Best and Worst HBCU Uniforms

Well lets see its only a few schools in here with staple logos Grambling G, SU logo and the Block JSU every one else in limbo with their brand so thats a mute point. IMO

Rob the schools you mention has million dollar facilities and National Titles (Not a Mythical Black Championship) so no they dont need to change unis when they have everything else up to date and beyond to attract kids...Our schools problem is we ONLY PLAY FOR THE SWAC TITLE point blank, every year we are ranked in the lower tier of FCS football, OOC across the conference sucks and most of our schools only recruit 1 and 2 star kids we may get lucky bring in a 3 star kid...So in order to attract the type of talent we all want, Uniforms and Facilities are needed...

Ask PV why they are wearing CAMO unis and how the players feel about it or look at Alabama State recruiting after they got their new stadium...Ask Queen Myers why she wants a dome stadium its not to stay in the SWAC she said that in the winter alumni meeting in 2011.

GA Southern North Dakota St and Appalachian state havent change unis at all in the FCS ranks but they also win on the field and have major upgrades as far as facilities.....why else do you see all these schools changing uniforms and having a million uniform combos. (Because kids like that stuff PRIME EXAMPLE OREGON)

SWAC will be behind for another long minute with u guys type of thinking. A change is needed to catch up with the rest of the football world and just saying "O we need to win on the field without the right changes wont cut it"...this isnt the 80's....

Ummmm Appalachian State consistently changes their uniform..... Truth be told its only a handful of FBS teams that don't change their uniforms..... Same thing goes for FCS teams.....

Ok so thats another team that changes unis.. lol

Our programs need to consistently brand our teams....I saw somewhere Montana has 5 sets of unis this yr..

There ain't nothing stopping of the schools I listed from changing unis yearly. I recall Alabama changing the collar and it didn't go over well. OU tried it a few years after Switzer left, but they went back. An occasional change for specific purpose is cool. ND does it. But changing every single year just because you can serves no purpose to me. We act like grade schoolers wanting new clothes to impress our classmates. And something is seriously wrong is you feel that changing uni design every season is necessary to "catch up". Upgrading facilities and new unis do not go hand in hand. Bama States new stadium or JSU's proposed domes ain't got a thing to do with no unis. Consistency and longevity, in whatever capacity, establishes traditions.

I would love to see us bring back the red in our uniforms like we use to have with the red block JSU & with the red shoes even!!!!!

You can't effectively brand a team by uniform if that team wears 5 sets of unis a season. Logos are easier to brand because we don't change every year. Again, consistency and longevity.

Virginia Union's uniforms are awesome...classic and stra9ght to the point.

As far as the SWAC goes, Jackson State, UAPB, and Alabama State lead the way as far as uniforms go. I'm not of fan of Southern's new white helmets...personally I think they should go back to the yellow joints from the 90s.

Quick question for JSU and Grambling kats...is red an official color for either one of your schools? I noticed Grambling and JSU have worn red at one point.

I dont think anyone addressed your last question. According to Wiki:

GSU - Black and Gold
JSU - Navy Blue and White

Rob Im not saying SWAC schools need to get a new uniform every year. And the schools you listed do not need to go into the crazy uniform era because they have everything else in place to attract big time recruits. Like SuaveTiger stated there arent too many schools out right now who are adding news unis to their closet...Face it recruits like that stuff theres a reason Oregon decided to go that route in the mids 90s and a bunch of schools have followed their motto since. Simple question for you every year why are schools getting multiple sets of uniforms nowadays? like you said Notre Dame has even change it up add schools like Nebraska, Miss St, Ohio State and Florida St and alot more...I would like to see a SWAC program do that!

The Red Block logo for JSU should have never been change in the first place in 2002 thats was one of the worst ideas with JSU football but I kinda understand because its not the university official color...And the sad part is we had changed logos in 2002 and 2003 even went a few games without logos on the helmet...:smh:

If I were AD at JSU I would add the accent red color to the sports programs as a throwback uniform....JSU should have 3 uniforms and atleast 2 helmet combos IMO!

Oregon put money into its facilities first. They built that boss ass locker room, renovated the stadium and other changes to attract the student athletes first. Then after stepping their game up, they started with all the unis. But they had no traditions, except being losers, prior to. We, on the other hand, threw away with a consistent look to go the way of they new uni every few years. You just stated we never should have gotten rid of the red block. Suave Tiger said he wished we had kept red in the uni. That's what we grew up on. We never wondered what the team would look like. JSU football had one look. Even other posters speak on how they loved/hated to see that red block or uni on the other side. That's what they were used to. It was established. Now it's gone. I like the uni we wear now. Surprised it ain't been changed, because we're at least 4-5 years in with the pants. At any rate, if we get that dome, and the uni never changes, more recruits will look our way. Let's stop putting the cart before the horse.

Sometimes you pull the cart first because thats all you have. It's a lot easier(and cheaper) to change uniforms than invest in facilities.

These uni convos are the worst. Our schools should take pride in a particular uni and give kids something to look forward to play in. Alabama, LSU, OU, USC, Auburn, Texas, teams that usually compete for the national title, been wearing the same uni since forever. Effort put in them unis should be used on the field.

Rob,

I don't think that is what the gripe is about. I actually think changing uniforms is good. Some schools don't like change but let that be them. I think the gripe here is mainly about the quality and fit of the product.

BINGO

It would take another Nupe to understand.... Russell Brand Products are horrible in comparison to Nike and Adidas!

Ummm......no. This thread is about how unis look. The first gripe was mine, but it wasn't about the look of the unis. I simply said we need to stop changing unis so much and develop something that kids can look forward to playing in. Then we got into the nuances of that. My original post was a tangent that me and DMJ got on. I already know some unis are ugly and some aren't. Some are of cheap quality and some aren't.

Now, Nupe, please find any post where I even began to try to even bother to make an attempt to discuss the quality of the unis between Nike, Adidas, or Russell. I never misunderstood anything.

We need some more unis at JSU keep the block but a special uniform would be nice....

I like the gold helmets and the royal blue helmets....and I like the royal blue unis better than the Columbia blue.....but Columbia blue is the official school color

FINALLY, an honest jag.

Columbia Blue or the light Blue and Gold is the official color scheme at SU. So all that Royal Blue and other shades of blue was never our school colors. It don't have to be as light or powder blue we have made it be. But our colors are basically close to the UCLA or San Diego Chargers throwback Uniform colors and we have to embrace it.

Matter of fact, (which I'm sure all Southernites, and a few others know) we adapted the colors from Columbia University, Dr. F.G. Clark's alma mater.

Our colors was blue and orange...:uhoh:

Nothing wrong with blue and orange. Those are my HS colors. LOL.
