How do we treat our former players and coaches

We all get some players back, but lets not play stupid folks. HBCU's have a clique crew. HBCU's do alienate folks at our schools. We have a uppity problem and if you aren't in the cliques they act like you ain't shyt. The reason our alumni don't give back is because we all have a communication problem at our schools that could get better. HBCU's gotta get better at treating all their alumni like they mean the world to the University. Not just a specific crew. We have a problem, and the best way to get past a problem is for HBCU's to acknowledge our short coming when it comes to alumni relations.

True,

TN State has a few that attend the games on a regular bases and I mean a few. The majority that attends the games played under Merritt, Coleman and Gilliam.

TN State has sent hundreds of players to the pros as have other HBCU’s and the sad part is they (parents) feel as if their college is not good enough for their children. And HBCU’s have employed many of Negros who could not get a job anywhere else, however prefer their children attend a PWC.

Now they will show up, if their names will be mentioned at Halftime. I see more commitment from the Fraternities and Sororities, than athletes or students that have made careers in the pros or have some of the “upper level” jobs.

I am looking at the Army All American Bowl, watching Phillips, commit to UTK, grinning like a Cheshire Cat, but your mama is the AD and you have enjoyed all the benefits TN State had to offer. Sadly, your father played at TN State.

I know TN State, have bent over backwards foe some of our alumni, and the will not acknowledge or give one red cent to the university.

However, they will give and give whenever the man come calling.

The university is not "always" the problem some of the former players and student need an attitude check.

A lot of coaches once fired, will not come back that's the name of the game. if a lot of players like that coach and felt that guy was done wrong they will show their support by staying away also.

Again, we have some guys who think they are entitled and will want everything for free instead of trying to round up a bunch of folks who can help support the program.

This is funny, some of the coaches should be thankful they were able to play and coach at a HBCU, because as sure as “dodo stink” they would have been no more than a practice dummy at a majority of the PWC and would never, never be a head coach at a PWC.

Yes, if it’s free I am thee count me in. I have witnessed, some TN ST Alum that own their own businesses, ask for free tickets.

damn..the AD's kid?

I laugh when you said how HBCUs have employed folks with good paying jobs when their own PWC alma maters won't even consider them....when their kid turns out to be a prospect you can't even get them to sniff that way but at the PWC level, it;s understood your employment is based on the kid going to school there.

but I also think it's like the parents don't take control and set the tone in terms of recruiting....yes, the kid may go to a PWC but wants wrong with talking up the alma mater to the media member that's covering you?

Like a coach once told me though....if the PWC's don't develop the 4-star athlete or the kid does not work out....the parents and kid will admit they did not work hard enough....they mess up at an HBCU, everyone is blamed from the cafeteria to the postman on campus :emlaugh:

At JSU we treat our old alumni very well. Give them jobs and everything. Ask Harold Jackson.

band fan,

No lie, he committed to UTK and mom’s just grinning and having a good time. Here is the kicker, there were other “Die Hard” TSU Alumni, in the background skinning and grinning. They are just looking for free tickets.

Its better that he is at UTK, several years ago, there was a player that played only because his father was a friend of the AD’s. He was a joke, but played as a favor to his father.

He is not the first one. In the past another employee of the university, son went to UTK and he enjoyed all the benefits. UTK gave his mom a job, when he was done, so was her job.

There are several pro players, father played at TN State and none of their sons played for TN State. In fact, there was one that told TN State that his son was too good to play at TN State.

Am I upset, absolutely no? This only tells the HBCU’s that they have to do a better job recruiting.

TN St, gave a job to Reese and Thomas. Thomas, realized that he could not coach and decided to go to TX So and mess up their program. Reese, was fired and decided to coach high school, that did not last long.

Thomas is now revered at TSU....he was not as bad as some thought but he remained too old-school at times on the football field but he was a solid AD as he had good ideas

Have there ever been any Robert Hammond or Steve Wofford sightings? LOL

Again, we have some guys who think they are entitled and will want everything for free instead of trying to round up a bunch of folks who can help support the program.

But then, you have a lot Of guys who now have kids in high school who happen to be good players and a lot of times those guys will be caught up trying to follow their kids and if they are an fbs recruit you will never see them for quite some time.

