Do you agree with JSU's choice for head football coach?

I agree with jsu choice for head coach for the following reasons:

1) Harold Jackson is a good guy and was an excellent receiver in the NFL and a credit to his race.
2) jsu did not practice age discrimination in their selection and the Defacto Dean isn't ready for a rocking chair.
3) jsu can't do any better than Comegy and I have been saying it since they let him go.
4) General Odums beat them into submission and brought back haunting memories and forced them into an irrational decision of letting their coach go and they had to hire somebody.
5) This hire let a few of the empty buckets of TSPN Mouthia know that the jsu adminstration don't care what they think no matter how they try to spin it.

Dooley wants to be a Head Coach. Can't blame him. Didn't know he applied for the JSU job. Dooley is good folks and can recruit. Him and JSU might have been a good fit.

When Jackson State fired Rick Comegy in December, it had three demands for the next coach. The person needed to be a local recruiter, a disciplinarian and a respected figure in the Jackson area.

Names such as Mississippi State assistant coach Tony Hughes and former JSU offensive coordinator John Shannon were candidates. Their resumes met the criteria of being tied into local recruiting, with Hughes serving as MSU’s recruiting coordinator. JSU took a chance when it hired Wayne Brent out of Callaway High School as its men’s basketball coach a year ago, so maybe it’d take a chance on Shannon. The former JSU offensive coordinator is now the head coach at Biloxi High School. Callaway’s Daryl Jones, also a former JSU assistant, was an option too. All three applied.

But Jackson State went a less-conventional route.

JSU hired Jackson on Monday. In some ways, he fits what the school was looking for: He appears to be a disciplinarian and understands the history of Jackson State football. Heck, he’s even part of it. Jackson also has plenty of coaching experience at the college and NFL levels to suggest he knows football.

But it’s the recruiting component that’s the biggest question for him. His two main college stops — Baylor and Kentucky — are rarely major players on Mississippi athletes. Beyond that, Jackson has been out of the college game since 2006. That’s a long time in college football.

So was he the right person? There’s definitely questions to suggest he’s not.

But the university believes he’s an improvement over Comegy, and they are betting heavy on that with his three-year, $260,000-a-year contract.

Home attendance this past season was the lowest in the Comegy era. The 2013 crowds averaged 13,829 fans, a decrease from the 2012 season when JSU averaged 14,462 at home. The on-field products were both respectable (JSU went to the Southwestern Athletic Conference championship game the last two seasons). However, when the Tigers won the SWAC title in 2007, JSU’s average home attendance was 16,117.

If winning doesn’t draw numbers, then what will? Maybe a former great coaching the team?

Another factor that might have led to Comegy’s firing was his inability to take the program to the next level. The Tigers nearly went through last season undefeated in SWAC play, but losses to non-conference teams such as Tulane and Tennessee State, and even rival Alcorn State, hurt Comegy’s standing.

Is that fair for a coach who won 20 more games than he lost at Jackson State? Perhaps the better question is this: Can Jackson State do better?

Jackson’s track record as a head coach is far from proven.

His last college head coaching stint was at Benedict College (1995-96), where he compiled a 6-12 record. Before, he was an interim at Virginia Union University, taking over a program that had gone 1-7 and finished 1-9.
