonville State is not referred to as JSU; it is called Jax State.

I thought older folk called Southern Miss "Southern" because it used to be Mississippi Southern College from 1940-1962.

Honestly, I don't know what older white people called it but I only heard black people call it Southern Miss but mostly, USM. Recently, young blacks have been saying Southern. You won't find many older black saying Southern in reference to USM.

I recall reading some HBCU sports magazine years ago and the article was in reference to former Southern quarterback Marcus Jacoby. The article discussed Jacoby's first arrival on SU's campus and how when Marcus first spoke with a few of SU's students they asked him was he sure that he was not referring to Southern Miss?

It depends on what part of the state you're in, age & race...... You'll hear all three USM, Southern Miss or Southern & yes there are plenty of black folk (mostly those who grew up with & attended school with clear people) who say "Southern" regarding USM

I've always referred to them as "Southern Miss", but I'm a guy who could name all the schools in the SWAC by the time I was 8 years old. We often times forget that we are in a microcosm- there are a LOT of Black people (and of course Whites) that don't follow Black College Football and know even less about HBCU's. To this day, I still have to explain to Black folks in their 30's what "HBCU" stands for. They just don't know. Can't be mad at them- well, actually I do get annoyed, but that's another story.
