Gameday attire: Does it really matter?

About a month ago, a buddy and I go to an Oklahoma football game. So, I meet him at his crib a couple of hours before the game and the first thing he says to me is, "Why are you dressed like that?"
(I was wearing a patterned button-down shirt, jeans and white and black Jordan's with red shoe laces). My friend was donned in OU everything. Red just everywhere.

Then he says, "You dress like those folks who go to HBCU football games." (His wife is a Tenn. State grad). I'm like, it's Saturday, and this is how dress on the weekend.

Then my man offers me a OU hat to wear. I politely decline. Before we enter the gate at the game in Norman, he again asks me do I want to wear this OU hat. I decline again because I'm not an OU fan, and the hat didn't match my shirt either.

So, my question is why does it matter what folks wear to the game?

I don't think what a person wears to a game is an indication of their level of fandom or love for their school or team.

To them, it matters! Seriously. My best friend always talks about a time when he went to a UT Longhorn game and he felt like he was the only guy in the stadium without Longhorn apparel on. Felt so bad that he went down and bought a shirt after the 1st quarter... :emlaugh:

HBCU crowds take dress to the extreme. Our crowds get dressed to go to the club afterwards. You look at a school like OU, the entire crowd is either dressed in school colors or in t-shirts and jeans that they don't care about. They come dressed to get rowdy and act a fool. HBCU crowds, minus the 5,000 hard core fans on any particular day, come dressed to show off and socialize.

Kendrick................ Tell me this?
How many women in OU's stadium did you see wearing 6" heels, dressed like they was going to a fashion show like you see at a HBCU game? How many guys did you see, dressed in designer gear that cost them a weeks pay?

My guess would be ZERO.

Those are real fans Kendrick. In the SWAC, we get ruined being around folks who think of football games as a fashion show or a chance to go enter a wobble contest at halftime.

I like to wear my S.U. stuff when going to a game. However, it doesn't bother or concern me how other people dress. If they want to dress up more power to them. When I was in college, I would always dress up when going to the Bayou Classic. These days it is nothing but sneakers and at the very lease an S.U. hat. BTW, I was a sports fans since elementary school so you can't measure everyone by the way they dress. Hell when I was in high school folks used to go a few of the big holiday basketball tourneys dressed up.

Either black jeans w/gold UAPB tee or blue jeans w/black or gold UAPB tee; always have on UAPB hat with ponytail sticking out and gold hoop earrings. I even have some black & gold beads & bracelet I got when I was in New Orleans!

Even when traveling to those overnight games (car or bus), I have on a UAPB tee; and when I take my girls to SU & PV, I rep UAPB.

Exactly.

It amazes me how people worry so much about what other folks have on at a game. Yeah...if the girl has on 6" heels and can't walk in them and falls...it's funny. It's okay to call her a dumbass for wearing the heels but not because she wore them to a game, b/c she can't walk in them.

I had a talk with a guy earlier this week and he was talking about folks that wear NFL football jerseys to NFL games. :retard: He couldn't understand why they would wear another man's jersey. But he likes to complain and worry about what other folks are doing so I just took it all in stride.

Wear whatever you want and makes you comfortable. Everybody can't afford to go out and buy school gear.

JSU games now a days you see more JSU shirts and jeans or a hat...but to me it doesnt matter as long as there are butts in the seats...

I saw about handful of people who were dressed sorta like me. As far a chicks go, I saw more flip flops and sneakers than heels.

What he said.

And if you really wanna see a fashion show, check out an Ole Miss home game. Their students do it up better(worse) than any HBCU.

I wear jeans and an A&M tshirt, depending on weather I wear a band hoodie or jacket but nothing but A&M stuff at the games. It is to the point on game days I won't even wear fraternity stuff, only A&M stuff

I thought our people only dressed like that for "Classic" games and not the regular afternoon football games. Although I know they dress up for them basketball games since the party is usually right after the game ends.

I'm usually in jeans and tennis shoes at games and since I'm taking pics on the sidelines I try not to wear a PV shirt or hat. I like going on both sides of the field to get shots. You'll see me in a TSPN Hat though.....