You start doing a bio check on these good football or basketball players, You will see that their parents were the stars of the SWAC in the 80s and 90s...... But a lot of times those parents will not come around for whatever reason as if to say they don't want the kids to be recruited by our schools so the best way to avoid it is not show up at all and say you're supporting your kid

Once the kids eligibility is over then normally they will come around and will drop a line that you did not recruit my kid when In reality if we helped you out you should at least help get us in the door

I follow Wofford on Facebook. He and group of former players from his era were talking about getting a SUite for the BC next year. Wofford lives in La, so you can't expect him to show often.

Be easy bruh

I was saying other than Eric Randle he is the only well known SU players that I hear about being at ALL THE GAMES..that's somewhat in my time..I'm not speaking on those players who played in the 70s and 80s..
I'm more so speaking on well known players that played in the 90s and 2000s the ones that were good made plays..outside of Randle..I don't see or hear too many that follow SU games..be physically at the games..every or most of the games..those players..
I'm not speaking about the 3rd TE who got 6 snaps in his time or the 3rd RB who played...I'm not calling them out...I'm speaking on those who broke records..scored more than 8 TD...rushed for more than 500 yards cats..

I see JV(James Vernon), G Money Landry( Every game before his brother played at LSU, but when his brother had a off week he was at SU game. Saw him at multiple games this season), Jamal George(saw him at homecoming and BC), Valdez(Saw him at every game), Alden Foster, Shawn Wallace, Matthew Dorsett(saw him at every home game) and multiple others. Have you ever went by the alumni tent, where they have the free food, that's where they hang out. Matter of fact, I think SUFAA had a tent sent up by the Nursing building.

Again that's the last game of the season lol..of course you expect them to go to that game and ball out

How about then show up to the 1st Home game of the season but again them grown ashy ass men and they can do whatever they want...this just backs up what I've been saying we/they only want to be seen when it's HC or JSU game or Bayou Classic time..
Again ppl do what they wanna do but you have to start somewhere and I say former players coaches trainers from our school can play a big role if they would just come to the game

B. Lee..SU qb. .I don't even know if I seen dude at SU game after he was done playing and all the coverage he got while playing..
Hell Pete don't even come..what is it that his old ass is doing on a Saturday night anyway...His ass stayed in Pic a deli eating free meals during the week when he was coaching and you mean to tell me he can't come..

What's so sad is I see more old band members at the SU games than the old former football players and I'm talking band members who last year was 2013 and they at most of the ganes...lol..and they are there supporting and acting a fool with the band...hell they rep the band every where they go and they don't even March any more Lol
I'm just saying we have to get our former players at these games and pumping up the conference...

Like a poster said..band fan..where is Wofford...Robert Hammond...etc..b lee..Lol ok

Dude just shut up. Do you realize B.Lee is a college coach. How tf is he going to be at SU game. I follow alot of current and former players on social media and B.Lee is always giving the current players props. After the BC, he damn near sent a message to every player saying how proud he was of them. B.Lee is as die hard of a Jag as they come. And the people I listed were all stars. Wofford lives in La. How can he come to all the games smh. I saw JV in Lafayette at the party downtown that Friday night lol.

That's some sad stuff Lol.

Like help me understand this anybody...

Why did he chose that school...I mean does he think it would better his chances to go pro?
Does he think that going there will get him a better job when he graduate?
Does he think that going tenn St is a bad thing?
Help me understand him choosing and help me understand why his parents allowed that to happen Lol..
I mean I'm sure he could have gotten a free ship at tenn st..what is the purpose of his decision to go there?
I'm asking to understand the logic...
Do they have better teachers..books..classrooms there??.
Help me with this Anyone

So a stadium that seats 30,000, that has two sides, that has several entrances, you think you can see everyone that comes to the game smh. I have never saw Hayes, but who knows if he has come to a game or not. Probably couldn't recognize him.

yes he did. He worked as a GA with Pete and is the OC or QB coach at Lincoln, where former SU LB coach Mike Johns(LB that played for the Rams) is the HC. I think Mark Freddrick up there also. Again how can a college coach come to another college game smh.

Shit are you sure about that cause I can't tell!...but I guess you would have rather have the mom/AD on TV acting a fool and embarrassing her son like April Collins Landon's mom did twice when both of her boys didn't chose LSU...I could go deeper on this subject about you (all) that always have a compliant about where a kid from a HBCU family should go play their ball but it's early in the new year and I am still on my best behavior!
