NEW ORLEANS —U.S. Attorney Kenneth Polite said former LSU and Southern University football player Nemessis Bates has been convicted of hiring hit men to kill a friend who had stolen from him.

Polite said federal jurors convicted the 36-year-old Kenner man Thursday of soliciting a crime of violence, use of interstate commerce to commit murder-for-hire, causing death by shooting and conspiracy to possess firearms.

Bates -- originally from Vicksburg, Mississippi -- is called "Nemo." He was accused of paying Walter "Urkel" Porter and Aaron "Beadie" Smith $20,000 to kill Christopher Smith in November 2010. Christopher Smith was shot at least 20 times.

District Judge Sarah Vance scheduled Bates' sentencing Sept. 9. He could get up to life in prison.

Aaron Smith has pleaded guilty and awaits sentencing. Porter awaits trial on charges accusing him of shooting Christopher Smith.

I remember one game on TVagainst UAPB....that fool ran a kickoff back for a TD and sorta sat on the edge of the goalposts afterward...posing...even though his team was getting kicked to sleep. This was the infamous "it feel good!" game if you're an old head on this board.

I want to say it was 98. That game in Little Rock where McKissick and the other running back killed us. But Nemo had the crackback of all crackbacks that night

Man.... self induced misguided youthism. Open door opportunity for success w/in the parameters of our society and he, they, voluntarily choose to go down the negative path w/ legal prosecution awaiting them. *sigh*

Dude almost got cut by a chick in the class we took. I was taking ed courses with a bunch of athletes. I overslept the 9 o'clock and then got to the 10. They were telling me that Nemo was messing with this girl, the girl told him to leave her alone. He didn't and the girl pulled out a blade and tried to cut him....

Then there was him at Springest shooting a Super Soaker water gun at Katie Red (no pun intended)!...

@number1, you're right...that game was in 2000. We lost 30-19. I was in Lil' Rock and the game wasn't even as close as the score indicated.

That's when I knew that some folk ain't used to winning. How in the hell you gone talk about someone cheating and your team's crushing the other team?

But Nemo crushed that Jett dude with a crackback block like in the 2nd quarter. That isht was brutal in person.

Yes, it was 2000 because '97 was the year we (UAPB) probated (came back to the SWAC); also, '97, '98, and '99 were the years we went into double & triple OT with Southern. We finally beat them in 2000.

The other running back from UAPB was Ron Johnson. We used to call them "Thunder & Lightning".
