Could Grambling be replaced in Bayou Classic?

Heard. Typical. The Classic was skimpy on both sides, was there also.

Re: Grambling be replaced in Bayou Classic

Did you not read the hotels were 70-80% full.

If you say so. Then ask the Dome why they are floating this since all they have to do is raise the rent if it, alone, is the entity not making enough money off the game.

Regards.

Okay, I don't usually like to address attendance smack, especially with Grambling. But dude, come on now.... SU was the over-whelming Leader in attendance last year. SU's side was far from Skimpy.... Come on dude...

It wasn't the Dome, it was one person that works for the Dome. The Dome doesnt make money from folks staying in NO, only Money spent at their venue.

The increase in attendance was also good news for the city of New Orleans. The Convention & Visitors Bureau shows that hotel occupancy was at roughly 93 percent. They project that the event brought 200,000 fans into the Crescent City.

I'm aware of that, which is why I included the city in my original post.

I'm glad to see the attendance was up. I hope that trend continues.

A conclusion that can be reached, then, is the one person who's floating this must want to increase Dome related revenue by using higher attendance to spur concession sales and parking instead of raising the rent, and spur revenue from anything else dome related that is attendance based. That's reasonable. But there is an economic benefit to the city with those items, also, given that the Dome hires personnel to support those things that, in turn, spend those wages in the city; and, as well, makes purchases from suppliers that spend the revenues paid to them by the Dome in the city, also. So, I don't believe that this was just floated by one person strictly acting solo. I would find it strange, in fact, if one person would float this, alone, without support from other potentially affected parties both from inside and outside of the Dome given the potential uproar it could cause.

Despite all of that, and take the city out of it and stipulate that they want and are supportive of the event if you wish - that's fine: it is Southern's and Grambling's decision. They, alone, decide who plays the game, and where it is played, for that matter. Nobody else has a say in that; it is their conference game.

Regards.

Re: Grambling be replaced in Bayou Classic

Y'all have to remember, it was TC's bright idea from the start to replace Grambling. Also, it was TC's and LaFleur's bright idea to move SU's home games with Jackson State to Jackson. Noticed how the attendance numbers in Jackson dropped right after that 1 year debacle. Some folks are too dumb to look at the complete picture to understand how to make improvements. These people should have no business handling delicate situations.

Re: Grambling be replaced in Bayou Classic

Another idea bandied about for the game would be moving it from the traditional spot on Thanksgiving weekend to the season's opening weekend.
Story

I wouldn't be surprised if getting Thanksgiving weekend open to stage another game or event is the real end-game they are angling for.

Regards.

Other than LSU vs Arkansas no other game would come close that weekend.

Re: Grambling be replaced in Bayou Classic

Still better than the others. The Bayou Classic was the 2nd highest attended HBCU game.

touché which is why the people promoting the event need to stop being lazy and revamp their strategy to put people in the seats. Its not hard getting people to come to NO for the BC, but putting people in the stands will take more effort from the promotors and people from both schools.....

Right now, yeah, you're right. I don't see LSU giving up its home game to play there. I can't say about Arkansas. But money talks, so who knows. I also saw the attendance of the New Orleans bowl, and as was stated, the BC numbers are better than that. Hence, some other motives must be at work, here.

I was thinking more along the lines of paying for a game between teams that might not be playing on that weekend, currently; or either some other type of non-football event, although I can't say what that might be. Some promoter might have floated something to them that sounds viable, who knows. But Broussard was clear in his response; the contract has three years left. I read that as until then, hands off.

Regards.

Re: Grambling be replaced in Bayou Classic

1. Kill the free concert during the game. 2. Push the start time back to 3:00 like it use to be, folks are still hungover for the early 1:00 pm start. Folks party in New Orleans until the sun comes up. 3. Gram folks need to buy more tickets. I heard SU sold 80 plus % of the Bayou Classic tickets last year.

Do you know who organized the concert during the game? I have yet to find somebody who can give me a direct answer and everybody I talk to thinks it’s a bad idea. Last time I was at the classic was 2012 and there were about 30,000 people out there watching it then. It was a struggle walking through them to get inside the building. Also, I agree with you on that start time. I wish it would be at 6:30 or 7.

NBC controls the time. If both teams want the time changed, NBC won't accommodate you.

Q 93.3 runs it.

I thought the same until I saw that the Bayou Classic itself has it on its list of official events. Q93 does everything in terms of gettin artists and promoting it but it is an official event. The BC sells vendor space at the concert (Fan Fest).

You might be on to something. As it currently stands, Texas A&M and LSU is playing every other year in College Station on Thanksgiving beginning in 2014. Traditionally LSU has played Arkansas on the Friday or Saturday on Thanksgiving weekend. However, Arkansas game has been moved from that weekend and that will be the weekend they play Texas A&M. They very well may be an angle to all of this.....I can't see LSU moving their home games that weekend to New Orleans though so that theory may be far fetched.......Knowing those people, they would probably like to see ULL in Grambling's spot. That is not going to happen though.....

That would be the biggest PR nightmare ever for them if that happened. Replace a game that had 47,000 in attendance between one school with 8000 students and the other school with 5000 students. That is still some crazy numbers when you compare that to other schools with twice the enrollments of us that are lucky to draw 1000 folks(Southeastern), let alone 47,000.

Yeah, both College Station and LSU have larger capacity stadiums, it makes no cent$ for either of them.
