Could Grambling be replaced in Bayou Classic?

Re: Grambling be replaced in Bayou Classic

Both schools have faced bad times, and now both are seeing a light at the end of the tunnel! It would be crazy to change course now. BTW only UL LSU or (possibly) Tulane will match SU in New Orleans, but Grambling will need to put more effort in selling tickets for the game. We can't simply expect people to buy ticket "because it's the classic", I live in Monroe and rarely do I hear the game being promoted up here! AND THE POGUE ERA ENDS IN 11 DAYS, so we will pressure the next president to force some special attention to the Classic.

Re: Grambling be replaced in Bayou Classic

Well, make sure Pogue doesn't make anymore public statements in the next eleven days because he makes y'all look bad.

When SU played Tulane in the SUper Dome 75% of the crowd was SU.

It's guaranteed to get at least 10k more from both fan base.

This whole topic is an insult to me...The Game is between Southern and Grambling (PERIOD)......there is no other opponent....If that Blue and Gold aint standing across from that "G" then it aint the Bayou Classic.....

I agree. It's a conference game between the two schools, marketed by them. And hopefully, the two schools have trademarked the name. If New Orleans doesn't want it, find another city; or take it back to the campuses, if necessary (although, that wouldn't be optimum).

Regards.

Broussard: No change in matchup for Bayou Classic

““I’m someone who has never considered anything other than Southern and Grambling playing the game as the season ender. But I would assume (the contracts lock in both schools for three more years).” William broussard, Southern Athletic Director

The Southern-Grambling matchup in the Bayou Classic appears safe for the foreseeable future.

Southern Athletic Director William Broussard said Thursday that no one from the Mercedes-Benz Superdome has approached him about changing the Jaguars’ opponent in the traditional season-ending game in the Dome.

Broussard also said he has not spoken with Grambling Athletic Director Aaron James or any other Tigers representatives about any fundamental changes to the 40-year-old Bayou Classic. He called a report by WWL-TV that operators of the Superdome have discussed the possibility of replacing Grambling in the event “irresponsible.”

Agreed!

Re: Grambling be replaced in Bayou Classic

I don't know all of the details, but I guess this is what happens when the folks at GSU and SU decided part ways with the Bickerstaff Group (a black owned company) that previously managed and organized the Bayou Classic, for the local (white owned) New Orleans Convention Company Inc (NOCCI) to run the BC instead.

Decided to check out NOCCI and noticed their team has 2 Gramblingites (One of them is the Marketing Coordinator), a Xavier alum and a Baton Rouge native (AA) who was hired to manage the Bayou Classic sponsorships.

Operative word is "IF."

The "city" is substitutionary for the city and the Superdome. If it helps to clarify it for you, then if the Superdome doesn't want it, move it to another venue.

The point is the game is a conference game that the two teams control, along with (I hope) the name that they coined. If, as implied, the Superdome - or the city powers, because I find it hard to believe the Superdome would pursue this on their own - is suggesting a change in opponent, they don't have the right. They are just a venue. So back to my original statement, if they don't want the game (as is), move it.

Regards.

Thank you for clarifying lol

The city and the Superdome both want the Bayou Classic and Grambling. They just want the game to be more "successful" - meaning more profitable. They just want more Grambling fans at the game. This is not hard, people.

GSU ppl need to show up...bottom line...

on a side-note..We need to make this game "global" again..meaning making it more than just a football game...I can remember when I was in undergrad and in H.S. I would meet women from all across the U.S. at this event...(I wonder where and what that chick I met from Cali is doing lawd..smh) anywayz..but yea if they can make and get this game back "global" that would be big...

Re: Grambling be replaced in Bayou Classic

It's the economic benefit to the city that's at play here. Someone, I'd bet, has looked at recent attendance and questioned if the city is getting the economic benefit from the game. Given that some folks drive in to the game and leave immediately after it, that's a fair question to ask given recent attendance. Like I said, I doubt if the Superdome is floating this trial balloon on their own.

But the game, itself, is not controlled by the city or the Dome. While both entities have every right to ensure that the benefit to city is what it needs to be to make it sustainable for it, neither the Dome or the city has the right to say who plays in it. So spin it this way, if the game is not making enough money for the city, they should say so. The schools would then make a decision on what they need to do.

Someone mentioned earlier that it's no coincidence that this story came out concurrently with tickets sales beginning for the game; I agree.

Regards.

Re: Grambling be replaced in Bayou Classic

I don’t think its right for somebody outside of Grambling or Southern telling Grambling fans to buy more ticket or we are going to kick you out. I want Grambling fans to buy more ticket because they want to, not because some white man ORDERED them to. To me, that’s flirting with racism. Yes I said Racism because somebody already posted the number for Bayou Classic attendance, here are the numbers for the New Orleans Bowl.

2001 27,004 Colorado State vs. North Texas

2002 19,024 North Texas vs. Cincinnati

2003 25,184 Memphis vs. North Texas

2004 27,253 Southern Miss vs. North Texas

2005 18,338 Southern Miss vs. Arkansas State

2006 26,423 Rice vs. Troy

2007 25,146 Florida Atlantic vs. Memphis

2008 30,197 Troy vs. Southern Miss

2009 30,228 Middle Tennessee vs. Southern Miss

2010 29,159 Ohio vs. Troy

2011 42,841 Louisiana–Lafayette vs. San Diego State

2012 48,828 Louisiana–Lafayette vs. East Carolina

2013 54,728 Louisiana–Lafayette vs. Tulane

The numbers show me this game needed ULL and Tulane to play in it just to catch-up to Bayou Classic down numbers. Where is the ”they should move this game to another venue” talk. Because anytime the Bayou Classic has less than 60,000 people, that’s all I hear.

Re: Grambling be replaced in Bayou Classic

The BC for years had National appeal. Folks from across America attended the game. Personnel changes not only at GSU and SU, but we all are impacted by decisions that led to luke warm support. As our fan base gets older, we tend to stay home rather than travel long distances to attend games. Many loyal fans who were faithful are deceased or too old to travel. We need some stability in all of our programs. How do get fans to attend the game is the major issue.

Did you not read the hotels were 70-80% full.

Re: Grambling be replaced in Bayou Classic

1. Kill the free concert during the game. 2. Push the start time back to 3:00 like it use to be, folks are still hungover for the early 1:00 pm start. Folks party in New Orleans until the sun comes up. 3. Gram folks need to buy more tickets. I heard SU sold 80 plus % of the Bayou Classic tickets last year.
