Fort Valley State is an interesting choice. What is their fanbase like. Them or Morehouse seem like appealing choices.
 
those schools only appeal to the region....

like the NBA, the Western half of the league is where the growth patterns are at...

its better for us to stand pat at the end of the day than adding more D2 schools....

If TNST isn't coming, I would consider Langston. However, I tend to believe that SWAC should stay pat right now. At some point, the conference may need to strongly consider PWC FCS programs if they want to expand. NWST, SELA, Delta State & Nicholls may be logical candidates. I'd put NWST And Nicholls in the West and SELA and Delta State in the East. I don't see any FCS school in Alabama other than Jacksonville State that may facilitate Bama State and & AAMU in terms of traveling expense. These 4 schools listed are better suited geographically for the SWAC.

The only problem I see with these 4 schools is fan base and whether they would hurt our fan base and attendance numbers when it comes down to championship games.........Really we have a niche market that they are not a part of.....

But they could capture the market with a annual Classic vs BamaState JSU OR AAMU in ATL, and create excitement with GSU and SU coming to town every 2 or 3 years on a 5-1-2 scheduling format

About as much as it matter that SU beat JSU 98-0 in 1929.

The conversation was about how they were doing in the OVC, it takes a special kind of thinking to link that with post OVC records.

I would consider Morehouse but not Fort Valley. Years ago, FVSU would have been an interesting choice but not now. The SWAC was going to take Morris Brown but their financial troubles started years before the ball finally droppend and the SWAC was hesitant to vote them in. The big boys expand for markets. I think the expanding into the ATL market would be great for the SWAC. Leave Tuskegee, Langston, etc.. where they are. The only problem with Morehouse is that they don't have women's sports to balance out the conference.

Now Langston would also give the SWAC ins to the Tulsa market (61); plus opening up some possibilities in playing in Kansas City (31) and those other listed markets from the earlier post.

You know you would not be able to say that JSU is not a force in the SWAC without a straight face. We have been #1 in the EAST 6 out of the last 7 years and the years after we won the SWAC in 1996, we were a definitely a force not only in the SWAC but also in 1-AA with a playoff appearances and all those years with Kent before **** arrived. **** gave us a HUGE black eye but aside from that time, JSU has a pretty much been a EAST and conference contender... PERIOD. On almost ANY given year, the EAST title has to come thru Jackson. ...and 4 out of the last 8 years, the SWAC title has had to come thru Jackson!

And the thing about it, in that same time frame that they were fighting to get that one we were SUcking and got three.

So in actuality when they were ruling the SWAC they actually were SUcking worst than us.
 
Fort Valley does have a nice size fan base despite not winning big lately. However, I think it is best for them to stay where they are now. If the school gets really in contact with their grads more often across the state, they could get more talent and win close to what they did during the ‘80s. (This gets into a lot of issues.) A lot of changes have to occur there for them to even consider moving up to D-I.

Yes, Leon Douglas got Tuskegee to the SIAC championship game in his second year and had them deep into the national tournament last season. Their football team almost won at perennial power North Alabama in the playoffs last season. (They showed that they belong.) Despite some of the crowds they attract for homecoming, Morehouse-Tuskegee Classic in Columbus, and in Birmingham, I think that they should stay. They student body is not large as someone stated. They will have to make a lot of changes to go to division one as someone stated.

BTW people, Fort Valley would NOT give the SWAC the Atlanta market per se. Fort Valley would be located in Macon's market, which is ranked No. 122 just ahead of Lafayette, La. Fort Valley is also on the edge of the Columbus, Ga. market, which is ranked No. 128, just ahead of Corpus Christi.

To add on to the markets of the SWAC..
Mississippi Valley is located in the Greenwood-Greenville market, ranked No. 187 in size
Alcorn State would be considered as part of the Jackson, MS market
