I Have to Disagree with Alcorn's Editor on the Steve McNair Article.

The article I am referencing is the one on the Alcorn Sports website.

Yes, Steve was one of the greatest INDIVIDUAL players in College Football History. But to say it was the greatest Four years in Alcorn State Football History is TOO FAR Reaching. How many SWAC Championships did McNair Alcorn teams win? Marino Casem Won CHAMPIONSHIPS with great TEAMS. Leave Steve in his place in history but know to win Championships it takes TEAM Effort.

The current Alcorn players we have should not have live up to the level of Steve McNair. Those guys we have today play as a TEAM. TEAM effort is what wins Championships.

If you notice, Johnny Manziel never won an SEC Championship. AJ McCarron, while not an electrifying player, won Championships.

Leave Steve McNair in his place in history. We are in 2014 and have a TEAM that can possibly do great things.
 
Remember, McNair Teams only won ONE outright Championship and that was a 7-4 team in 1992 to my memory.

The Co-Champion year I don't count.

In 2014, there are no Co-Champions in the SWAC.
 



I think Alcorn needs to erect statues of Air McNair and Marino Casem. Until they are able to do that, they should call the entire football area Casem's Corner and the football field Air McNair field. Whenever there is a football broadcast, the announcer should say, "Welcome once again to Jack Spinks Stadium in Casem's Corner. Today the Braves will Battle the ___________ on Air McNair Field."

spoken like someone who didn't see steve mcnair play a single college game.. (not to be insulting, but that's has to be true.)

yes, when I was in college, my freshman year, fat sam was the qb, and mcnair came on the yard and started the next season. he only won 1 outright championship. while your at it why don't you say that he lost a playoff game by like 50 points! the question becomes was it his fault? and the answer anyone who saw him and alcorn play has to be no.

alcorn had mediocre to terrible coaching. I will give coach jones and his staff credit for running a system that allowed steve to do what he did, and for recruiting some talent (torrence small (wr, saints), john theiry (DE, bears), and the other wideout that won a superbowl with denver). but the offensive line was absolutely terrible. though harry brown was and probably still is a great guy, he couldn't do anything in the run game (probably b/c of that line) and the defense regularly put mcnair in the position of having to score 45 or more points to win. they gave up what 70 or 80 points in a playoff game, a game in which mcnair threw for more than 500 yards with a pulled hamstring.

so why was that the golden age of alcorn football? well there hasn't always been a espn college game day, but I met the guys that did their college football stuff in the athletic offices at alcorn during that final season. alcorn had a ton of games on tv/espn that year b/f a espn contract and multiple features on abc college football. he's the only alcorn player to be invited the Heisman. He took alcorn to a place in sports it had never been, and has not been since (keep in mind that would include dave whitney and his basketball teams that advanced in the ncaa tourney... yeah, what steve did was better than that.)

many of the kids who come to alcorn may in fact reference mac as part of why they decided to come down to alcorn in the first place, and are trying to live up to that legacy.

dwight fisher is a former coach, #2 in wins. spinks the first nfl draftee from alcorn. I agree, a statue would be awesome.

I would always change the channel to CNN at 10 minutes to the hour almost every Sautrday Steve McNair's senior year. CNN was actually following McNair around to tell their audience what he did that particular Saturday. It was painful to watch McNair laboring with the hamstring issue in the playoffs. McNair was one of those once in a lifetime athletes to watch. I remember before the NFL season started, you had veteran players video taping McNair's workouts and watching in awe. McNair was "LARGE."

...but the kids we have on campus NOW SHOULD NOT have to live in MCNair's Shadow. ONE OUTRIGHT championship from 1991-1994. That's it. No Dynasty, No Nothing. Football is a team sport. Look at what Doug Williams did his first stint at Grambling. THREE Championships. That is a dynasty. Hopson is building a TEAM in the position to be a DYNASTY. TEAM, TEAM, TEAM. You do realize that if John Gibbs wins one Championship, he will already equalize McNair. Leave Steve in History Alcornites. We have a team that in my opinion, is already in better shape than those McNair teams from 1991-1994.

You guys went 16-2 against SWAC competition when McNair started at QB(might be a better record, but I think ASU was in the SIAC at the time and I'm not sure if he started in 1991)

You're being too hard on McNair by dismissing what he did for Alcorn State. I remember being a kid wanting to play QB, and looking up to QB's like Steve McNair, Charlie Ward, and Tommy Frazier. McNair had me watching Alcorn State football as a kid.

And to be completely honest, before Hopson got to Alcorn, Braves football wasn't much of anything after McNair left. You guys had six consecutive losing seasons after the McNair era. Looks like he did more than you're willing to give him credit for

Don't get me wrong.. I appreciate what he did BUT.....we have leave him in his place in history. It is 2014. You rarely hear Grambling talk about Doug's three Championships. It's all consistency. Grambling moved on from Doug to Spears to Broadway. Even Broadway lost in the SCG his first year, GSU alumni let him know that is not acceptable.

The players we have on campus need to focus on what THEY can accomplish NOW and not rely on past history. They already have a 9-3 Season. They need to win two straight Championships. We still have a VERY young team.

I can almost assure you the 2013 SU Championship Football team really was not thinking about the 2003 Team.

History is good but to a certain point. I rather have Championships than records. Without a past, there cannot be a future but the past should not DICTATE your future. Alcorn can no longer rely on the McNair years. We have to win a Championship NOW in 2014 and another one 2015. The window of opportunity is open but closing.

This is the perfect example, of why some of our schools are dying a slow death. We have some young educated uneducated alum, who claim to love and honor their history, but in the same breath belittle and dismiss the accomplishments that were made, while denying that''s what they're doing.

On the one hand you have one spewing the same old tired daily ignorance, and on the other, one vomiting the same repetitive stench that they heard from white folks.

No matter how many times that they've been proven that they're wrong, (with facts) they relentlessly continue spreading their ignorance, under the delusion that they actually have something to contribute.

I'm sure there's a word to describe these types of people, (although I can't think of one) somebody far smarter than I maybe can help me with that,and in turn give me a better understanding of this type of psychosis.

Steve McNair accomplish what no other QB in Alcorn's history ever have, ( Maybe SWAC history as well ) he won two SWAC championships, took his teams to two division 1AA playoff appearances, and was a legitimate Heisman candidate that finish in third place, during his period at Alcorn.

In the process he not only put Alcorn on the map, but brought the SWAC brand to even higher recognition.

It's amazing that in the day of the information super hwy, how ignorance still flourish in our community.

Clearly there are several factors the attribute to this, three of which seems to be a constant.

1) Plain old fashion lazy and triflingness ( if that's a word )

2) Self hate ( regardless of how much they claim that it isn't so)

3) Absolutely no sense of real pride.

...and you know low key a winning Alcorn Football team means tougher recruiting for SU. Just tell it how it is. You want Alcorn to remain on McNair so we can't move forward. Reverse psychology does not work on me. Try again.

To be honest, you need more young alums like me who have a genuine passion about HBCU athletics...but you sit over there and continue to be an old fool behind a keyboard

I thought I was the only person who did that :lol: (I also do it to half of the Lynch Street people once they derail a thread)

Bluedog nailed it :tup: McNair finishing 3rd in the Heisman pretty much made the NCAAA come up with the Walter Payton award. Can't be having any scares like that happening again :lol: He was averaging video game stats that hadn't been seen since the Satellite Express that has only been remotely approached by Bruce so you know it might be a while before we see the old SWAC come back (40-50 points a game).

At some point, Alcorn has to give him a statue or possibly renaming the field or something (maybe something as simple as a historical marker)
