No Spring Practice for Southern Football

Ivy was a sophomore on the field as you say but we had a TRUE sophomore on the field with no SPRING PRACTICE since he stepped on SU campus and he still out-shined Ivy that game as a matter of fact that season, so how is that not irrelevant? and he took the 2nd half off lol

Ivy has had I know at least 3 spring drills lol..

Incorrect

No. What does that have to do with this being the 2nd year in a row for Southern? All I did was report a story and say Odums gambled. Can't blame him though. This wouldn't be an issue if Odums didn't bring this up as an excuse multiple times late in the season last year.
My point is PV showed that a team can excel even without a spring practice. Odums used it as a crutch.....But after September, no one listened.

Yes it matters. But I see where you are with it.

Well just to humor you. What he said about Ivy is incorrect. What he said about Howard taking the 2nd half off is incorrect (24-36 heading into the 4th and he played deep into the 4th). As far as outshined Ivy that game the qb that win will get the nod. Any eye test is debatable. Tillery and the wideouts did the work. Those receivings yard were mostly 5-10 yard passes they took to the house. As far as the season goes Ivy got hurt game 5 (so no comparison there) and stats wise led all qbs until they removed his name 3 weeks later. Howard played good within an offensive system that had a clue. Again its all irrelevant with new coaches and new players.

@NastyD I don't discount the importance of spring drills. I think they are vital in team prep, especially when you are installing a new defense.

There are things a team can do to mitigate the loss like 7 on 7 drills and what not. The offense comes back virtually intact, but I'm concerned about how Berry will call the offense. However since teams are vanilla in spring, that concern won't get answered until 2 or 3 games in.

Defensively we should be more experienced on the back end. We will move to a 43, so figuring out what that front 7 gonna do won't get answered until 2 or 3 games in.

At least no one will be hurt going into fall. But no spring practice bothers me some.

I agree with you about the spring. I was stating that this whole 50-31 thing is irrelevant with new coaches and players. It definitely doesn't hurt to have spring practice. Berry did wonders with your offensive line and running game so offensively yall will maintain there.

I believe that not having a spring hurts teams that are breaking in new coaching staffs or losing a lot of starters. A good coaching staff will probably struggle the first 3 games and will finish the year off good. A lot of people are not realizing that Simmons had a leg up at Prairie View with no spring being that he and his DC already been in that situation before at Alcorn. Alcorn had a spring but with Melvin Spears leftover Staff. Hopson wasn't hired until May and Simmons/McNair was his first hires. Simmons is a better hire than most folks give credit for. Alcorn was able to get him on the cheap because he got in the same situation Mike Haywood got into at Pittsburg and Henry Frazier got into at NCCU. Simmons was the OC at Middle Tennessee St.

Speaking on Chad, I think he'll help Ivy tremendously. Look at what he did with our QBs. Question is will be how quickly can the offense mold into a more balanced one.

But back to the spring: The onus will be on the veterans coming back on defense. They gotta learn a 43 defense. We have some good players returning like Tiller and D. Johnson, but without spring practice those veterans gotta put in the work to make that transition smoothly or risk catching some of that pine on the sideline and looking at the band, ya dig.

Offense will obviously be the strength of the team. We don't know if Berry will like to push the ball downfield vertically or will he like to establish Tillery first and then take shots downfield. Also, how will Berry use Willie Quinn in the offense. Will they move Willie around?

I thought Darren Sproles was done snicker

Yall stay picking from SU tree smh, whether it be sports, bands, staff, etc, Lol

 Same lies every year.

Obviously those people want something better than what SU is offering. I mean, you do have to want & apply for a job to get it, right?

Not our fault your people see the better side of life lol.

No matter what...Them Jags will be in the mix for the championship.........Don't know how but they are always in the mix....