Man it's funny you bring this up...

I actually saw a dude with a LSU shirt on and cap on at SU H.C. game (no lie) granted he has every right to wear what he want...but honestly if I was close enough I may have said a word or two to dude...lol...no may in it..I would have lol but to answer your question, I think this what puts our school behind the 8ball

See we don't see it as a big deal with dude dressing up in his all OU gear as you said, but the admins of OU see it as 'branding their brand/univesity', you have everybody in the stadium with your school gear on, you're marketing your school to a point where you have little kids that are attending these games will see this and start to think, sleep and eat up everything about, seeing this, thus making them know nothing else but OU football.....It's marketing plan in a sense and it sales the school more so to the average cat (middle schooler or H.S.)

I mean you go to a game as a high school from outta state or in state and you see everybody painted with OU colors on...see OU this and OU that..that's a family astomphere and you are going to wanna come there as to suppose you see motherfuggers with different type of clothing on at a HBCU, not representing the school and they are at a football game.. you will be like dayum where's the school spirit, then you have folks that leave after halftime..lol you will be like 'oh they just came to be seen' and this what happens at our HBCU schools...our core fan base which are the ppl around 18-30 crowd at times are there just to be seen...different from your OU and UF and LSU fans..they are there to party while watching the game..until it's 0:00 left on that clock...big difference...

When you have folks in OU gear LSU gear, you can sale that stuff and make money if not, brand your school more so without pumping in alot of money into branding your product, you have the ppl do it for you...that's why I say, HBCU schools are sooooo behind the ball it's sad..it's a game behind the game that HBCU admins don't understand....and they will never get it...first becuz they don't study the little detail of things...wearing a OU shirt at the mall or anywhere will get a person to 'think' about OU football...going to a game will elevate that person interest...LSU , much as I hate them, they brand the hell outta their school, their gear is tight, shirts, caps, hoodies, little girl's cheerleading outfits etc..all the way down to the socks..and gloves....paint....I mean it's tight, can't lie, and it's some every day stuff you can wear, and you still can look nice in it...so they and other schools have taken advantage of folks just wearing the plain ole t-shirt with their school logo/imprint on it to the games..they see ppl in the stadiums at these games wearing this, so they're like ok..let's put some sense in this and make our brand more presentable, more urban per say...and I don't knock it..and that's why I see alot of cats rocking LSU hoodies and gear..it's tight to me...and by them wearing it everyday, it aint nothing for them to throw it on..on gameday...thus dude rocking that OU shirt..he prolly wear one everyday, when working out, going running..cutting grass etc....lol..it's a bigger picture and ball game that HBCU admins don't understand and see...

It matters to me as well. I am wearing my game day attire now.

it's about building school pride, I remember a woman wore a SU shirt to Grambling Homecoming and the everybody that saw that blue and gold damn near went crazy and starting booing and hissing at her, and one of our many ADs Lin Dawson actually proposed that students not enter the game without a Grambling shirt on. tho we all have the right to wear whatever we want, there should be something in you that makes you wanna rep your school colors, I wear a Grambling something everyday, a tie, some socks something, Win lose or No Contest

It's about having school spirit and pride, and creating a homefield advantage and atmosphere, but many folks don't get it and treat the game as more of a social outing.

Funny part about the JSU games is for the "regular games", it is about a 70%-30% Fashion show vs T-shirts and jeans. But when Alcorn and JSU game come up, that ratio is flipped............it's about 70%-30% T-Shirts and jeans vs Fashion show.

People come dressed for battle when the "Soul Bowl" come around. All you will see is BLUE and WHITE / PURPLE and GOLD with a lot of cherry red eyes from all the beverages being passed around.

It's been my observation - going to many pro and colleges games as a fan and reporter - folks attend to have various experiences. Some go strictly for the game. Others are there to cause a ruckus. Some are there just to hangout with friends or family.

Others want to enjoy the band, the food, beer, hit on chicks or hit up all the amentities (such as what is found in these newer or renovated stadiums). Shoot, student attendance all over the country has slipped due in part because there is a lack of wifi service.

As long as folks paying to get it, that is a win in itself.
