Delta Devils showcase skills at Green & White Game

Apr. 12, 2014 Football

ITTA BENA -- The White team, consisting of the Mississippi Valley State offense, came away with a 51-25 win Saturday over the during the Green squad (MVSU defense) at the Green and White scrimmage game at Rice-Totten.

One of the largest spring game crowds in school history flocked to campus to witness what the Delta Devils would like under new head coach Rick Comegy.

"I was very pleased with the crowd," said Comegy. "I want to thank the crowd for coming…..They came out and supported these guys and I'm happy about that."

Get it Valley! Y'all getting me hyped about football season, the stripeless Tigers got our good eye on you :read:

Nothing interesting about this at all. This happens in MOST Spring games with the Offense vs. Defense format. "You" people kill me... :smh:

We would have thought that the offense wouldn't score… the fact that in most cases the defense is ahead of the offense in the spring would make that very interesting.

Nothing interesting about it. It was a controlled scrimmage because of obvious lack of depth. Some scrimmages are scored completely different from regular games. The defense is the least of my worries. Outside of obvious depth, our biggest need is offensive line, and CONSISTENT quarterback play. Our defense will be ok because we have some all conference talent returning, including one of the best, if not the best defensive player in the SWAC who led the conference in interceptions last year in Avery Boykin. I will tell you this, there will be a lot of freshmen playing this year for us.

IT'S JUST A SPRING GAME!!!! ALL OF THIS WILL EVENTUALLY CHANGE FOR BETTER AFTER SPRING DRILLS.

Spring games don't matter. I can tell you ours sure didnt. Just a tool to get fan excited about the upcoming season.

Dont worry about that. Your OL will be Fine. One of the best in the Swac

Why is this? As someone already mentioned the scoring format is different in the type of Spring game MVSU held... What I do find interesting is the fact that someone couldn't find anything bad to say about a "Spring game" so they pointed out that the defense lost... :smh: :emlaugh:

Yea… .so how is the spring coming along for pv? Did your defense win or lose? Nobody is trying to find anything bad to say, BB just wanted to know how hayes' scheme would do in the delta. Just checking on our former staff, ya know?

You might have all conference talent on defense but you also have DARRIN HAYES! Watch your defense suk!

It was smart for Comegy just to run a offense vs defense game because of the slim numbers on his roster. I was told that he had plenty of kids getting hurt from day 1. I don't think Valley fans should be too concern about the offensive line because they have a nice number of lineman coming in this summer. Valley also has some speed to work with on defense. I am really looking forward to seeing what this team will look like once Comegy's recruits get in their program.

My South Alabama associate still can't believe that Comegy was able to land Javon O'Neil. They were recruiting him pretty hard. That pick up was a shocker to those who really know about high profile recruits. For people like me who questioned if Comegy could recruit solid players to a place like Itta Bena, he sure made a big statement with that grab.

There are about 10 kids coming to Valley, 1 JUCO star lineman, who should be able to help Comegy change the face of the program at Valley. As I have said in other threads, these kids come from winning programs only. The mentality will be to win games, but the major test will be what this coaching staff can do there.

Although we all know that Comegy won't stop recruiting until the last day to register for class, you have to be impressed about what he has done since signing day. Although many of these HBCU recruiting rankings are a complete joke, I would have liked to see where Valley would fare in their polls now that they have 17 or 18 guys committed instead of the 5 to 6 on signing day.

If you are referring to the kid that I saw on film from out west, you are correct. He is a beast and should step off the plane starting on our offensive line. He played till the whistle blew, had a nasty streak, and was not just blocking cats but DOMINATING them on the line. He will definitely raise the intensity and physicality of the line this fall.

How does the squad look? Did he cut a lot of people this time around? I know Valley lost 22 seniors 2 years ago but don't know what yall brought in last year.

There wasn't anybody to cut. We have some kids that went down with injuries early in camp, so they didn't play in the spring game. The defensive line looks to be the strength of the team so far this year. Remember the names Sean Fugate and Jeremiah Russell, they will be terrorizing quarterbacks come this fall. To me, it was a pleasant surprise seeing some production from our young running backs. They quietly have a chance to get alot of playing time this year. I was also pleasantly surprised by some of the receivers outside of Julian Stafford stepping up and making catches in the spring game. The question is can they take these positives, build on with the talent they have coming in and keep the positive momentum going.

P.S. There was a nice crowd out there also. I was happy to see us take more advantage of the spring game as a chance to promote the program and build momentum and fan excitement going into the summer and fall.

This is the APR era... he can't do what he did at JSU in 2006. Also, at Valley, he does not have to win big right now. He just needs to win .. (and beat JSU..)

The same people ruin threads. WOW lol.

We just have the ability to know what coach they have. Im sure when Spears went to Alcorn, you all knew more INSIDE things about him than the Braves did. We have had EIGHT years of Comegy in Jackson. We know what to expect from Comegy.
