No Spring Practice for Southern Football

PV_Sigma7

Think twice, speak once
Odums took a gamble and failed. This will mark the 2nd consecutive year that Southern will not have a Spring practice. He gave the "No Spring practice" excuse on many occasions last season.

Southern coach Dawson Odums is making progress in remaking his staff, but the new group won’t be able to conduct spring practice.

For the second consecutive year the Jaguars will not have spring practice to fulfill lingering NCAA sanctions from 2012 related to insufficient Academic Progress Rates.

Odums said Wednesday that Southern chose the forfeiture of spring practice rather than accept a postseason ban for last season.

That is HUGE...especially when you hire a new Coordinator. Now he will more than likely (even though there are ways to engrain the basics), have to wait until Fall Practice to establish his terminology, set formations, evaluation of talent, etc.

A few comments before the thread gets out of hand.....
1) He knew all along SU wasn't having any spring practice this year, so this should be no surprise.
2) Even with no spring practice, SU's downfall(s) came in October.....4 games into the season. The 1st conference loss was in October on homecoming. And even though, the defense played poorly (in the 3 conference losses), the turnovers committed on offense in each game weighed heavily on the outcomes.
3) And if no 1 practices this spring, then this shows the mentality of the kids of today. Unless someone can correct (educate) me on this, I don't see why the students can't go and workout on their own!!! Is it a violation if the (soon to be starting 3rd year) qb and wr's go out and work on route running and timing. Can these guys not get on the track and run on their own?

4) And last, for PVSig7, did PV have a spring practice last year with their new coach?

They can go out there on their own with unsupervised practices. As a matter of fact, it will be highly recommended by the coaching staff that they do.

Right......kinda like voluntarily mandatory...lol. No spring practice aint the end of the world. Once the Fall comes, it will be an afterthought..............unless someone tries to use it as an excuse.

In reality, no spring practice means no freak ACL tears and other injuries in the spring. Your team actually stands a chance at being healthier when fall camp starts. Mental reps and 7-on-7 drills can only do so much, but no one will get hurt. The coaches can "instruct" their LBs and DBs on coverages while the QBs/RBs/WRs/TEs work on routes.

Also, it puts an impetus on veterans to have their sh*t together once newcomers/true freshmen come on campus. Spots could get taken.

It sucks, but it's not the end of the world. When pads get put on, you gotta be ready like everybody else.

No. What does that have to do with this being the 2nd year in a row for Southern? All I did was report a story and say Odums gambled. Can't blame him though. This wouldn't be an issue if Odums didn't bring this up as an excuse multiple times late in the season last year.

Which was bs. No spring didn't effect SU after the first game, last season. you could tell vs Louisiana Tech, SU didn't have spring. Poor coaching is why SU lost to PV, Alcorn, and Gram. Talent was there.

Who cares

Just win

No disrespect to the other schools on the East side of the conference, (but about to make a disrespectful comment Lol) but they had spring ball and we put dayun near 50 (and dayum near 70 on the poster's school who (snickered) in here, on every single one of them except Alcorn

Again

Just win

Valley didn't. Our restrictions were lifted this past year. At least we get a Spring this year with a lot of returning sophmores and the few JC transfers that committed.

As someone said before, "voluntary" practices should be the norm.

Wait...Chad Germany is at JSU....so that means the New DC AND OC won't have a Spring Practice.

It's never a big deal....until Daddy Alcorn bends you over...again. Those walls are looser than Kim Kardashians.

Oh my bad

But JSU had though and how that helped them out against us who didn't have it and was starting a QB that was a Sophomore?

Ivy was a sophmore on the field so that's irrelevant. Actually the whole 50-31 is irrelevant this year being that we have your co OC with a completely new staff/players etc just like you guys. As stated earlier this is old news

Dude said we have your OC LOL, man good play, but what that mean LOL

How is it irrelevant when the last meeting was the 50-31, it becomes irrelevant when a new meeting is completed lol come on bruh

Yea yall got our co-OC but ok, he aint scoring no TDs lol, He didn't score one TD here at SU this year lol

Yall stay picking from SU tree smh, whether it be sports, bands, staff, etc, Lol

I still say with no spring practice this year, we still hang 50 on your goofies

Hell we had 42 at half or something

Ivy was a sophomore on the field as you say but we had a TRUE sophomore on the field with no SPRING PRACTICE since he stepped on SU campus and he still out-shined Ivy that game as a matter of fact that season, so how is that not irrelevant? and he took the 2nd half off lol

Ivy has had I know at least 3 spring drills lol..

Unless his coordinators change something, Comegy does not really use his spring. The kids go out there but they are not learning anything.

If you dont already get why it's irrelevant this season with coaching changes and player changes then clearly me saying it's irrelevant again will not make you comprehend.
